I am looking for information on John Dickson and his parents. I have John's marriage certificate that lists the following information. John was married to Julia Eliza Robins, his second wife, on 5/9/1877. His parents were David Dickson and Mary Ross and I cannot find much on them. John was born around 1826/1827. The certificate says John was born in New York City. I have his mother Mary's death certificate that indicates she was born around 1796 in Belfast, Ireland. She died 6/7/1889. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have found a family bible for a family named HARMON. It is in very bad condition but the writing in it is very legible. It contains Family Records for birth, death and marriages of HARMON, DICKSON, HYAMES, etc. There's also a piece of paper in the bible with lots of HARMON info. The Dicksons in it are: Charles Robert, Samuel Taylor, Robert & Idah Taylor, Robert & Polly, Daniel Morrice, Wm. B., Benjamin and James. Anyone related to these people please contact me for more information.

Descendants of Richard Hoge Dickson b. 1831 AL, d. 1931 TX

I am looking for descendants of my gggrandmother's brother, Richard Hoge Dickson. I know there must be a lot out there, since he had, at least, 12 children. Richard was born in Russellville, AL on 9/13/1831. His parents were Ann Margaret (Lucas) and Abishai Mercer Dickson. In late 1835, Abishai joined Shackelford's Alabama Red Rovers and came to Texas to fight in the TX Revolution. He was killed at Goliad on 3/27/1836. A few years later, his wife brought Richard and 2 of his sisters to TX to claim Abishai's bounty land. Richard spent most of his adult life in the Goose Creek (now Baytown), TX area. He married and had MANY children. He died just over a month shy of his 100th birthday, on 7/27/1931. Are there any of his descendants out there doing genealogical research? If so, contact me.

Lori

Looking for links of John W Dickson, Earl Dickson and William Bill Dickson

My line of Dickson's starts with John William Dickson (b. May 8 1846 d. March 3, 1914) married June 6,1867 to Mary Anne DeWitt (b. March 25, 1850 d. December13, 1932). Children of the union were Eva b.January 25, 1875 d. 1961; Earl b. April 16, 1883 d. unknown.
Spelling of name was changed from Dickson to DIXON after John was discharged from the Civil War army. In order to receive pension, had to keep Dixon for legal purposes but tombstone states DICKSON!

Would like to know John's family line since I do know Mary Anne's.

I do know that John lived in Indiana from the following item.
From http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilicgs/landprch/lndpra_d.htm
Detailed land Information
Purchaser: DICKSON JOHN W
Residence of Purchaser: INDIANA

DICKSON JOHN W NWNW 34 28N 13W 2 02/28/1871 IROQUOIS 40 ac @ 8.00/a = 320.00 purchased from RR

The 1880 cenus backs ups the purchase shown above. It shows that they were living in Martinton, Iroquois County, Illinois according to Family History Library Film 1254214 NA Film Number T9-0214 Page Number 238A

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
John W. She married Charles Edward Hissong February 24, 1912 One child born to them Walter Louis Hissong b. July 4, 1914 d. July 25, 1969 Walter married Edith Ida Marie Reichenbach January 12, 1947. Edith was born April 24, 1919, died August 31, 1993.

While doing some research I came across some newspaper blurbs. I can not verify them but does offer a strange "Twist" to something that CAN.

It was known that John Dixon/Dickson went to Beadle SD and tried his hand at homesteading. BUT There is a note concerning John Dickson leaving this area & though the newspaper reports states he was going to Kansas! Was that his original plans and then changed them going to the Dakotas where other relatives were?

Champaign County Herald
November 4 1885
Location: Urbana
Source: Champaign County Genealogical Quarterly Vol 22:2
"Mr. John Dickson has sold his farm of 240 acres, south west of Savoy to Mr. David of Phil for $7,000."

Note: Mr. David could have been Erza David who is the husband of Mary Ann Dickson (John's wife) 1/2 sister Angelina Farrington. He also could have been related to the David's. The land described is not familiar but he could have owned land there to along with the land in Iroquois County. Savoy is south of Champaign, IL.

Champaign County Herald
March 10 1886
Location: Urbana
Source: Champaign County Genealogical Society Quarterly
Page/Column: Volume 23 issue 4
Description: Golden Wedding of Mr.& Mrs.Wm.Park, various other articles
Under Champaign locals
"Mr. John Dickson and family started for their future home in Kansas."
In a later issue of the same paper
Champaign County Herald
April 28 1886
Location: Urbana, Illinois
Source: Champaign County (IL) Genealogical Society
Page/Column: Volume 24:4
the following was noted.
"Mahomet - Mr. John Dickson went to Kansas last week to see his sister, Mrs. John Dale, who is dangerously sick."

Have not been able to find a thing about a John Dale in Kansas. This would open the family up with maybe more info forthcoming.

An interesting item was also retrieved An obit in the Rushville Times

August 9 1888 Location: Rushville Description: Deaths of Cora Fey and Mary Hinton states the following:
Orbit for Mary Hinton
Died, in Neosho, Mo., on Sunday night, July 29, 1888, MRS. MARY A. HINTON, aged 62 years, 5 monts and 6 days, mother of CIRCUIT CLERK HINTON. MRS. HINTON came to Neosho in Feb., 1887 and had lived in her own home on South Jefferson street up to the time of her sudden death, which was caused by heart disease. She came from Rushville, Ill., where she was a member of the South Methodist church. She leaves three children- two sons and a daughter-and one sister, MRS. FARRINGTON, living in Nebraska. REV. J.D. WOOD conducted the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.- NEOSHO TIMES.

Mariah Taylor DeWitt FARRINGTON (mother of Mary Ann Dickson) DID have a sister named Mary of which no birth date is known. Could this be the same Mary Hinton? Is this the same Mrs. Farrington?? If anyone can shed some light concerning this saga, please let me know.

When it comes the Earl Dickson side of the family, the information is very sparce. My grandmother and Earl had a falling out way before I came along but the family ties had been cut. What information I do have came from the various search engines and have not been able to verify it.
Children show up on 1910 census Showing that Earl and Della were living in Otto Township, IL with their 3 children.
On the 1920 census, Earl shows up but with a new wife, Delphine. And then in 1930, another wife is shown Elizabeth. On the LSD census listing, it show a Carl Dixon Living in Otto twp. Per my knowledge, no person by that name was a relative. E could have been mistaken as a C.
Earl and Della had 4 children; Mary Grelia Dixon, John Dixon b. 1906, William Ira Dixon b. May 02, 1907, Frank b. 1909.
Earl and Delphine had 3 children; Nadine b. 1910, Irene b. 1915 and Octave b. 1913.

Do any of the above names connect to your family? If you do please contact me at elh754@prodigy.net . Will welcome all info anyone can provide. Have hit a brick wall so far!

Margaret (Meagher) Dickson: Parents and Siblings?

Margaret (Meagher) Dickson (15 Oct 1851 - ????) of Williamtown, Glengarry Co, Ontario, Canada was my maternal ggrandmother. Her husband was Daniel Alexander Dickson/Dixon (14 Mar 1849 - 1932). I have had no luck whatsoever in tracking any details on her Meagher family such as parents, siblings, photos, etc. I have a few letters that she wrote to her son, Clement Dickson who was my granfather. He had immigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts after World War I having served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Can anyone offer any information or direct me?? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Dave Robison
drr45@msn.com

Need help finding my missing Dickson/Dixon lines.

My Dickson (Dixon) line starts with John William Dickson born 5/8/1846 married Mary Ann Dewitt born 3/25/1880. John Williams parents are unknown. Mary Ann is the daughter of Banghardt Dewitt and Maria(h) Taylor. Mary Ann’s parents were married 1834 in Dearborn County, Indiana. Maria(h) then married William Farrington and had children with him. No information on Farrington is known. The Dickson name was changed after John was discharged from the Civil War army. The spelling was now Dixon and family tried to change back but couldn't due to army pension regulations of sorts.
John and Mary Dickson children were: William born 3/26/1869; Bertha born 8/20/1871; Eva born 1/25/1875; Earl born 4/5/1883.
Eva Dixon married Edward Hissong Feb 12,1912. Lived and owned property near Culver, Plymouth, Indiana. Returned to Illinois around 1915.
These Dickson/Dixon were residing in Indiana and Illinois area of Iroquois County according to census. At one point travel to South Dakota for a land acquisition but failed and returned to IL.
Have lost touch with Earl Dixon married Della Lambert and had 4 children: Mary Grelia; John; William Ira (Bill) born 1907; Frank. Only remember Bill who at one point lived in Kankakee County, IL near Manteno who had children. If anyone has any info concerning any of the above persons, please email at elh754@prodigy.net.
Dickson, William and Christina, 1850/1860 Allegheny Pa

How could 9 sons disappear? Sons 1850 Census, Allegheny 1st Ward; David, Martin, William, James, John, George, Lawson (?), Robert; all born 1825-1845. 1860 Census, Manchester Borough, Allegheny; sons David, John, Archie (?=Lawson), Robert and Holmes. In 1850 the father, William, was a fisherman born Ireland as he also was in 1860. Oddly their ages in 1850 and 1860 seem to be almost the same. In 1850 sons Martin and William were steamboatmen as was son John in 1860. Considering the Dickson/Dixon surname, and post-CW movement, surely someone must be tracking one of the nine sons. William the father was born Ireland and the mother Christina indicates Wash D.C. (1850) as her bp.

Dickson & Marshall in Allegheny County, PA

The unidentified, undated obituary of Robert Marshall gave the following Dickson information:
" The Dickson family was noted for its longevity, Mr. Marshall's mother having celebrated her one hundred and second birthday. His grandfather, Joseph Dickson, was prominent in the United Irishmen movement in 1798 and became a high officer in the army. Although the Dicksons were noted officers in the army, surgeons and physicians, Mr. Marshall turned his attention to contracting and mining...He [Robert] was a man of wide intellectuality."

The last will and testament of Mary Margaret Dickson Marshall of South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, PA is filed in Allegheny County, PA. In it she directs her expenses to be paid; all real and personal property to her son Robert Marshall of Penn Township, Allegheny County, PA; to the children of her deceased son Benjamin Marshall these sums: Frederick $50, Benjamin $50 and Margaret $25; and if her son Robert Marshall had not before his death sold the lot with a brick house in Noblestown, North Fayette Township, Allegheny County, PA which was purchased by her late husband from Mathew McGregor and wife, she leaves it to Archibald Joseph Marshall and Robert Yourd Marshall, sons of her son Robert; and leaves to Benjamin Hayes Marshall and Frederick Dickson Marshall, sons of Robert a lot with a frame dwelling in Noblestown purchased by her late husband from Mr. Hopper; but both houses directly to Robert Marshall if he has not sold them; named Robert Marshall and William J. Sterling executors. /s/ 28 July 1882.

James Dickson (b. 1791) m. Jane Scott (b. 1791) in 1811, in VA

I'm looking for any info on James Dickson, born in VA, married Jane Scott, presumably in VA,m in 1811. They moved to Indiana in 1818, eventually winding up in Washington IN. They had several children: Samuel, Katherine, William, Sarah Jane, John, Sarah Elizabeth, Rachel, Julia, and Mary.

I have lots of info about each of these children and many of their descendents, many of whom ended up in Illinois, but I can't figure out who James' parents were. The only POSSIBLE clue that I've foudn thus far is that a James Dickson filed a will in Rockbridge County VA in 1797, listing a "James Dickson" as one of his sons, so he could conceivably be the father my James. (The others listed in the will were Patrick, Samuel, Robert, and Agnes. No wife is listed.)

James sometimes shows up as "James Dixon" in the census.

Hi,

I am trying to find out more about these DICKSON or DIXON families who emigrated from Ireland to Renfrewshire, Scotland and then settled in Glasgow. They married into the McGUIRE, O'CONNOR, LANG, DOCHERTY and BIGGINS families. I think the families below are all connected, but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone recognizes them.

1841 Census for Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland shows:-
- (1) James DIXON, 55 (so bc. 1786) Ireland, Hand loom weaver
- (2) Margaret DIXON, 40 (so bc. 1801) Ireland, wife
- (3) Elizabeth DIXON, 15 (so bc 1826) Renfrewshire, cotton-spinner
- (4) Mary DIXON, 15 (so bc 1826) Renfrewshire, cotton-spinner
- (5) Helen DIXON, 14 (so bc 1827), Renfrewshire, cotton-spinner
- (6) Martha DIXON, 12 (so bc 1829) Renfrewshire
- (7) William DIXON, 5 (so bc 1836) Renfrewshire
- (8) Thomas DIXON, 2 (so bc 1839) Renfrewshire
I think the above couple may be James DIXON and Margaret McGUIRE.

The family seem to appear again on 1861 Census for Calton, Glasgow:-
- (2) Margaret DICKSON, 61 (so bc 1800) Ireland
- (4) Mary DICKSON, 32 (so bc 1829) Neilston, Renfrewshire, bobbin winder
- (7) William DICKSON, 24 (so bc 1837) Neilston, Renfrewshire, labourer
- (8) Thomas DICKSON, 22 (so bc 1839) Neilston, Renfrewshire, labourer
- Agnes DICKSON, 19 (so bc 1842) Neilston, Renfrewshire

The 1881 Census for Glasgow appears to show what happened to some of the family:-
- (8) Thomas DICKSON, 41 (bc. 1840) Neilston, Renfrewshire, head
- Mary DICKSON, 40 (bc 1841) Greenock, Renfrewshire, wife
- James DICKSON, 19, Glasgow, [on IGI, b.1862 in Bridgeton]
- Margaret DICKSON, 16, Glasgow [on IGI, b.1864 Bridgeton]
- Mary DICKSON, 14, Glasgow [on IGI, b.1866 Glasgow]
- Martha DICKSON, 12, Glasgow [on IGI, b.1868 Springburn, Lanarkshire]
- Thomas DICKSON, 10, Glasgow [on IGI, b.1870 Springburn, Lanarkshire]
- Grace DICKSON, 8, Glasgow [on IGI, b.1872 Central District, Glasgow]
- William DICKSON, 6, (so bc 1875), Glasgow
- George DICKSON, 3, (so bc 1878), Glasgow
- (4) Mary DICKSON, 50, (so bc 1831), Neilston, sister
According to IGI, Thomas DICKSON married Mary O'CONNOR.

By the 1891 census, the family have moved to St. Rollox, Glasgow:-
- Thomas DICKSON, 51
- Mary DICKSON, 50
- Margaret DICKSON, 26
- Thomas DICKSON, 20

The 1881 Census for Barony, Lanarkshire shows what may have happened to more of the original family:-
- (7) William DICKSON, 42 (so bc 1839), Neilston, Renfrewshire, head
- Annie DICKSON, 33 (so bc 1848), Glasgow, wife
- William DICKSON, 13 (so bc 1868), Glasgow
- James DICKSON, 11, Glasgow [on IGI, b. 1869 Milton, Glasgow]
- Maggie DICKSON, 9, Glasgow [on IGI, b. 1871 Milton, Glasgow]
- Annie DICKSON, 8 (so bc 1873), Glasgow
- Donald DICKSON, 6 (so bc 1875), Glasgow
- Thomas DICKSON, 4 (so bc 1877), Glasgow
- Catherine DICKSON, 2 (so bc 1879), Glasgow
According to IGI, William DICKSON married Ann LANG.

The 1881 census for Barony, Lanarkshire shows the following:-
- (6) Martha DOCHERTY, 48 (so bc 1833), widow
- Martha DOCHERTY, 19, Glasgow [on IGI, b. 1861 Blythswood, Glasgow]
- Thomas DOCHERTY, 12, Glasgow [on IGI, b. 1868 Anderston, Glasgow]
According to IGI, Martha DICKSON married Daniel DOCHERTY.

I further think that no.(5) Helen DICKSON married John BIGGINS in 1850 and moved to Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.

I know that DICKSON or DIXON are popular surnames, but does anybody recognize these particular families?

Thanks.

Michelle
They went on to have 3 daughters Jane Ann (my gr. grandmother), Isabella and Jessie.
If anyone can help with Andrew or Eliza's ancestors ro place of birth, it would be greatly appreciated as we are stuck.

Thanks.
Researching Dicksons from Oklahoma

My Grandfather, Norman Dickson, was born in Tahleqhuah in 1927 to a Jerry and Corda Dickson. I do not have her maiden name. Norman is living now in Wichita, KS with his wife Laverne. He had two children Roger Dale(my Dad) and Gary Dean. I would just ask them(my Grandparents) for the info but for whatever reason they are real hush hush about it. He had several siblings: Dora(also Dode or Dodie), Bennie, Clara, Mildred, Lila, and a Bell. His parents I believe were both born in Oklahoma in 1898. I found a 1930 census that had them living in the township of Wauhillau in Adair county OK. The census listed only four children: Dora, Mildred, Bennie, and Norman. The others I guess were born after. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am seeking information about the family and marriage of John Walker and Helen (Ellen) Dickson (Dixon) in England.
Their son, Frank emigrated to Canada and lost touch with the family. I know that he had a sister called Annie.
He spoke of a grandmother called Charlotte, although I do not know which side of his family he was referring to.
His sister Annie was listed as his next of kin when he enlisted in 1918.
Robert, Alexander, Eliza and Margaret Dickson from Antrim, Ire

ROBERT DICKSON came to the United States from County Antrim, Ireland, when he was a young man, and finally located in what was known as Scott Township, PA, the village of Mount Lebanon, being about one mile away. Robert Dickson and his brother Alexander who came with him were stone masons. They worked at their trade about the country and then acquired a track of land of about fifty acres, which they cleared and built a log house on it. There the two brothers kept bachelor hall for about 4 years when Robert Married Agnes Ballintyne, the daughter of Rose Ann Kithcart and Joseph Ballintyne, who had come from County Down, Ireland, but were originally Scotch, migrating to Ireland during the persecutions of the Scotch Catholics under Queen Mary.

Robert Dickson and Agnes Ballintyne were married March 27, 1853; to them were born four children, who were John, James, Margaret Ann, and Mary Jane. Margaret Ann Married Edward MacFarlane Long of Mt. Lebanon and Mary Jane married Samuel Gamble of Mansfield, but now known as Carnegie, PA John Dickson married Mary Goodboy of MT. Lebanon and James Alexander married Hester Bausman of MT Lebanon. John Dickson had no children and James had nine, seven of whom are now living, in Western cities. Margaret Dickson Long had two children.

Grandfather Dickson had two sisters, Eliza Jane who married David Hill and Margaret Ann who married William Dalzell. Margaret A Dickson Dalzell lived to be 106 years old and was quite an interesting old lady until the time of her death. One of her daughters is all that remains of her family - - Mrs Theodore H. Bolce, Pittsburgh.
-------------------------
I am descendent of James Dickson and Hester bausman

Dickson/Deekson Breakthrough

I have been searching Canadian records for quite a while with many roadblocks (Dickson, Dixon, etc) and only today discovered that certain of my Dickson/Dixon ancestors were transcribed as "DEEKSON" and even "DEEMSON" due to the clear but somewhat odd shape of the "D" on the record. I also found what appeared to be "DICSON" where the record should have been "DIXON", again due to the hand of the writer of the record.

After working with ROBISON/ROBINSON/ROBERTSON et al for a few years, I found this DICKSON anomaly to be interesting and thought I'd pass it along!

I am trying to locate my great grandfather and his family. His name was James Dickson. In 1922 he lived in Checotah Oklahoma with his wife(at that time) Effie and their daughter Dessie Marie. Dessie was born on Oct. 23, 1922.James and Effie must of divorced sometime after that. I know that by 1932 Effie was married to Charles Sorenson and Dessie took on his last name. We also know that sometime after the divorce James had remarried and had a son named Carlos. We are also looking for Carlos and his family. Here on Carlos we know that he had a son that lived in Peoria or Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1964.
