I am the granddaughter of Doreen Didsbury who married jack washington in toronto canada around 1939. I was always told that Doreen's mother came to canada but evenually went back to England leaving Doreen behind with relatives because Doreen did not want to go back. Doreen was probably around 11-12 when her mother went back to england. I think Eliabeth andrews didsbury visited Doreen and my grandfather after they married but was ill and again returned to England and I believe she died a short time after that. I am surprised to learn of her adoptive brother who emmigrated to Canada around that time because we never met him or heard about him.

Hello, Thanks for your message. I'm sorry but I haven't come across your Povers in my research. There are so many Povers and so many misspellings of the name. Hannah Pover b.1857 Frodsham was my g.grandmother. She married Charles Roberts b.1856 Marford. I was born in Warrington but left there after I married. I don't remember the addresses you quote. I do have a couple of books on old Frodsham and surrounding area and if I come across anything connected to your research I'll be in touch. I live in France so any research I do is a bit complicated. Regards, Audrey Clark

hello, I'm not sure if I have a connection but my gt gt gt grandmother was Ann Pover born 1781 in frodsham married Samuel Noden born 1762. This was his 2nd marriage and they had 6 sons and a daughter. I have this old family tree one of the many Nodens did many years ago. I descend from the son called Edward Noden, who had a farm in Alvanley, Helsby and it stayed in the family for over 100 years.
On the tree it says that Ann Pover was of Melton Hall, does this make any sense to you perhaps you know of the place. It states that another son Thomas lived at Elton Hall this is a bit of a mystery to me as I'm not sure if there is a misprint or some other reason.
I hope this is of help
Regards Maggie Cheetham

It took sometime but you might find a thread from Kelly Dunlop ... Bert was born Herbert Richards - the son of Grace Andrews who was the sister of Elizabeth who was married to Henry Seth Didsbury. We are not sure why but Bessie and Henry Seth Didsbury adopted Bert at some point. When Henry Seth died Granny Bessie took the girls and emigrated to Canada (Bert also went to Canada). Kelly Dunlop is Bert's grand-daughter and I have contact with her. If you email me directly TheAngrysheep@msn.com I will put you in touch (although you are not related by birth). The thread from mepatterson does have some errors which have been iron out now ....

We noticed that mepaterson posted a comment this July about the bakery in Balls Road Birkenhead, you mentioned that your grandmother had adopted her nephew Bert Didsbury
We are researching the Didsbury family tree as my great grandfather was John Didsbury (born 1873) how owned the family bakery business, Could you tell me about Bert, who his father was? as the only Albert Didsbury that we have know of was Albert Cecil Didsbury born 1930 died 1981.
FAO mepaterson

Hi I am a bit confused about your information.

The Bakers was DIDSBURYs and owned by my great grandfather Henry Seth Didsbury who married Elizabeth (Bessie) ANDREWS. I have a photo of the bakery and when I was a child the building still existed with the name DIDSBURY built into the wall. They had 3 daughters Margaret (my grandmother), Doreen and Gwendoline. As far as we could work out Bessie and Henry adopted Herbert (Bert) Richards and as far as we could tell he was the son of her sister (Grace Andrews) who was married to a JOHN RICHARDS (Kelly Dunlop who has posted on this board is a descendent of Bert Richards). My great grandmother (Bessie) emigrated to Canada taking with her the 3 girls - Bert also went to Canada. Bessie's family including her sister Jane had previously emigrated. My grandmother Margaret came back to marry my grandfather Harris Lamb. Could you clarify how you are related to Grandma Bessie - I have a relative who has traced the Andrews line way back to 1550 Cornwall. My email is TheAngrysheep@msn.com. The only Jack I know of was JACK WASHINGTON who married Doreen and was Bessie's son in law.

My grandmother, Elizabeth Richards, adopted Bert Didsbury (her nephew) of the bakers Kelly's - top of Balls Road Birkenhead. She had 3 sisters Emma Anna Grace and a brother Richard (Dick). She had four children Rene Doris Mary Jack (my father) There are strong connections with Ontario Canada.
Hi

What I have confirmed about my Didsbury line is from Samuel Didsbury born Tarvin 1833 to mother Martha Didsbury. He was illigitimate. His mother Martha seems to have led an active life and produced other illigitimate children including Sarah born about 1834 and possibly two other children Elizabeth 1840 and Mary 1848. Samuel married Elizabeth Steaton and their children included Ann 1853, Joseph 1857, Mary 1860, Frank 1868, Emma 1871 and my g.grandfather William 1873.

I have not been able to track down a christening reference for the naughty Martha born about 1818 but believe her to have been christened Martha Johnson to mother Elizabeth Johnson who went on to marry Thomas Didsbury in Tarvin in 1821. Witnesses to that wedding were Mary Johnson and Joseph Didsbury. On the 1841 census Martha Didsbury is living with widow Mary Johnson in Tarvin. It all seems to fit.

The most likely christening reference I have for Thomas Didsbury is in Tarvin January 1797 to parents James and Martha Didsbury of Tarvin. They also had a son Joseph who could have been witness at the wedding.

As you can see most of my line are in Tarvin, but Mouldsworth and Manley are just a couple of miles up the road from Tarvin. I did in fact used to live just down the hill from Mouldsworth.

I have various bits and pieces and would be happy to share this with you. My email address is cowley@paulandsu.freeserve.co.uk

Best wishes

Su
You are so right about wishing I had asked questions but in fact my grandmother never wanted to talk about her family - its only last year that I found out about Bert who was Elizabeth's nephew and fostered by the family (see Kelly's post) - I have a box of old photos that are mainly un-named.... Tell me more about your line of Didsburys ....

Hi

I am connected to the Didsbury family from Tarvin and was born a Didsbury. I also have a photograph of the old bakery in Birkenhead owned by your ancestors and I do remember my grandparents visiting relatives in Birkenhead. How I wish I had asked lots of questions when they were still alive!!

I understand your relative Henry Seth Didsbury married Elizabeth Andrew in Holywell, Flintshire. His father John Didsbury, from the census age given, would appear to have been born in Tarvin about 1832. I have found a christening reference for a John Didsbury chr Tarvin 9 Sept 1832 which would seem to fit. His parents were William and Ellen Didsbury of Tarvin.
In 1841 they were living in Tarvin with children Ann 11, John 7, Mary 6 and Henry 2. In 1851 they were still in Tarvin with Henry 12 and William 8. This census gives father William`s birth place as Mouldsworth and from the age given he was born about 1805. I have a reference from Tarvin Parish Records for the christening of a William Didsbury February 1805 to mother Mary Didsbury of Mouldsworth. This would seem to fit. I have another reference from Tarvin PR for the christening of a Mary Didsbury February 1783 to parents Samuel and Margaret Didsbury of Mouldsworth. Could this be her?

Sorry if this is a bit rambling, but hope it is of interest.

Kindest regards,

Su

Theresa
Its a while since you posted this - I think we probably have a connection..

My grandmother's family - Didsbury - owned a Bakery in Birkenhead - I have a picture of the shop ... My great grandfather was Henry Seth Didsbury - he was a Master baker - unfortunately due to computer probs I dont have access to the dates and names at the moment but I think that the family came to Birkenhead from Tarvin in Cheshire - there were lots of people with similar names and dates of birth in that area so its difficult to see where the family lines are the same or different.

My Didsbury family emigrated to Canada between the wars and all except my grandmother settled there. My great grandmother kept travelling between the 2 countries and could not settle. There were no male offspring but my great grandparents fostered a nephew and I have made contact with his grand-daughter in Canada via this board ..

I have dabbled in the past trying to get more information but its so time consuming I have put it on the back burner for a while ...

Hello Matt, Many thanks for the information re Povers in Frodsham. I've just found a Thomas Pover, tobacconist in the 1891 Census living with his father, James Pover, mother Sarah and siblings. Thomas is 25. I can't find him in the 1901 Census. I think his father James is the brother of my g.g.grandfather, William Pover. Interesting your wife is a Pover born in Leigh. My maiden name was Roberts and I was born in Warrington. My Tree on Ancestry is the Clark Family Tree. Would welcome any further Pover information you happen to find. Thanks again. Regards, Audrey Clark

I do - in a roundabout way! My wife is a Pover, and we live in Frodsham!

There are posters in Frodsham detailing the town's history, and one has a picture of a tobacconists with "TA Pover" as the store name. I haven't been able to find any more about them.

Although my wife is from Mickle Trafford, her parents hail from Leigh, but it does seem that the Leigh Povers do descend directly from a Pover family that lived either in Frodsham (Frodsham Bridge I think) or Hapsford.

If you know more than I appear to do, I'd appreciate it!

Regards!

Matt

Looks like we have a link. I am from the Didsbury's that went to live in Birkenhead. My grandfather was Henry Seth Didsbury who was born in Tarvin. His wife was Elizabeth (Andrews) who emigrated to Canada in the 1920s (however she went to join family who had already emigrated earlier). I have just replied to another thread asking for the foster family of Bert Richards. I think I may also have sent an email to you from another link ;>. Not quite sure how the Didsbury's all link together there seem to be quite a few and often used the names James, Samuel and William which makes it more difficult to establish who is who. Any how I look forward to connecting with you.

I am so excited!!! I have been trying to solve this mystery!! My grandmother was Margaret Didsbury son of Henry Seth Didsbury and Elizabeth Didsbury (nee Andrews). My father has a a photo of Bert with Margaret, Doreen and (Sarah) Gwendoline when Bert was about 7. My Granny would not tell us about Bert but we guessed he was really a cousin. When Henry (a baker in Birkenhead) died the family emigrated to Ontario (could be in the photos mentioned in an earlier thread) but Margaret came back to marry my grandfather Herbert Harris Lamb. My cousin Barbara has been researching the Andrews family tree. Jane Andrews (sister to Grace and Bessie) lived in Ontario - she lived to be over 100. Hope to hear from you. sarah cross PS where are you?

My matrilineal line goes back to Didsbury, Martha Hannah who was Samuel's sister, Robert was a brother as was Richard, sisters were Eliza, Sarah Ann and Mary Ann. Sarah Ann died aged 24 but the others lived on. Martha married Lemuel Woodhead and their daughter, Nellie, my grandmother went to Australia with her husband Arthur Judkins with their two daughters Nellie Winifred and Marjorie, my mother. They had two more daughters in Oz. My mother married twice and I was the issue of her second marriage. If you are Robert's ancestor then we may well be related. I must say I could not find trace of Robert after 1881 in England so it may well be our Robert. I have lots of infromation regarding earlier Didsburys. They originally hailed from Nottinghamshire.

Thank you so much Jacqui. It freaks me out a bit you know so much. I will get an email address off to you. There are so many things I want to know. Thank you again so much. By the way, I am David's son. Sadly, my uncle Philip passed away a few years ago. I look forward to corresponding with you.

Hi, Lovely to hear from you at last! Are you David's son, or Philip's?
My Aunt Maureen Kreisig was at your grandmothers funeral, and sent back a remembrance card for my mother My Aunt lives in Burlington.

Your Grandmother arrived in Saint John , New Brunswick aboard the Canadian Pacific MONTCLARE on 30/12/1928.
She was born 14/4/1908 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, daughter of Tom Stroud and Elizabeth (Betty) Fry. Mail me off list and I can give you a huge amount of data relating to your Stroud ancestry
