My mother's father's mother was Augusta (in Prussia Ernestina Augustina Albertina) Dieck, born 25 Feb, 1858 in Selchow, kreis Grifenhagen, Pommern, Prussia. Deek is the correct Germanic pronounciation, but in the 1880 census, Town of Grant, Shawano County, Wisconsin, they are recorded as Dick. And in some of the marriage records family members are recorded as DICK.. I was told this was an attempt to Americanize themselves. But the family who remained in Shawano County and who married other Prussians went back to saying DEEK while the ones who settled in Suring, Oconto County, Wisconsin said Dick.

Hi, we are the Dieck family - live in CT but most relatives live in NY. The Grandfather of this family was Robert Arthur Dieck, born in Waterbury CT, around 1930. There were five children of that family - Noel, Dorothy, Harry, and Kay.
We are wondering how the rest of the Dieck's pronounce their name -> Deek, Dike, Di-yeck? What is the correct pronunciation?

I don't know a lot about my dads side other than, my father, Charles E Dieck, was born in Brooklyn, in 1927. He has an older brother, Fred, he lives in Kearny, NJ. And a younger brother Ralph, He lived in Colorado Springs, Co. So, I'm not sure if we are related or not.

Re: Researching descendants of George Dieck of Mecklinburg, Germany

George Henry DIECK was a German man (a "steamer" on the MS River) who m. 13 May 1907 Miss Ida Ewing SEYMOUR d/o CAPT Franklin Monroe SEYMOUR & Augustine Palmyra CHAMPAGNE in Plaquemine Iberville Parish LA. His family origin is unknown to me at this time. He d.10 January 1941 (presumed in) New Orleans LA as that is where they were living at the time. Grand Aunt Ida never remarried. They had children: 1. Madaline (Madeleine) b. 1908 m. "Eddie" Elmire Elmess and had one child Carolyn Ann Elmess b. 1945;2. & 3. twins Margaret M. and Marjorie M. b. 1910. Marjorie d. 1911 and Margaret never married. The F. M. SEYMOUR Bible shows H.T. Dieck d. 18 May 1917...he is presumed to be a son of George Henry & Ida Ewing Seymour DIECK.There is a connection to the Mississipi River, the Ohio River and the state of Illinois for the SEYMOUR family. Captain Seymour was a "steamer" for sixteen years on Bayou Plaquemine and the Mississippi. Two German brothers from Grand Chene (Chain) Illinois, George W. and Ishmal Lee STROHM,who worked for him on his boat married two of his daughters Mamie Ellen Seymour m. 1899 and Lillian Tennessee Seymour m. 1900 respectively in PlaquemineIberville Parish LA. Ida Ewing Seymour m. George Henry Dieck was his third dau. I find no record of an earlier DIECK or DEICK family in Louisiana; I presume that George Henry DIECK came from another area upriver. At some point George Henry DIECK may have been connected in Illinois to your DIECK family from Germany. I have found one George DEICK who was a stowaway on a ship from Germany. I am currently researching the STROHM/SEYMOUR family which includes Ida Ewing Seymour & George Henry DIECK (Rosalyn Strohm Gay is my double second cousin...she is a granddaughter of Mamie E. Seymour & George W. Strohm; I am a granddaughter of Lillian T. Seymour & Ishmal L. Strohm). Lee STROHM Harrell Jacksonville Florida

Hello to my fellow Diecks!

I am researching the descendants (and perhaps ancestors) of George Dieck, who immigrated to the United States from Mecklinburg, Germany. His wife was Sophie Maley. His children were Ernest, Clara, Hela, Gertrude, Louise, and George. (The younger George was my great grandfather). I do not have any birth or death dates of these people.

The younger George immigrated from Mecklinburg to Waukegan, Illinois (don't know the date). He was born in 1884, married Rose Fagan in 1906, and died in 1963.

I would be very interested in any information that could be provided about ancestors or descendants of this family.
Thank you.
Tracy Dieck

None of these names match the names of my descendants, although I do find it interesting that George Henry was a "steamer." Our family lore indicates that our George was a "sailor." All our George Diecks, however, had the middle name of Joseph.

If I come across something that seems to connect to your family I'll be in touch.

Thanks for the response.

Maybe there's a connection further back in the family tree.

The George Dieck I mentioned in my query had a son, George Joseph Dieck, who married Rose Fagan somewhere in Illinois. They had a son, George Joseph Dieck, my grandfather, who married Margaret Casey.

Just curious -- do you know what part of Germany your George Dieck is from?

Dieck Family from Wanna, Germany

Greetings. I am beginning a search on my father's family, the Diecks. His grandfather landed in New York about the time of the Franco-Prussian War with several brothers. We know that one, Rudolph, went on to Australia. Dad's grandfather was Adolph Dieck, and he married Augusta Rebecca Katrina Thole in 1892. Adolph's father was Theo Dieck, and we suspect that he lived in Wanna, Germany. I expect that there is probably little overlap between the Diecks of Wisconsin and the Diecks of New York, but am posting this in hopes that someone might recognize one of the names. Thanks, in advance, for any replies.

My great grandmother was Albertina "Tina," nee Dieck, who married her cousin, (my great grandfather) Julius Pockat.
There were many Pockat, Dieck Fritz families in the Marion, WI area.
Another family, Hoepner or Hepner, was also related.

Carl moved to Roggentin/Roggenlin Mecklenburg and settled at Krien, Kreis Anklam, Pommern, around 1725. May be a connection with your family.

I don't know if any of my Dieck family members lived in Brooklyn or Richmond Hill.

Here is some of my Dieck information:

Augustus Dieck, b. Nov. 1872, Manhattan, NY,
m. Susie ?

Children:
1. Augustus Dieck, Jr., b. Jan. 1898,
Manhattan, NY

2. Harry Dieck, b. Nov. 26, 1899, Manhattan,
NY, d. Oct. 1984, Rockland, NY

I believe both Augustus and Harry were police
officers in New York City.

Could the August Dieck you refer to about 70 years old be a child of Augustus or Harry?
If any of these names match, please contact me. I have earlier Dieck family information to share.

Dieck, Fritz, Johnson(Jensen), Burger surnames

My great great grandparents were Louise Fritz b.1831 and Ferdinand Dieck b.1826, both born in Pomerania, Germany, coming to America 1873 or 1874. Among their offspring was my great grandmother Augusta E. Dieck b.1858 who is a sister to your Albertine Ernestina Dieck. Augusta met and married Hemming Jensen in Shawno, WI. He was from Denmark and when arriving here Americanized his name to Henry Johnson. Henry and Augusta moved to Oconto County, WI and lived there and in Madison, WI for the rest of their lives. Henry was the Wisconsin State Treasurer for many years. My grandmother was Elsie Johnson, one of the children in the second family Augusta and Henry raised after the first three children died of a plague in Town of How, Oconto Co, WI.
Would love to exchange information with you, since I have very little on Ferdinand Dieck and Louise Fritz lines in Germany. I am sure we could help one another.
