Diehl in Northumberland Co., Pa

I have found out that my Dale ancestors were Diehl's in Northumberland county. In the 1850 Fed Census there is a John Diehl and family. He is aged 61 born in Pa. Wife is 35 yr old Sarah (his second wife I believe). Children at home are:
George 25 PA Farmer
Mary 23 PA
Elizabeth 20 PA
Leah 17 PA
Franklin 15 PA

near him are two of his married sons Samuel 35 and William 29. Samuel is who I descend thru. He along with his brothers George, William, Henry and Jacob migrate to Iowa. Henry and Jacob migrating to Ohio first. They all are in Monroe Co., Iowa by 1860. And going by Dale in records then.

Diehl in the 1900 census, born Sept 1878 living in Franklin Twp, Adams County whose parents were James F. and Arabella E., siblings Frederick, John, Robert, Elizabeth, and Samuel - all born in PA [ED 2, sheets 5A&B].

Searching for a WW1 draft registration for Oscar yielded this:

Oscar Nevin Diehl
York, York Co, PA
DOB: 19 Sept 1878
age: 39
native born
next of kin: Catherine Day Diehl

So, it looks like James and Arabella may well have been his parents.

-MJ

Re: The Diehls of Philadelphia

In researching I just saw your post of Sept. 12, 2005 in which you state that you are a descendant of Smion Jacob Diehl, who came to Philadelphia from Germany on 10-12-1741 from Frankfort. Two brothers William and John Peter came before him. Family moved to NC 1842.

I am descended from Jacob Diehl (Deal) who came from Germany to Phil. Don't know exact date, but ca. 1741 would fit. However, my Jacob came to NC in the late 1700's. His son (my gggrandfather, Henry) was born in 1779 in Lincoln Co. Jacob owned land in Burke Co. (the county lines changed a few times in that period). It sounds like we might be tracing the same Jacob. If you have any more info on him(his wife's name, list of children, etc.) it would be very helpful. Will be glad to share info with you if this is the same Jacob. Please contact me at dsiebenmorgen@cablelynx.com.

Re: Barbara Diehl , married to Abraham Page

Hi, Have you found anything out about Barbara Diehl?
I am also descended from Barbara and Abraham and we are actually related doubly because Abraham and Barbara's daughter Catherine Page(sister to Abraham) was married to John Niemond jr. who was your ancestress' brother.

Catherine and John Niemond Jr. named their daughter, my ancestor Margaret. She was named after our ancestress Margarethe Gutte (Page).

This family almost always follow the PA dutch naming pattern tradition. Margaret Niemond married Jacob Weiser. Their daughter Malinda Weiser Sheaffer (married EG Sheaffer) and named her first daughter Margaret as well. She had a daughter Carrie Sheaffer Witmer(married John witmer) who named her 1st daughter Margaret. 1st daughters are usually named after their mother's mother (maternal grandmother). So if Catherine is Barbara's 1st daughter, Barbara's mother's name could well be Catherine. This is just a guess, of course.

Catherine Barge/Page and her husband John Niemond jr. settled in Elkhart Indiana and were there in 1860 by the time of Barbara's estate sale. Now I don't think Abraham would have been old enough to fight in the War of Independence and his father Juerg(George) would have been in his 50s and although they helped defend the frontier against the Indian attacks, I am not too sure if his Mennonite beliefs would have allowed him to fight against the British. Cousins of ours have a very informative page listed below. If you find any info on Barbara Diehl(or the Niemonds) I'd be thankful .
Mark Grubb

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~foulkrod/p...

It is my understandung that my great great grandmother (Anna Diehl) had a bakery in Watsontown, PA in the late 1800's. I'm hoping someone might have more information about the bakery and where the family came from in Germany.
Anna's daughter (Margaret)married Jay Lindauer who was also from Watsontown. Information on his family would be helpful as well.
German Solider Obgefr Diehl Died after 8/1944

A friend recently discovered several items belonging to a WWII German solider, possibly a aviator/officer.

The hat has a handwritten tag with the name Diehl Obgefr or Obgefe. Handwriting isn't very clear but that is what they think it says.

A newspaper dated Aug. 2, 1944 is used to hold the hat sides up. A picture was found in the belt pouch of a burial of 3 soliders surrounded by a dozen other soliders. The burial has 3 helmets atop a mound w/ the nazi swastika outlined in rocks or some other material.

I am attempting to locate anyone with knowledge of this family name-I realize I possibly have Diehl as a first name and probably should be the surname. Possibly a return of the hat and some other items can be made if a direct family member is available.

Thanks for any help.

Looking for Henry Diehl and Henry Meyer's Home on Salzburg Road

in Monitor Township, Bay County, Michigan. On the 1896 Map of Monitor Township, Henry Diehl lived on Lot 26. In 1916, Henry's son-in-law, Henry Meyer, who married his daughter, Louisa Diehl, lived on the same Lot 26. Is the house still there? What is the address? I believe that the house may be between Two and Four Mile Roads.

Just found this in the Lehigh Co HS Vital records gleaned from newspapers......HARVEY DIEHL of Emaus, married Mrs. LENA MILLER of Emaus, date of marriage not reported by the paper....found in the "Macungie Progress" newspaper of 19 SEPT 1907. Since they were both from Lehigh Co their marriage will likely be in those county records.

I have been working on my family history for several years and always hit a brick wall at my gr-gr grandfather, Baltzer Diehl!!!! My gr grandfather was Robert Deal (the spelling of the name got changed somewhere right in here. Don't know if it was Robert or Baltzer-have heard several different stories). Any way the family migrated from KS-OK-NE-WY, where I am at. Contact me please @ williamdeal@bresnan.net. Please put Baltzer in the coments line.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Bill

Catherine

Not to worry I am plenty confused as it is already. Up until last week I did not know where my Charles/Carl/Karl Diehl had come from. I thought he had come from Bremen becuase that is where the family thought his wife Catherina/e Herr (?) came from.

Lucky for me he traveled back to Germany in 1922, why I do not know but I found his passport application thanks to the new index Ancestry just announced. It was on this document that I found where he was from in Germany and his fathers name. I also found on the passport that he had stayed in Connecticut (a short time) then moved to New York. This I did not know. I knew he and his family lived in New York. Since they immigrated in 1892 I just assumed they traveled into NY and stayed there as they are on the 1900 census. After finding the passport application I then confirmed the the Karl Diehl I had a New York Petition For Naturalization was indeed my Carl Diehl. I also had a death cert that I now know is my gggggrandfather Charles Diehl.

Now on the Petition for Naturalization is where I found that he arrived into the port of Philidelphia instead of the port of New York. So my Diehls could very well be realated to yours. Since most of my research has been in New York City I have pretty much ignored the Diehls from other states even though I knew there was a chance someone else in the family had come over from Germany with him. Or he was coming to the US to a place where someone in his family had already settled. I will have to reseacrh the other areas now and if you have any website you'd like to share I would love to check them out. I have not done any research in Germany yet.

Arlene

Thank you so much for the information on Ambrose Diehl. The descendants of Ambrose Diehl and Christiane (Anna. Annie) Amelia Hawk were Jennie May (7/6/1885-6/13/1963), Carl John Diehl( 4/26/1906-4/22/1968), and Herbert Joseph Diehl (1888-?). Jennie (my grandmother) married Wilson Prechtel and
later lived with Frank Hartenstine. Carl married Minnie Onjack. Herbert married
Carrie Weaver and had 16 children. Jennie and Wilson had 2 living children,
Gladys Prechtel and Paul Prechtel and a deceased baby, Dorothy May Prechtel.
Gladys (my mother) married William F. Hucke and had one child, me! (Sandra
Hucke Sowers). Paul Prechtel changed his last name to Preston and moved to IL and had two sons, Rick and Scott Preston. I, Sandra Sowers, have one son- Jayson Sowers married to Wendy Root and they have 2 children. I have other miscellaneous details. You could contact me directly at athena123@earthlink.net.

I may be confusing things for you, but my Diehls came from Rutsweiler an der Lauter, about 13 miles north of Kaiserslautern. They arived about 1850, and located in the Boston, Massachusetts area. I thoroughly researched my Diehls (with great difficulty) by using the LDS German records from Rutsweiler. The area was think with Diehls. The name is like "Smith" in the US. Your early Diehls could be from this area.

Hello Ed: The only info that I have relating to the large DIEHL family in DElaware came from you in a report on Adam Diehl of New Castle Co. Sarah/Susan was the daughter of Nicholaus (aka) George Nicolaus Diehl who was married to Elizabeth Thompkins and then Eliza Hunt. Susan was born about 1820. Nicolaus was the son of Adam Diehl (1767- ) and hias friend Mary Brooks. Hope this circle helps. George Diehl

I am from the Diehl family, my grandmother was Dollie Josephine Diehl-married William L. Richardson (lived in Iowa) her father was John Diehl(born in Ohio- lived in Osceola,Clarke Co. Iowa, his father was Jacob Diehl who was son of Philip. Jacob married Nancy Good. All of the children were hers. After she died he remarried Sphia Locke.
I would like to know the father of Philip...if possible. I know where most of the family ended up in the United States. However the beginning end is a "dead-end" as far as I can see.If you would like more info-please write me.Lraerichardson@aol.com

This may not be much help, but my great-grandfather was Ambrose Diehl from the same area you are searching and born in 1859. I have not had much luck with this line, but I believe his father's name might be Benjamin. I purchased the book, "Diehls in America" and they are not included. I would be interested in any information you have on the Diehl lines in Northampton and Lehigh Counties in Pennsylvania.
