Ernest John Diette Sr., 83, of 108 Fitch St., formerly of Orange, died Sunday at his home at 825 Ketch Drive, Naples, Fla., after a long illness. He was the husband of Miriam McGovern Holzberg Diette. A son of the late Ernest Louis and Mary Gray Diette, he was born in Lowell, Mass., Jan. 3, 1916. Mr. Diette was a 1940 graduate of Northeastern University and attended Harvard University. He was employed at Winchester Repeating Arms, the Armstrong Rubber Co., the Burndy Corp. and, from 1957 to retirement in 1980, was controller and a director of Hershey Metal Products, Penn-Keystone Corp. and Hoff-Stevens Inc. of Ansonia.
He was Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving as a navigator in North Africa in the 15th Air Force. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the Racebrook Country Club, a royal member of the Imperial Golf Club of Naples, the Pyramidiers 98th Bomb Group Veterans Association and the Irish-American Club of Naples. In addition to his wife, he leaves daughters, Diane Wypychoski of Milford and Patricia and Maryann Diette of Orange; sons, Ernest J. Diette Jr. of Milford, Dr. James Diette of Darien, Dr. Kevin Diette of Woodbridge and Raymond Diette of Guilford; a brother, Arthur Diette of Helena, Mont., and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Donahue Diette, sisters, Dinah Carlson and Lillian Battis and brothers, Raymond and James Diette
