Bernard Peter (Bernie) Dietz
Bernard Peter Dietz, 83, passed away March 9, 2009 at Altercare of Wadsworth, Ohio. He was born May 2, 1925 in Kersey, Pa. to Peter and Anna (Krellner) Dietz. He grew up on a farm and loved hiking in the woods. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served in the Philippines during WWII. After the war he completed his high school education in State College, Pa. He moved to Erie and found work at General Electric. He married Lenore Alice Bennett in 1951 and they lived in Lawrence Park for 57 years. He worked at GE as a machinist until his retirement in 1988. Bernard enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, woodworking, gardening, beekeeping, and hiking, and traveling. He was known by family and friends for his baking and wine making, and threw many pizza parties, serving his homemade pizza and wine. In 1992 his wife Lenore became ill, and he devoted the next two years of his life to caring for her until her death in 1994. He then spent many years as a volunteer for Metro Erie Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed meeting his friends at the Erie Center for Heath & Aging, and was active in the Retirees Association of General Electric and the UE 506. When he could no longer live alone, he moved to Wadsworth, Ohio to be near his daughter Bernadette in 2007. For awhile he lived in independent living before going to Altercare. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Ralph, Philip, Alfred, and Cornelius Dietz, sisters, Mary Murnaghan, Helen Gahr, and Eva Burdick. He is survived by his daughter, Bernadette and husband James Davis of Wadsworth, Ohio and grandsons, Joseph Davis of Akron, Ohio and Andrew Davis of Chicago, Ill., sisters, Gertrude Ferris of Columbia, Mo. and Anna Mae (Paul) Parmigiani of Kersey, Pa., brother in law, Arthur Bennett of Erie, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at G. R. Bailey Funeral Home, 4396 Iroquois Ave, Erie, PA 16511. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Monday, March 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor David Laakso officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.
