Re: Origns of the Dietz surname

The common view (which may not make it right) is that the name is Germanic (from the period of the Holy Roman Empire which dominated most of what is now Germany plus a lot more)and there is evidence in the record as far back as the 14th century. There are Dietz's (and name variations) in Holland but also Russia, Alsace, etc. One interesting fact to note is that most of the Germanic immigrants to the U.S. in the 1600s (New York)and 1600-1700s (Pennsylvania and few to Va and NC) came through ports in Holland. A common trek was down the Rhine to Rotterdam then to Cowes or another English port and then on to the English colonies. It was not uncommon for some immigrants to not make the complete journey staying in Holland or England. So, your line back could very well stop in Holland or it could extend back into the Palatinate, Bavaria, etc. I should note that I have seen a couple times where people tracking their genealogy traced back to the ship record which said the ship originated at Rotterdam. They made the leap of faith that their ancestor was Dutch when if fact their ancestor came down the Rhine and originated from elsewhere. So, my advice is to always ask for the reference. If the record used to justify Dutch is a ship record then you have a whole new exciting thread to work on. If it's an immigration permit or a church record then you can be much more sure Holland was a terminus .... at least for time period.

Re: Origns of the Dietz surname

Well .... this can get complicated. Unfortunately, I cannot do Old German Script on my keyboard. If your ancestor came to the U.S. prior to 1800 then you might want to consider a misinterpretation in the past. One variation of "ss" is a character that looks something like a bold "B" with a little tail. So, for example (best I can do with this keyboard) a RiBler is most likely really a Rissler. But the English folks would assume it's Ribler. "tz" was frequently used for "z" so in the earlier post using Dietz for Diez would not have been wrong or a misspelling. Finally, in some examples of script that bold "B" actually looks like a TZ mashed together so an easy leap could be Diltz from Dilss. I'd suggest looking at a couple of the sites that explain the script, then look at real examples (it varies in practice a lot). You may want to consider alternate spellings of the name. A quick browse by me brought up one site that has Dilss, Dils,Dilts, and Diltz as name variations with common ancestors. Finally, you should understand that Germanic immigrants in the U.S., still practiced their religion and their church records are usually in script in that time period. For example, the Lutheran churchs in both Philadelphia and in Hickory NC (christening, deaths, communion, etc.) are both in German and in script. And unfortunately, different writers used different script rules .... but that does make it easy to determine when the individuals writing the records changed. Since I've gone this far I may as well really go off the deep end. The German ship records of this era were many (most?) times written by English speaking clerks. If the immigrant could not write the clerk just wrote down what it sounded like (as you probably know this commonly happened with census records too). Good luck.

Does anyone know of male Dietz descendants (Y-DNA) that have done the DNA testing and have a profile they are willing to share. I have done up to the 37 marker test and have a profile that is through "Family Tree DNA". My Dietz line came from the Palatinate in the mid 1700s into Philadelphia then migrated south to Western North Carolina where they remained for 6 generations (Hickory area and then further west to Macon/Jackson counties).
Thanks

I have a major Dietz line in my family. The furthest ancester I've been able to trace back to is a Charles Dietz. I believe he was born in Germany. Later generations are prominent in Michigan. Do you have any additional information on your Charles, such as birthdate, birthplace, names/locations of children? I've been out of town for an extended period so will have to do some digging in my records, but the name Rosina seems very familiar to me.

Hello...I don't know if I have any connection to the Dietz's referred to in these previous posts made in 2000, but I do have a Dietz line. Locations I have so far for my Dietz are Germany, Canada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, & possibly Maryland. If you have any connection to these areas, I would be happy to converse with you! :-) Jewel

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Ella Meyer Dietz”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Milwaukee, WI, and she looks about two years old.

I found Ella in the family of Fred and Selma Meyer, in 1900 Oak Creek (Milwaukee Co.) WI census. Her birthdate is listed as Sep 1884, and her sister is Dornetta/Arnetta, born Sep 1886, and brother, Alfred, born Dec 1887. 1910 Milwaukee census shows her as wife of Arnold Dietz.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Ella Meyer Dietz.

Hello all! I am returning to my family history project after a short absence... stuck as usual..

I have some family stories (accuracy about 75%) of an Ida Dietz marrying a John THOMAS. they had a child together, George, in Minersville, Pa...

I was also told John died before George was born... meaning some time in 1887

Ida went on to marry again, Joe SPOTTS where they are supposedly buried in Frackville, Pa

Any and all information or leads would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yes, I'm positve that my grandfather is the Carl you described. James being the oldest was called Jimmy. Jesse being the second oldest is called Wayne. Wayne is Jesse's middle name and Betty is my mother. Carl and Bonnie went own to have three more children their names are Ronnie, Jenny and Joseph(goes by Joe). I think the last 3 children were born in Georgia. I'm sorry to say but everyone above is dead except Joe he's the youngest. Everbody else has past away with cancer. My mom(Betty) died three years ago. She was only 56 years old. I don't know alot about my family listed above. It's to much to go into right now. If you have anymore information for me or if I can be of help to you please let know. I am the daugther of Betty Seagle whose mother and father were Carl Seagle and Bonnie Dietz-Seagle.

Lisa

I probably need a little more information before I look to see if there is a tie. If your Seagles are Carl and Bonnie that had some children (maybe not a complete set) named Betty, James, and Jessie then the Carl is likely the Carl Seagle from Macon County NC born 1924 and in the 1930 census. If you are familar with the lay of the land Macon is near the four corners (NC, SC, Georgia, and Tennessee all come together). I have quite a bit of information on the Dietz family in Macon and Jackson County et al since the 1830s (when my Dietz line migrated there from Lincoln now Catawba County. I can look through to see if your Bonnie pops up but to be honest it's like a needle in the haystack without a little more info. The Dietz's multiplied like rabbits between 1840 and 1930 in that area. Can you confirm the Carl I describe is your Carl?
