Hello all! I am returning to my family history project after a short absence... stuck as usual..

I have some family stories (accuracy about 75%) of an Ida Dietz marrying a John THOMAS. they had a child together, George, in Minersville, Pa...

I was also told John died before George was born... meaning some time in 1887

Ida went on to marry again, Joe SPOTTS where they are supposedly buried in Frackville, Pa

Any and all information or leads would be GREATLY appreciated!

During my recent research I came across a photograph of MARGARET WILLSEY who married JOHAN JOST ADAM DIETZ. According to Berne NY Genealogy, she was born Feb 4, 1792 and married Johan Dietz in 1808, and died Aug 5, 1865. She was a daughter of HENDRICK WILLSEY and ELIZABETH (MARGARET) WAGGONER

Although I am not particually researching DIETZ or WILLSEY, I am attaching a scan of this photo for your records or research if you would like it.

Russ Tallman
Helderberg Tallman's Genealogy
http://www.helderbergtallmans.com/

DIETZ, ROBERT H ; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

DIETZ, ROBERT H .

Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company A, 38th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division. Place and date: Kirchain, Germany, 29 March 1945. Entered service at: Kingston, N.Y. Birth: Kingston, N.Y. G.O. No.: 119, 17 December 1945. Citation: He was a squad leader when the task force to which his unit was attached encountered resistance in its advance on Kirchain, Germany. Between the town's outlying buildings 300 yards distant, and the stalled armored column were a minefield and 2 bridges defended by German rocket-launching teams and riflemen. From the town itself came heavy small-arms fire. Moving forward with his men to protect engineers while they removed the minefield and the demolition charges attached to the bridges, S/Sgt. Dietz came under intense fire. On his own initiative he advanced alone, scorning the bullets which struck all around him, until he was able to kill the bazooka team defending the first bridge. He continued ahead and had killed another bazooka team, bayoneted an enemy soldier armed with a panzerfaust and shot 2 Germans when he was knocked to the ground by another blast of another panzerfaust. He quickly recovered, killed the man who had fired at him and then jumped into waist-deep water under the second bridge to disconnect the demolition charges. His work was completed; but as he stood up to signal that the route was clear, he was killed by another enemy volley from the left flank. S/Sgt. Dietz by his intrepidity and valiant effort on his self-imposed mission, single-handedly opened the road for the capture of Kirchain and left with his comrades an inspiring example of gallantry in the face of formidable odds.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Kingston, New York

Cemetery: Wiltwych Rural Cemetery

Born: 1921 at Kingston, NY

Died: 1945 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/dietz...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Dietz Family

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Benjamin Dietz born 18 November 1873 his wife Emily (Story) born 1878, both in Hull, Yorkshire, England. They married on 17 Dec 1900 in Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire and nothing has been found of them since. Did they leave the country or change their name? Benjamin's family often used the name of Deeds. His elder brother George Henry has not been found since 1889 when he was in court on a charge of theft. Their grandparents were George and Elizabeth Dietz from Hessen Darmstadt, but we do not know the village or town. Elizabeth's maiden name was Siegfried.
Frank P. Dietz

Frank P. Dietz, son of John and Susanna (Lutman) Dietz, was born in Hellam Township, January 18, 1847; was brought up on the home farm and began milling in 1868, learning his trade at Diehl’s Mill, Spring Garden Township. He worked two years at this mill as a journeyman, after learning his trade, and ran it on his own account for eight years, when he removed to his present location, known at this time as Louck’s Mill, on the Baltimore Pike, four miles south of York, near New Paradise, he having purchased this valuable mill property, which embraces ninety-six acres of good land in connection with a large saw and flour mill. In December, 1870, Mr. D. married Clayanna Jane Dosch, daughter of J. C. and Charlotte (Leber) Dosch, of Windsor Township. Six children have been born to them: Mary M., John C., Dora S., Eddie (deceased), Harry S. and Charles L. (deceased). Mr. D. has a large custom trade in York, Paradise and Loganville for his flour, and is the fortunate possessor of the best water power in York Township, which enables him to run his mill in dry seasons when the neighboring mills are forced to stop. Mr. D. is a member of the Reformed Church of New Paradise, and has been a member of Conewago Tribe I. O. of R. M. of York, Penn.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Henry Dietz

Henry Dietz, son of Eli Dietz, of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County, was born January 16, 1848, and was reared on the home farm. His first work on his own account was driving a mill team for Henry McCormick for two years and a half. In 1877 he commenced farming on the old homestead, but in 1879 moved to Andersontown, and started a blacksmith shop; never having learned the trade however, he employed John Miller, an excellent workman and a finished coachsmith, to superintend; together they made a success, and through Mr. Miller’s advice, coach making in a small way was added, and the business so flourished that Mr. Dietz was compelled to erect a one story blacksmith shop ad a two story carriage shop, and he is now conducting the leading industry of the village. Mr. Dietz and wife became members of the Bethel Church, at Andersontown, in 1882, and they have had born to them two children: Jacob Eby, August 21, 1877, died September 22, 1877, and John L. Neatly written on the inside cover is the name Richard Maxmililan Dietz. The first signature is missing so i don't have a publication date, but the book is obviously very old ...
I would be happy to send this volume to any family member who may have an interest.

multiple use of christian name in a family

I have recently received a lot of detail about various branches of my Dietz family in Nordeck, Hessen. I notice that there appears to be frequent use of the same christian name in the same family. For instance one family had three Johannes, all living, and another had three Elisabeths, both of whom survived to marry.

Was this common in the early 19c ? and how on earth did they distinguish one child from another in the family context ?

Cheers..Ed

Dietz / Deitz families of Berne and Schoharie

I am descended from three of the Dietz siblings who were among the early Berne settlers. I have found that most histories of the Dietz family, and Dietz genealogies, have serious errors. It is common that they mis-identify the massacred Johannes as the family scion. They also have the captured Capt. Wm. Dietz leaving many descendants -when in fact he left no heirs since all of his children were massacred. In attempt to correct errors and myths I am in the process of writing a detailed history of the first generation of the Dietz / Deitz families of Berne and Schoharie. It will point out common errors and cite evidence for my conclusions. If you would like, let me know your address and I will e-mail you a copy.

Book with history of the DIETZ family

Those researching the DIETZ family from Baden-Württemberg might be interested in a book written by Johannes Bischoff in 1936 about the family. It covers the period 1600 to the 1920s. Although the book focuses mainly on the branch of the family that settled in Coburg, it mentions other branches of the family in Nürnberg, Königsberg, Weismain, etc. as well as families related by marriage and those who emigrated to America. In addition to the usual info (names, dates, etc) there are pictures of family members, the DIETZ coat-of arms from 1623 mounted above the former DIETZ residence in Königsberg, as well as information about the legal and business dealings of the family. The book has been filmed by LDS, film #1181600, item 10, and is available through a local Family History Center. I found the book to be an extremely valuable source of information. It's written in German, but obtaining names, dates, town names, etc. does not require a knowledge of German.

Conrad Dietz immigrated from Alce-Lorraine to PA. He married Johanna Bortz, b. ? in Berlin Germany,, d 1938/9 in Pittsburgh. Children from this union were Elizabeth, Conrad d Jan 1960, Clara , Henry, b 1855. d 1905, Vesta b 1904, Marie (Deedee). Conrad married Elizabeth ?, then married my grandmother Mildred Mae McCall. Vesta married Clarence (Jimmy) Germann. As far as I know all of these individuals died in the Pittsburgh area and are buried at either the Allegheny Memorial Park in McCandless or the Voeghtly Cemetery in Troy Hill. Any other information would be greatly appreciated. It's hard to narrow down this lineage due to the plethera of Dietz' out there. Thank you Zoe

Found a note in an old genealogy book (ca 1948). In reference to my 3gr-grandmother, Elizabeth Dietz b. 1807, it mentions that she came over from Germany with her sisters Dorothea, Mary, and Margarethe (no birthdates given). Brother George and 'Father' came later. Last notation states that "George settled in Carlisle, Pa."

Would like to find 'Father' Dietz name. Wondering if there are any researchers from George's line. I'm not sure where to start with the sisters, either. Elizabeth Dietz was married to a Komp, and they ended up in Indiana by 1850.

Thanks much.

George Dietz born c 1817 in Hessen Darmstadt son of Jacob Dietz a farmer. George came to Hull, England c 1844 and married Elizabeth ?Siegfried born c 1815 Hessen Darmstadt
(probably Grossen Buseck). She was the daughter of Philllip a cordwainer. They had three children Phillip who died young, Heinrich died in Hull aged 35 and Elizabeth who married Thomas Walker. Heinrich's son Benjamin married Emily Story in Barton in 1900, but nothing found of them since. Is this family related to yours? Am anxious to find out where George was born and what other family he may have had.
