Possible relative, Susan Diggs born: 1780, Lovingston, Nelson, Virginia. She had a daughter named Sophia Diggs, who married Washington Nicholas. Susan was a widow. The only name that I have for her husband is "Washington". I don't know if it's his first, or last name. These branches of the Diggs/Nicholas/Allen/Venable families, also lived in the same household as Nathaniel F. Cabell of Nelson County, Virginia.

Friend, I am looking for an unknown DIGGS who married into the JAMES RIVER set of HARRISONS. The date would have been about 1725 or earlier.

The family that I am looking for would have contained two brothers (at least)who were born c1755. JAMES & JOSEPH HARRISON

Sorry that I cannot help you with this same DIGGS Family

I suppose that you know that the JAMES RIVER DIGGS family is descended from a 'royal' family from England?

Gratefully

HFisher

I have been searching for my indian family for years now .
and this name you post as white is something I shoudl check into
so far the only possiblity I can see of any connection is your mary White and this name lizzy ... and those two names are pretty common so I dont'know but I shoudl probably ask., how far have you gotten on your grandma white front?
and what stories do you know of your cherokee grandma?
maybe I can help maybe not .. I am missing a Jane white she is most likely a elizabeth jane white born about the same time as the civil war. her mother was also a katherine . probably a mary katherine or margaret katherine and her mom was a elizabeth jane .

I'm not sure if I can help you. I was able to identify some of my family through the 1880 census. The James Diggs I'm referring to was born in 1876 in Elizabeth, City, VA, which I believe is now called Hampton, VA. I believe my ancestors were slaves, therefore it's hard tracing back before the 1880 census.

As you know some of the slaves acquired there masters last name, so there could be a connection. At this time I am focusing on trying to find cousins.

Jane,

I have not searched the name James Barnes Diggs for a number of years and I just saw this over a year after you posted it. Carole Dunn, who posted the original note did so after I'd made an inquiry to her about the same.

My info on the James Barnes Diggs who was my great great great grandfather is that he was born in Virginia around 1790, that he was at the Battle of New Orleans with Andrew Jackson in 1814 (War of 1812, per service records in the National Archives), lived in New Orleans for many years, married in Alabama in 1836, his wife died in 1839, he moved back to Louisiana, appears in a census there in 1850, and reportedly died in LA in 1855.

Interesting that the wife of my James Barnes Diggs gave birth to twin girls in 1839.

I once saw some work of a genealogist from the 1970s suggesting his parents were Thomas and Mary Diggs of VA. Don't know if any validity to that. Also, his descendants claimed that he was a descendant of Edward Diggs, a colonial governor of VA, circa 1650, but I have no proof of that.

The fact that your James Barnes relative was born in 1769 suggests that some sister or other relative of his married a Diggs and she wanted to name one of her sons after her brother or relative. Just a guess. Did your James Barnes have any sisters, if you know, and if so, do you know who they married?

There cannot be too many James Barnes Diggs from VA born around that time. Anything else you can surmise from your bible pages would be helpful to me and much appreciated. If you have the ability to scan the relevant pages, could you do so and email to me at markenr@aol.com?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Mark Enright
