Duke/Dukes, Dike/Dikes/Dykes

I am looking for any information on Joel Dike/Dikes/Duke/Dukes. He and his family are listed in the 1870 Shilo, Marengo County, AL Census. He was born in 1810 in GA. His wife's name is Gatsey. Children - Nancy, George, James, and Rebecca. There is a possibility that before 1870 he changed his surname from Duke/Dukes to Dike/Dikes. I found a marriage record in Lowndes County, AL which indicated that a Joel Duke and Gatsey Paine were married in 1835. My GGrandfather is George Dykes who married Mary Lou Tuttle. Appreciate any information that anyone will share.

Andy, thanks so much for this info. I have added it to my pc gen program and it will appear on my free family website www.RoutonandRiddle.org I used the info you gave me and was able to find census records for this family through 1880. I did not find Wm Hall, 1st husband of Carlantha but did not check MO as I did not know where they were living in 1880. I added your name as contributor and when I download a gedcom in a few days, it will show up on the RR website. Any info you'd like to see there, please let me know by leaving a message on the RR site.

Carlantha Sam(p)son was the daughter of William Sampson and Phebe Morris. Carlantha had a sister named Sevilla Viola Sampson who married to James Hobson Dewey Sample. Carlantha and Sevilla were two of many siblings including; David, Caroline, Willard, Olive, and Piercy L. Sam(p)son. The "P" carries and drops depending on what line you follow.

Sevilla Viola is my great great grandmother.

Carlantha's father William Sampson's father was Willard Fre(e)mont Sam(p)son who married Margaret Marr and Margaret Crandall. Marr died in 1828 in Canada.

Hi. My name is Sihon Sprouse and you and I have possibly stumbled upon the same grave site in my hometown of Liberty,TX. I remember the broken top portion of one of the graves; only I seem to remember Dolly Dikes as Tele Sprouse. This might be my unfortunate memory though. I am related to Ivan Daniel Sprouse(my grandfather) who I believe is Jenerals son: which I may have an old photo of somewhere. I am happy to hear of you fixing the grave. Please e-mail.

Actually I finally had to contact a family member who had the information and they pulled the pdf from the master file.

Jeneral & Dolly had 3 children as I understand it.

They were Deanie, Luvenia & William.

I am a great grandsom of Luvenia.

I have no information on Deanie or William at this time but the pdf provides all information on the descendants of Luvenia Sprouse.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

I am the great grand-daughter of Dolly and Jeneral Sprouse. This morning my brother, Gene Sprouse, took me to the grave site of Dolly and Jeneral in Liberty, Texas. The grave stone of Dolly Sprouse was broken but Gene actually had it and has had it for a very long time. He repaired the grave stone today so it is there now. We would love information on these relatives.

? Amy O'Donnell/Dikes/Banks 1864-1898-Mo., Ks., Ok. Ar.

I've run into a brick wall researching my grandmother, Amy(? )O'Donnell/ Dikes/Banks. She was married to a "O'Donnell in 1882 when my mother's half-brother, Charlie O'Donnell was born in Missouri. She was then married to a "Dikes" in 1889/1890 in Coffeeville, Ks.,when my mother's brother Artie Dikes was born. My mother Gertie Mae Dikes was born in Ar. in 1892.
I found these three children living with George Banks' family and listed as step-children in the 1900 census. I checked George Banks marriages and he married my grandmother (Amy Dikes) in 1896. George married again in 1898, so I guess my grandmother had passed away, although I can find no records.
Due to the problems with records that were burned in 1890 and not knowing my grandmother's maiden name, I would appreciate any information. Thanks, Harve
Re: Dykes/Dikes

I am SO sorry. For some reason when you wrote back to me two years ago it didn't send a reply to my email address. All this time and I haven't found anything new. I do have my great-grandma's obit now though and it does list Artemis Cheney as one of her brothers; and she had five. One of your questions was how I am in the family. I'm the g-grandaughter of Mary Jane Cheney Boozer. The grandaughter of her daughter Opal Boozer Kennedy and the daughter of Opal's daughter Virginia. The Cheney side is the second to least that I have info on. BUT until today I thought I only had my g-grandma's parents names and now I have her grandparents! If you want to email me directly; which is probably a good idea because I honestly can't count how many queries I have left on boards at rootsweb then the best place is to get me at my college address that I can check anywhere: ajt11945@student.astate.edu. Im out on Spring Break for the next week and I have a brand new subscription to ancestry.com to try out. Thank you for replying back to me with the info and again, I am really sorry that there wasn't a response until now.

I think that my grandma Cindy went to live with them after her parents died or she and Aunt Sarah were half-sisters. I have both of their death certicates. They both died in Ar. where I live. What relationship are you and where do you live? I'll tell you more as I get it. Sarah married John Cheney jr.My uncle.
