Classification: Query
Surnames: Dill, Neves, Mitchell
My husband is descended form those confusing SC Dills from Upper Greenville, SC. This is form Anah Dill who married George Mitchell. They had a daughter Anah Mitchell who married William "Billy" Neves and so on. Well, my husband has inherited 157 Civil War letters. These letters mention several Dills. They were written mostly to his great grandfather W. P. Z. F. Neves while he was serving with CO A and CO H of the Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery in Charleston, SC. I cannot definitely place any of these Dills. Anah Mitchell is still living at the time of the War. Her son and WPZF's father is Alsey A. Neves. Well, a frequent visitor during this time is an Alsey A. Dill. He even writes some very interesting letters. In one of the early letters from one of WPZF's sisters, she says they have not heard from Alsey Dill since he left. Then there is one that states that he does not have very many scholars, so he must have been a teacher. Alsey Dill appears in the 1850 Greenville CO census at the same # as Alsey Neves. I don't think he is in the 1860 census. The only clues that I have other than these is he mentions in one of the letters in the fall of 1863 that his brother,Stephen Dill, had come to visit him. (Alsey Dill is staying near the Alsey Neves at this time) . The other Dill names in the letters besides these are Andy who may have been killed recently,1865; B.C. and he appears to be in VA when he is not home on furlough; Benj.; C.; C. I.; C. P.; Carol/Carrol; E.; Elford; Rev. G.; George died before the end of 1861; Lieut.; Lieut. J. H. or J. A. and may be same as John below; Jack; Joe; John; Mama/Mother; Martha; Mr., Rev. T.; Seth; T/Thomas think same as Rev. T.; Tilda; and Uncle C. P.

I am trying to identify all the people in the letters before I share them...or as many as I possibly can. I think Alsey may die before the end of 1863. He does not seem to be very well in the last letters in which he is mentioned.

Any ideas and assistance would be greatly appreciated. I will plan to spend some time in Greenville, SC backing up the research and would be willing to keep my eyes open for any of your interests.
