Dave Dille/Dilley California via Michigan

Help with Dave Dille/Dilley Michigan-California

I am seeking help and/or information for a Dave Dille/Dilley, the husband/ father per the 1880 US Census, Soledad Township, Los Angeles County, California of:

Francisca Dille, widow, b. 1855
Eliza Dille, daughter b. 1872
Dave Dille, son b. 1874
May Dille, daughter. 1876
…, son, b. 1880 (eventually named of Francisco Garcia)

The census states the children’s father born in Michigan, later censuses consistent with Michigan.

Per Los Angeles County Deed records, Francisca Dilley acquired property Feb 1875 and Eliza J. Dille acquired property May 1876, on the same street, one block apart. The two properties are located 10 miles from the location of the 1880 census. I am supposing Eliza J. Dilley is Dave Dille/Dilley’s mother.

I have unconfirmed documentation of a George R. Dilley living 1876 in the Soledad Township, Los Angeles County.

Per 1880 US census, there is a James Dilley Living in Los Nietos, Los Angeles County California that might be a brother.

So far, I have failed to make a family connection between Eliza J. Dilley, George R. Dilley, James Dilley or David Dille. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you for posting,

Do you perchance have information on your forefather who came to CA.? WE have a great Uncle John Horace (Hod or Hoddy) who went west to the Gold field and was never heard from again. We have always wondered what happened to him. Did he make it to the Gold Field, if not, did he die along the way? Did he go to Nv., Ca, or Ak. etc? Did he marry and have a family? Did he just run away because of his step mother or did he leave just trying to prove himself up to the standards of his two older brothers? Oh so many questions we have pertaining to John Horace Dilley.

If any of you happen to have a John Horace in your family tree, would you please, OH! so very please, let us know. We will be moving but my e-mail will remain the same.

Beth abcfhist@hotmail.com

Happy Thanksgiving,

Tom,

I am now trying to find our Dilley - Mc Coy line in Augusta Co., Va. It appears that John, Richard and Joseph Dilly migrated to Faquier Co., Va. from somewhere else. I had received information that John Mc Coy migrated to Fauquier Co., VA. from Maryland but after searching various cos. there could not find anything. Then happened upon a lady who told me there were two different John Mc Coys in Fauquier Co. at the same time and that the John Mc Coy who was married to Rebecca Malone (various spellings) migrated from Augusta Co., Va. I had not knowningly been searching for our John and Rebecca records in records that were pertaining to John and Nancy Mc Coy. No wonder I could not find the data I was trying to find.

Perhaps you would help me search for our Mc Coy and perhaps Dilly line in Augusta Co. Now, there is another line of Dilley in Augusta Co., VA. Have been told that my Nephew is willing to have a DNA test done there in Salt Lake. Now I just need to wait and see what happens.

Beth.

abcfhist@hotmail.com

This may be crazy, but your story sounds slightly familiar. My grandfather was Guy Charles Dilley and was born in Kane PA. He was son to Charles Dilley and Minnie Jordan. He and Mary Bischaleny of Olean NY had my mother Joyce Marie in 1939. Please write back and let me know if this picks up where yours leaves off :)

Please write at mojo88@rochester.rr.com with links to pics and such. I am so excited to pick up this thread! I was at a loss for where to look next for my grandmother Minnie B. Jordan. Do you know any of the story of Minnie and my grandfather Charles Guy? How are you related? Thanks so much for responding!
Mari Hill

Strange names. Please let me know if you have a family tree of sorts that I can look at. Maybe we can piece more together.

Hi Jill,

Yes, I'm still perusing these message boards in my quest for Dilleys! George Dilley is the only brother I know of belonging to this set of siblings. I think he was born in 1901 (or there abouts). I *might* have a marriage certificate for him somewhere. I'll have to dig through my research. I'm sure there were other male Dilleys born to this particular Islington family after 1901, I just don't know of them yet. I would be keen to hear about any extra siblings that you think belong to this family...

Best,
Hannah

I don't really have a family tree for Charles to speak of... I haven't gotten that far yet since he's my step-great-grandfather. We had him pegged for a while as the most likely candidate for my grandfather's real dad, but my grandfather was very blonde and looks Swedish so we've pretty much ruled Charles out.

I put the sources that I do have online so that you can see them easier and I don't have to try and attach it all to one email. Go here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcarleton/...

That page links to a page from a deed that his widow Clella filled out after he died. I remember doing the research in the courthouse and it was Charles's parents' property before it went to Charles. My grandmother said the address was 5 Pine Street in Kane, and that comports with the addresses on the censuses. Clella lived there for a while after Charles died.

The page also links to a picture of his tombstone we took a few years ago at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Kane. We literally took pictures of every Dilley we could find in the entire cemetery and there was no Minnie Dilley, so I don't know what happened to her. Charles and Clella are buried next to Clella's daughter Doris and Doris's husband, Rod Johnson.

The page also links to a picture of him and his step-daughter, Clella's daughter Doris. It's the only picture I have, and it's old and tiny so that's the best scan I could get of it. If you have a better picture, I would love to see it! I have a whole box of photographs that I've inherited, but many of them aren't labelled (of course) and my grandmother (the person who is identifying all the people for me) didn't know Charles that well so we're not sure if I have any pictures of him at a younger age.

Yes, it's definitely a match! I've done more research on Charles Dilley (b. Aug 8, 1880, d. 1958) since I first posted. I had him down as having a first wife, Minnie, and two kids, Charles G. Dilley (probably your grandfather), born about Feb. 1909, and Clarence Alford Dilley, born April 28, 1905 and probably dying very young.

I never thought I'd find a descendant from Charles! Charles's first family seemed to disappear off the radar, and his second wife, Clella (my great-grandmother) inherited his family property, so I wasn't sure what had happened. Did Minnie die young? Did they get a divorce?

Like I said, I'm descended from Clella (Meals) Dilley, Charles's second wife. When Clella was younger, she had a daughter out of wedlock (Doris Meals, whom she kept) and then a son out of wedlock (my grandfather) who was adopted into a Swedish family in Kanesholm. We've always thought Charles Dilley was an interesting character for marrying a woman with two illegitimate kids. Do you know any of the back story?

I've done some research on Charles's parents and I'm pretty sure I've figured out how he connects with the rest of the Dilleys in McKean County. Let me know if I can help.

It's so good to hear from you!!

I have a few more photos of Mary and her husband James but nothing else on Mary's family other than a photo containing two of her brothers.

Can anyone help or lead me in a direction that would be helpful in locating Dilly/Dilley photos?

Would love to be in contact with members of this Dilly family or others researching.

Attached photo is James Henry & Mary Madora (Dilly) Smith.

Any help is appreciated.

Crystal
in Ohio

Hannah,

I realise these posts were a while ago now but am hoping you still use these boards. Do you know if there were any male Dilleys born to this family sometime between 190 and 1905 and what became of them if there were

Jill

Hi Hannah,

we've been trying to track down a Sidney Dilley who may be my husband's grandfather for a couple of years now.

We have very little information about him. He may have been born in 1903 or 1905. There is family rumour that he had a brother or a half-brother. We know that Sid was certainly living in Islington when he married my husband's great-aunt in 1935. We have no idea which location he came from. He died in 1946 in Hornsey, North London. We also know he was a bigamist and may not have been offically called Sidney.

We are hoping he was actually born in Islington as there were an awful lot if Dilley's in the area.

Which one of my Uncle Orval's children is your husband's parent? I live in Elgin, Illinois, may I ask where you and your husband reside. I have some information and copies of the family tree that Orval worked putting together most of his life. There is also a book called "Historical Sketches of Pocahontas WV" That will have a great amount of information in it. If you would like you can call me at 847-931-4045. I look forward to hearing from you.
