Dilly or Dilley. Use to be a policeman near Williamson during the 1920's or 1930's.

Just because I'm curious, I was looking for information on the couple that my grandmother stayed with. My grandmother was Alice Luellen Cox Foster. She was born in 1919 and passed away last month. She was originally from Cabin Creek, Kanawha County. During 1931-1932, she stayed with the Dilly family near Williamson. While there, she cleaned house, etc. She finished 7th grade there. She stayed until her mother, Hattie Basham Cox, became ill. That June, Hattie passed away and my grandmother left the Dillys for good to take care of her father and siblings.
I remember her saying that the husband was either a policeman or a deputy. She always talked about how kind they were to her. Does anything ring a bell? Please email me back at Kacihelene@aol.com if you have any additional information.
Thanks,
Kaci Foster Veazey

Clarifying the Wolfstein-Sparbruechen Dillys

Two large families named Dilly came the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century. One descended from Jacob Dilly moved to Newark, New Jersey while the other descended from Johann Jacob Dilly moved to Ridout, Illinois. The Newark Dillys were Lutheran/German Presbyterians while the Illinois Dillys were Catholics. Both families came from Wolfstein Stadt in the Pfalz region of Germany. They were related and can be traced to around 1700. The following summarizes the two Dilly families and is based on research by others.

The earliest member of family for which I have records was Johann Petrus Dilly, apparently of Sparbruechen who was speculatively born in the Sparbruechen area of Rhineland-Pfalz, the town in which he died.

Johann Petrus was the father of Christian Dilly of Sparbruechen who died 9 February 1792 in Sparbruechen. Christian married Maria Salome Paul and had alt least three children, Johannes, Nikolaus, and Johann Jacob.

Johannes Dilly was born 16 October 1767 in Sparbruechen and died in 2 June 1806 in Wolfstein. In 9 August 1796 he married Dorothea Braun (Braunin) in Wolfstein. They had several children who included the Jacob Dilly who moved to Newark with his children.

Johann Jacob Dilly, the son of Christian Dilly was born in Sparbruechen in 9 June 1770 and died in Wolfstein on 30 March 1812. He married Christine Catharine Dech on 15 April 1803 in Wolfstein.

Johann Jacob and Christine had several children including Johan Jacob who was born 2 October 1810 in Wolfstein. He was the founder of the Ridout, Illinois Dillys.

Does anyone have anything to add to this?

I'm looking for info on my great great grandfather Arthur Monroe Dilley.I have posted on the Dilley board with only limited results, then I realized that Arthur spelled his name Dilly on the 1840 Ohio and 1850 Indiana census so I decided to give the Dilly board a shot.He was born 12-27-1814 in either Ohio or Pennsylvania and died abt 1884 in Indiana. He married Elizabeth McInturf on Dec. 27,1835 in Ohio and had nine children including my great grandfather Oliver Constance Dilley.I'm trying to find info on his parents and possibly his origin.Anyone having any idea about this please contact me.I noticed that some people leave their e-mail address here so I thought I might add that if you click on the authors name all that he has written and his or hers e-mail address will show.

Hello, One of my grandfathers was Isaac Martin Murphy, born in VA, 4 Dec 1808. He married Mary Evans in Rush Co., IN on 12 Jul 1832. His children were: Rachel Ann, Sarah Elizabeth, Margaret Marion, William Fletcher,Charles Evans, James Martin, Wesley Madison, Mary Delila Jane, and Nancy Elvirah. Since some of your names are the same as mine thought I'd see if you though your William and my Isaac are related. Irene Kleiber

Dilley/Dilly spelling

I'm a descendant of Deriah Dilley (whose name may really have been Daniel and got mispelled....it also shows up as Derial and Dariel!) He was born in PA in 1797 but we're not sure of his parentage....could have come from Caleb, as they had a Daniel the right age who went to CA and was never heard from again. Ours did that, but ended up living in CA for some years thereafter, then sort of disappears.
His daughter Sarah Ann, born in Ohio in 1825, married Asabel/Asahel/Asael Bennett (more different spellings on documents) and her name is minus the "e" on the marriage record.
I think it all depended on how the clerk of the town "heard" it, as a lot of people were uneducated and possibly didn't really know how to spell their names. Also there were no doubt a lot of different accents which could confuse the clerk somewhat!

Dilly, Wolfstein

There has been some discussion of this on www.genforum.genealogy.com/dilly. There seems to be a reason to believe that these Dillys are connected. My line is Katarina Saling and Jacob Dilly as well. There is an interesting problem in that the original Dillys were Catholic but Jacob Dilly was (eventually) Lutheran. There is also a Dilly in the early 1840s in Deer Park Township, Orange County, New York who seems to be related. My line inherited land there though tradition does not link it to the Dilly who occupied it earlier.
