I'm interested in finding out more about the York Farm Cemetery. My husbands Ggrandfather, Alonzo C Smith (L C Smith), is buried there. He married Judge York and Augusta's daughter Kate. Kate's daughter, Pluma Campbell, from her first marriage to Dr. W.A. Campbell is also buried there. Is this a cemetery that can be visited by the general public?
I think I can shed some light on your family for you. Your great-grandmother had 3 sisters. Hope was one, she married Lon Wellman. Anna Lida married Bill Call and the third sister Mary had was Georgia. Georgia was my great great grandmother, and she married Frank J. Forsyth, Sr.
Anna, Georgia, Mary and Hope were the daughters of John Atwood Dils, who married Anna Williamson. John Atwood was the only son of Col. John Dils Jr. of Pikeville, who was married to Ann Ratliff.

Dear Jean,
This is so exciting. I have researching this family for a long time.

Ok I didn't know that Sarah Abbott Washburn had gone to visit her family in Oregon. Would love a photo of her. Her husband died in 1908. Is that when she visited Oregon. Because they probably brought their son Alfred at that time and that is where he met Edith.

Thank you for the Obituary on Curtis. For some reason, I have Curtis's middle name as Godfrey, I will have to check this out.
The obit for Kate Abbott does appear to be our Catherine. I had a researcher find that obit for me.
Catherine and Curtis married in Miami, Ohio in 1847. I have on online Marriage index for Miami, Ohio Marriages and a very poor Marriage record.

I have the following census records for Curtis and Catherine and children. If you want them I can email or send them to you.

1850 Curtis and Catherine lived together with Eliza and Joel in Penn, St. Joseph, Indiana
1860 Catherine lived with Eliza, Joel C., Sarah, James P., and Mary C. in Penn, St. Joseph, Indiana
1860 Curtis is living in Tiah, Wasco, Oregon
1870 Catherine lived with Eliza, J., Mary, and james in Penn, St. Joseph, Indiana
1870 Curtis is living alone East of Dechutes River, Wasco, Oregon
1880 Catherine lived with Eliza Jane and Mary C. in Osceola, St. Joseph, Indiana
1880 G. Curtis Abbott is living with Joel and James in Oak Grove, Wasco, Oregon
1900 Curtis is living with his daughter Eliza and her husband Benjamin Foreman and grandson William Foreman

1857 Story of Curtis going to Humbold County, CA, then he must have went back to Indiana, as the next child born to him Mary in 1858.

According to an unsigned note provided to me by another cousin;
Joseph (Joel) returned to Elkhart, Indiana to escort his mother Catherine, and sisters, Eliza and Mary back to the Dalles, Oregon via an Imigrant train arriving April, 1884. Joseph had gone to the Dalles in 1883.

1894 Catherine dies and is buried in Kelly Cemetery. No death certificate yet.
1901 Curtis dies and is buried next to Catherine at the Kelly Cemetery. No death certificate.

More to follow later.
Your cousin Barb
I have read The Dalles Chronicle from the first newspaper on out :) would not want anyone else to do that.

C J Abbott died at the home of his daughter and son-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Foreman, at Wapinitis, Last Sunday night, at the age of 76. Mr Abbott was born in Maine county, Ohio, and at an early day he crossed the plains to California. Coming from there to Oregon he settled at Wapinitia, where he has resided ever since. He was a kind hearted man, a good citizen and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends, which extended to all parts of the county. The Deceased leaves three daughters and two sons - J. P. and J.C. Abbott, Mrs B.S. Foreman and Mrs Samuel Brown, who all reside at Wapinitia and were at his bedside at the time of his death, and Mrs C. J. Washburn, of Ohio - Dufur Dispatch.

So I assume this was original in the Dufur, Oregon Paper - Many of these papers not on file. I have a Date form The Dalles Chronicle of 7/10/1901. Why so much later? could be I couldn't read date on newspaper well? Maybe it was a two and not a 7. any way his death date 1/29/1901 This would also tell us that Catherine is already deceased. (sometimes I assume to much :) The following article also from The Dalles Chronicle dated 9/12/1884

DIED

At Wapinitia, Sept 10th 1864, Mrs Kate Abbott,
age 69 years.

I have added this article to the family history but have no prouf this is our Catherine - but most likely is. In the old papers it speaks of George Abbott winning many ribbons for his cattle in the fairs. It also mentions that George was picked up off the street and sent to the insane assylum in Salem (very bad place to be). Now days they would probably call it dementia. It even mentions that his daughter picked him up from there and was going to take care of him at home in his old age.

The Only thing I have on Catherines Family is Father was born in Maima county, Ohio and mother born in Virginia. Family says George and Cathrine moved to Indiana, Joseph county in 1848 - Humbolt county, Calif. in 1857, then on to Wasco county, Oregon in 1881.

I do have a question that maybe you can answer: Sarah had came out to Oregon to visit (papers didn't always get stories right) something bad had happened to her husband and he had died - she had left here in a hurry but had left Edith Washburn here. I don't have any of this story right in front of me at this moment but do have a pic somewhere with Edith still residing at her Uncles James house. Where is Edith now? Will have to dig pics out. I should have one of Catherine Dil and some of all the children - all for now jean

It is great to hear from a cousin. I am a descendant of Curtis's daughter Sarah Arsina Abbott who married Cassius Washburn.

Would love to know what you have in the family history books about Curtis Abbott and Catherine Dils/Dilts. Thanks for the death date, we had not been able to get a death cerificate for Curtis or Catherine. I found Curtis living with his daughter Eliza in 1900 but never found when and with whom Catherine moved in with when she arrived in Oregon.

Please contact me by email andertow@pacbell.net

Barb in CA

Does anyone have a Libby Dils in there family? Libby sent a postcard to her cousin Eliza Jane Abbott in Oregon.

Does anyone have any knowledge of my grandparents, Catherine Dils who married Curtis Abbott in Miami County, Ohio, they had one child Eliza Jane in Ohio then moved to Indiana where they had Joel, James, Sarah and Mary. All of the children of this family except Sarah eventually moved to Oregon.

Catherine Dils/Dills/Dilts Abbott is found living next door to a William Dills family in Indiana. They both (William and Catherine) were born in Ohio and moved to Indiana. I thought they may be brother and sister.

Any information would be appreciated. I have the original postcard written by Libby Dils
Barbara A in Sacramento, CA

yes, John Dils Jr. is the one. My great-great-great grandfather,
William Dils, was a houseboy for the Dils family.
Wm. married Mary Slone in the Dils home in 1875. Mary had 3 sons prior to her marriage of Wm. Mary was black/mulatto & her sons were from white men, all different fathers. The boys took the Dils name after Wm.& Mary married. The sons were Harvey, Joseph & Cluke/Clark. Harvey was my great, great grandfather. He married Sarah Stidham & they had 3 children, John, Harrison & Lora. Lora was my grandmother.
If you have any info to share with me, I will share all that I have
.Thanks for answering my email.
Lora

Joanne,
Sure glad to hear from you although we are not related.
I believe my Dils were servants to the John Dils Jr. family.
Perhaps your family in Pikeville, KY, could find me some info on Joe Dills. He was still alive in 1920. He & his wife Martha had a shoe repair store in Pikeville. He is the only Dills that I don't have a death record of. I would love to know who his father was as the other 2 brothers had different fathers. As I said their Mother was black/mulatto but the boys fathers were white as back then the white man could do what he wanted with a black woman.
How do you like Germany? My husbands father immigrated to America from Germany.
Keep in touch.
Lora

My side of the Dilts family from NJ did come into Muskingum Co and I know there were Dilts in Perry County too.
Zanesville, White Cottage and Fultonham are a few of the towns that are in Muskingum County. Peter Dilts born 1769 and died 1948 in Muskingum County. I have one of his wives as Elizabeth Matthews but am sure he had others. He had
children John, Sarah, George, Rachel, Henry, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Daniel and Peter, and Katherine. Seems in Muskingum Co. during early 1830's there were several Peters. There is probably a connection. Its worth keeping in mind anyway.

My cousin is in possession of a Dils family bible that lists a Henry Dils as born on Feb 16, 1763 (close, but not an exact match to yours) in NJ. He married Hannah (possibly Hannah Young) on June 27, 1790. Hannah was born Mar 8, 1766. According to the bible, they had a son named Peter Dils, born Nov 3, 1791 and a son William Dils (b Jan 19 1800). I have their marriage info but no death dates.

Do you think we're talking about the same family?
Thanks for any info.

Kim Cromwell

My ancestry goes back to Anne Ratliff also. I think we are talking about the same family. Mary E. Dils was my great grandmother and she had 3 or 4 sisters. Hope was one and Annalida was another.
Joanna

I have just today started researching my ancestry and noticed your message. I am related to John Dils of Pikeville Ky. Mary E. Dils was my great grandmother and he must have been her father. I know nothing else about him

My 3rd great grandmother was Nancy Dils whose
parents were William Dils and Mary. William's
Great Grandfather was Johann Wilhelm Dils who
came from Germany. If you can tie into this
family please let me know. Nancy's husband
was Edmund Hodges. Thank you for anything you
may have. I have more.
