I'm so excited, I think I've made another break through, this time concerning the DIMMETTE spelling.
I went playing in census records and typed in Dimmette in North Carolina. The earliest the spelling Dimmette shows up in North Carolina is the 1900 census. I came up with three guys (among others), John W., Joel & James F. Dimmette. These guys were all a year or two apart in age and living close to each other. I thought maybe they were brothers. On one census, a guy's 83 year old father was listed in the home, his name was Joel. This sounded extremely familiar to me...a man named Joel with three boys John, Joel & James. I went to my tree and found a Joel DIMMITT, he had three sons- John, Joel & James. My tree stopped cold with these three guys, no spouses or children. I went to work building a Dimmette tree from census records and here's what I came up with:
