My Great Great Grandfather was John J. Dineen, was married to Julia A. Corkery. Julia was born about 1822 in the UK but I don't know much about John. I know his son James F. Dineen was born in August 1955 in Canada, Married Margaret L. Hughes on 11 Nov 1861 in Massachusetts. Margaret Hughes was born 5 Nov 1862 and died 23 Oct 1902 of the "flu" that was rampant during that time. James F Dineen died on 18 Jan 1914. They were the parents of my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Dineen, born 8 Aug 1882 in Massachusetts, Died 5 Aug 1953. Don't know if anyone has any further information on this Dineen family, or if this helps anyone else out.

Thank you, Geri! The middle one is definitely my family. My great grandfather, John Joseph White, died of rabies at around 45 according to family lore. Margaret Dineen White was his wife, and my great grandmother. She was the only child born to Honora Dineen, according to one question on the census. You gave me several important pieces of info I did not know! I did not know the date of his death from rabies, but had guessed it was between 1900-1910. I did not know their address, or where he had been born in RI. The best piece of information was the name of Mary Fontneau, my great-great grandmother! I did not have her first or last name. She was never mentioned to my mother at all, leading us to think she might have been an Indian or First Nation member (from Canada), especially since my mother looked very much like that, with black hair, eyes, and high cheekbones. She was at least part French, from her name. Thank you so much! I am still looking for Honora Dineen's maiden name, or her husband's first name, or both....

Hello there,
My name is Yvonne Powers. I am a Dineen and would love to find that side of my family. My grandfathers name was william and he married Alice Rita Doyle. They had William jr., Virginia and Jimmy, (jimmy was malformed and institutionalized). My mom, Virginia, passed away last october and I'd really like to find her fathers side of the family to connect with. Now William sr., my grandfather, was said to have been a drinker, truck driver and may have died due to hitting his head, maybe in a bar. I know he had a brother George. I have found the 1930's census record and see the names for tom and marys children: margaret, william, nellie, francis, and george. I know that my grandfather had a brother george and some sisters, but I don't know any. I'm just finding out who's who on my moms side. I didn't grow up with her, rather a step family and I'm trying to find my blood roots. If any of these names connect with you, will you please let me know? I'm using my cousins info on here so please email me at my addy: poohter@aol.com

Maurice Dineen married Catherine Walsh Dineen in Ireland and they came to the US approximately 1864 settling in Ohio. I'm told they may have been from Cork County? in Ireland. Maurice died in 1905, Catherine in 1918. I'm searching for information on who their parents were and when they were married. They were my great-grandparents. I have not been able to get past this information. I do no have any idea what their middle names may have been. Any information on either of these names would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my Dineens were supposed to be from near there in County Kerry, I think. My mother mentioned the town name of Tralee. One of my ancestors was an Honora Dineen, and she immigrated to the US, and in 1860 had a daughter, Margaret, in Oswego, NY. I do not know who her father was, but Honora migrated in about 1853, and I am uncertain if she was married to a Dineen in Ireland or married one here, but putting that together with my mother's town info, perhaps they were married in Ireland. I do not know Honora's maiden name, and Margaret was an only child. Any of this sound familiar...???? Margaret lived later in Mass. and married a Canadian Frenchman, last name of White.

Mary Kelley

Hi,

In answering your message sent about Michael and Honora Dineen, and their daughter Margaret (1862), my ancestor Margaret (L. if think was her middle initial), was born about 1860, but was yours born in Oswego, N.Y.?
The port of entry really had nothing to do with where they ended up. The port of entry depended on which steamship company was selling tickets near the immigrants place of origin.

Baltimore was another port of entry on the east coast as well as Canadian ports. Gulf ports were Galveston TX, New Orleans LA, as well as San Francisco and Seatle on the west coast. And on some occasions immigrants crossed the border with Mexico, having originally gone to places such as Argentina.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

If your running up against a brick wall searching in NY, maybe you should look into ports of Boston and other like Phil. Pa, which really aren't all that far from NY, and they could have traveled to NY by train after arriving.

Just an idea. Because I ran into that situation awhile ago, only I thought mine had come into Boston(as thats where they wound up) but they went through Ellis Island.

Good Luck
Barbara

Info needed on John DINEEN in Suffield, Hartford, CT

Looking for information on the DINEEN family located in and around Enfield/Suffield, Hartford, CT.

Appearing in the 1870 census in Enfield, Hartford, CT are:

DENIN, Julia 62
, John 40
, James 30
, Abby 26

I can account for the eventual whereabouts for all but John (although any additional information would be welcome!). I am trying to ascertain the lineage of the John that appears in this census. The James and Abby listed are the children of Julia (and her husband James, deceased), but I can’t verify the same for John nor track him definitively from this census forward.

I keep getting this John confused with a John DENEEN (DINEEN) that appears in this same general area (Suffield, Hartford, CT) beginning in the 1880 census, along with wife Mary and children Jerry, Mary Ann, Julia and John. However I can’t get the ages to match up. This John is listed as age 48 in the 1880 census, age 52 (b. Dec. 1847) in the 1900 census and 65 in the 1910 census.

I am trying to verify/disprove if the John listed in the 1870 census in the household of Julia is, in fact, her son. Also to verify/disprove if the John DINEEN listed repeatedly in the Suffield census over the years 1880-1910 is this same individual – the son of Julia Casey DINEEN and James DINEEN (deceased prior to 1870).

Any and all help/suggestions would be very much appreciated!
Greg, we are probably talking about the same extended family. The townland of Coolavehy, where I found an Ellen Dineen, at the time of the 1911 Census is in the RC parish of Glenroe and Ballyorgan. These were separate parishes that were combined at some point in time. I am sure that your "Glenrow" is Glenroe. The civil parish for this area is Kilflyn. In 1911, Ellen was a widow with children Maurice Dineen, age 19. Mary Ellen was 15 and John 12. I kept putting in names on a genealogy site and discovered the husband's name was Denis. I can't tell what Ellen's maiden name was without sending for a record. I would guess that this might have been a Dineen family that did not emigrate. I wonder if anyone from that family is still in the area. Jan

I now have some further information - seeking information on the family of Michael DINEEN and Honora MADDEN of Ireland. I think they were from Limerick, Ireland. Honora Madden appears in 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records but as wife of Patrick Boyle so Michael Dineen must have died before 1861. They had at least two daughter, Mary and Johanna who married brothers in the Coady Family in Toronto in the early 1860s. Family was here by 1861 as they appear in 1861 Ontario census. 1852 census for Toronto is lost.

Would love to find out more information on this family.

Michael

Lisa,

You are correct. Mary Dineen is the daugther of Patrick Dineen (born around 1892 in County Cork, Irenland) and Mary (Minnie) Killoran born around 1896 in County Sligo. Minnie's sister Lizzie married Patrick's brother Jack, and they are my father's parents, so Mary is my father's first cousin on both sides. How much more info would you like on Mary Kelly? I am in touch with her daughter now, and would be happy to find more out from her.

Danette
