The citation I have for the birth information is:

Johnson, Edward. Vital Records of Hallowell, Maine to the Year 1892. Auburn, ME: Published under the authority of the Maine Historical Society. 1924. Page 86. Digitized image of original publication in NewEnglandAncestors.org database. New England Historic Genealogical Society. 2010.

The information in this source says:

"DINGLEY, Charles S., ch. Robert and Anna (Leeman), Nov. 12, 1860"

Since this is a transcription of the original record, the initial "S" could possibly be an incorrect interpretation of the original cursive.

I found a Maine census enumeration for a household headed by a man recorded as Charles W. Dingley (spouse recorded as Mary J. Dingley) - I wonder if that's your grandfather's household.
