Elizabeth Dirks, m. George Hamilton

I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Dirks (m. George Hamilton), mother of my gg-grandfather John Hamilton. Everything I know about her is from a birth/baptism record for John, and then a family story.

John was born 1 Apr 1839 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA, and was baptized 14 Apr 1839 in St. Philomena Catholic Church in Pittsburgh (a German Catholic church). The baptism record lists John's parents as Georgii Hamilton and Elizabethae Dirkes. No other information is listed about them.

The family story is that George died when John was about 18 months old, and Elizabeth rode on horseback with John to Illinois. She remarried (whether in PA or IL we don't know) and, according to the story, died when John was around 5 years old. Also, according to story, he left St. Clair Co., IL because he couldn't stand his stepfather and moved to Clinton Co., IL, where he eventually married and had his own children (he later moved to Missouri and died in Carthage, MO in 1922). I haven't been able to locate any marriage records in IL for an Elizabeth Hamilton that might be John's mother.

If anyone has a match for this Elizabeth Dirks in their database I'd love to hear from you! It took 25+ years to find the names of John Hamilton's parents, and now I'm trying to take his line back a little further. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Dirks in Manitoba originally from Molochna

We live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. My father is Walter Dirks. His parents were Abram and Anna Dirks who came to Canada in 1926. I believe that they came from Molochna in Russia. They came along with my aunt Frieda (3 months old at the time)and with my great grandparents, David and Ekaterine (?) Dirks. Can anyone tell me where they would have travelled from or provide any further information?

Johann DIRKS

Guten abend to all of you Dirks relatives. We must be cousins somewhere down the line. My Johann DIRKS married HIlka Maria Remmers and is part of the group that Ostfriesland, settling first in Illinois and then in Nemaha County, Neb. My mom searched for her roots for years, but I found most of them in Nemaha. Her grandma "annie" Yelkin married Joseph Marriott and they lived in Lemoore, Calif. Anne Catherine Yelkin's parents were Anne Catherine Dirks (Dierks in some records) and John Johnson Yelkin, Jr. Anne Catherine Dirks was the daughter of Johann and Hilka. I have the Remmers book which includes a map of the area that the families were from and some info on both of these families - the majority being on the Remmer side of the family. Most of my "cousins" live in the Fresno area of California and I currently correspond with four of them who are also doing research. I will happily share photos and research. Contact me at Maestrowz@aol.com. Donnell

Dirks then Ernst from Texas

Does anyone here have any info on Christian Frierich Dirks born 1796 to Meine and Sybille (Grimms) Dirks in Lower Saxony? He then changed his name to Johann Friedrich Ernst around 1800 following the death of his father. In 1829 he arrived in New York with wife Louise Gesine Auguste Weber, then moved to Texas and recieved a land grant from Stephen F. Austin. Possibly one of the "Old 300" Ernst settled Texas in 1831, and was most likely the first German family to arrive in Texas. I'm looking for names of children and grandchildren. Thanks!
Tim Jackson
E-mail walldoxie2@cs.com
