Thanks for all the info. I've decided the Deborah Dix from Watertown was Edward's daughter who went on to marry Richard Barnes. I've been using Families of Ancient Wethersfield by Henry R. Stiles, published 1904, in the Card Catolog on Ancestry. He cites Hartford County Probate records, church records for baptisms and some land records and town records which say someone was a constable, road surveyor, etc. Unfortunately, I can't do the direct work (looking for original records) myself since I just have too many lines now. So I'm relying on others' Histories and checking records where I can. Unfortunately, Stiles' history stops at my third great grandfather.

Again thank you for the perspective,

Sue P.

Re: Wethersfield, Connecticut Dix removed to New York early 1800's

I do have some information on part of the Dix family of Wethersfeild, CT. If you would contact me directly, I would be very happy to pass it along. I was back there last summer and did some genealogy work at the local library. I have Hannah Dix wife of John Reynolds, Jr. who is a direct ancestor of mine. I have been to our library and reviewed all the published data on Leonard Dix and Deborah Dix; Watertown, MA Vital Records; Torries early marriages; histories of Watertown MA; Wethersfield, Brandford, New Haven and Windsor CT.

The only record of a Deborah Dix was the notation of her birth 7/20/1680, d/o John and Elizabeth Dix; There is no other record of her anywhere else. This Deborah is too young to be the mother of Leonard Dix.

But she may be the Deborah Dix who married Richard Barnes in Marlborough, MA. NO: DEBORAH DICKS MARRIED RICHARD BARNES 12/16/1667, 12 YEARS BEFORE THE BIRTH OF THE ABOVE DEBORAH.

The only Dixs in the proprietor land records in early Watertown, MA are that of Edward Dix and Joseph Dix.

In 1633, the 'Griffin' left England for Massachusetts Bay Colony. Among those on board were 3 emminant ministers: Mr Cotton (who remained in Boston); and Misters Hooker and Stone. Mr Hooker was a pastor, ordained for a congregation at Newtowne (Watertown, MA), that came over with him from the area of Earl's Colne in Essex, England (neighboring Wethersfeild).

Abt 1635, Mister Stone accompanied Mister Hooker and members of his congregation for the Connecticut River area. The group moved to CT along with land agents from Cambridge, MA, who had already scoped out the area.

Before them, in 1634, John Oldham led some of the impatient inhabitants of Watertown, MA overland and began a settlement at (1636 Watertowne Ct -> 1638 Wethersfeild, so named by the General Court at Hartford.")

Leonard Dix may well have gone to CT in any of these groups or immigrated directly there from England, if he was not Dutch. Land records indicate he was there by 1645.

I found no birth or marriage record for him, nor records of the births / baptisms of his children. Some of the early church records were lost or never existed. NOR have I found the name Leonard in any of the records of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Netherlands. Leonard does not appear to be a Dutch name.

I know not where the identity of Leonard's children was obtained, although it may have been from his will probated in Hartford, Ct.

Since the earliest publications, there is still no definative proof of the pedigree of Leonard Dix of Wethersfield, CT. All I can say with any certainty is:
He is not the son of Edward Dix of Watertown, as Edward's children's births /baptisms are on record.
The Deborah Dix of Watertown is not his mother.
He married Sarah.
Ultimately lived in Weathersfield, CT where he later died. Baptisms are from records of the Reverend Stephen Mix

Looking for George Dix, b.1783, was married, had at least one son, then "removed to Parma, New York" according to one history. Wife possibly Olive Hubbard. They were in Augusta, Oneida, N.Y. in the 1840 census. I can't find their marriage, Olive's death, their son George H. Dix's birth in Wethersfield, marriage to Susan M. unknown in New York or the birth of George H.'s first son, Irvin in about 1841 in N.Y. I pick them up again in Wisconsin in 1850 with George Dix living with George H. and his family without his wife (I assume she died in N.Y.). In 1860 the George H. family is in Illinois and George Dix is no longer with them.

I would really appreciate any info anyone might have on this period of my Wethersfield Dix family. By the way George H. Dix is my great great grandfather.

Thanks in advance,

Sue P.

Trying to trace my third great grandfather from Wethersfield where I think he married ?Olive Hubbard, had his son George H., and then moved to New York. Can't find George H.'s marriage in New York to Susan M. unknown. I find them again in the 1850 census living in Theresa, Dodge, Wisconsin and George living with George H.'s family without his wife. Would love any info on either man's marriage and any info on their lives in New York (Oneida County I think) and info on George's and his wife's deaths. If I really get lucky maybe someone will even know the maiden name of my great great grandmother, Susan M. Thanks very much for any help. Sue P.

I haven't found his death or anything about the period when George H. was born in Connecticut and then they all moved to New York and George H. eventually married Susan M. ?. They moved to Wisconsin and had my great grandmother Cornelia Dix (a very strong woman) and her siblings. I would appreciate any info you could give to fill in the blanks!
Re: William Dix (1819 -1900) from Wells in Somerset

Hello Peter(?),

I'm a direct descendant of William Dix and Jane Brinkworth; their son, William (b.1859) is my gg-grandfather. I'm afraid that I've not been able to reach any further back than you have on this line. I have had a little luck with the Brinkworths, although I'm sure you have the same information. I have all of Jane's siblings, and her parents, Isaac Brinkworth and Sarah (nee Bath). Isaac's parents are difficult to confirm, but I know that he had a brother, Aaron, who married a Mary Orchard. All of this information I will pass onto you later, if you like.

Last summer, after ordering WIlliam Dix's 1859 birth certificate, and confirming Brinkworth as his mother's maiden name, I obtained the Bristol/1853 marriage certificate. I agree that the older William's father's name must be Thomas. One possible couple who might match as parents are Thomas and Anne Dix, both elderly servants (in their 60s) living near in or near Wells, Somerset in 1841 or 1851. This is from memory ---at the moment I'm away from home (where my family tree files are), but will provide more information when I get back.

Do you know the fate of the family after Bristol? William and Jane's first child, Sarah A. was born in Bristol, and then the family moved to a place called Hopesay, Shropshire (specifically, to a cluster of cottages called The Fish --named for an old Tavern on the site). This is where Thomas and WIlliam were born. Later, the family moved to Wistanstow, Shropshire, where Mary and George were born. I have exact dates of birth for most of these children, and will provide it soon. Is it you or your wife who is descended from one of these children?

My gg-grandfather, William Dix, left Shropshire sometime after 1891, and went to south Wales to work as a plate layer on the railroad. He married Mary Davies in 1895, and they had three children, including my g-grandmother, Margaret (nee Dix). Margaret's daughter, Mary, now 80 years, is my grandmother. Our family lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, but my wife and I have lived in Oxford, UK for 2 years (and will for 2-3 more) for study.

I'd appreciate learning more about your findings, or about your/your wife's connection to the Dix family. I'd like to add the information to my tree. I'm just as interested in the branching of descendants as I am in the ancestral roots. Please contact me directly if you like, nathan_flis@hotmail.com.

Best wishes,
Nathan

I am descended from Jonathan & Mary Williams Dix. They were my GGGrandparents. I have believed for several years that Jonathan's father was David & Levi was Jonathan's brother, but have been unable to confirm it. Do you have any info on the Dix family?? Would love to hear from you & perhaps we can trade info! How do you connect? Looking forward to hearing from you soon!!

Hi
I have contacted many of you but I thought that I had better put something on the message board.
I'm Gren Dix in the UK (in rural Cheshire. Out common ancestor appears to be James DIX (b 1779. I have forwarded to Janine what info I have about the dix line in Geddington.

You may be interested in a book
'Geddington as it was'
ISBN 0-9518775-0-X
This looks at Geddington in the early 1900s
It contains references to earlier works but these have no ISBN numbers.
So far I have failed to find any living relatives (other than my cousin.
grendix@waitose.com
Dear Janine,
Good on you for having something to look forward to post retirement. I often imagine having all the time in the world to just do family history and knit, and I'm not even 40, so I've got to be patient a little longer yet. Still, I squeeze it in when no body is looking... (like now).
Are you interested in a Dix-Strongman Reunion in 2010, or am I just being too ambitious? I seem to be rallying little support from my branch of the family, and in terms of planning for it, I think its now or never.
Of the photo, I obtained a copy some time ago so I can't remember if it was from a copy or the original, but it's not too bad. I've started trying to identify the people based on what info and other photos I have - tedious work. I'd be pleased to work with you as my information about those that went to WA is limited and am happy to share what I have. Probably easier to email me directly:
katherine.dix@flinders.edu.au and we can go from there.
Cheers
Kathy

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for sharing your line of the family. I've been researching all of the Dix's in Australia and my hub is decended from George Dix and Mary Strongman, but through the Java Joseph Dix line, so we are probably 4th cousins or something.
I've not done anything recently but have much info. I'd like to find out more about the Strongman side, at last attempt, couldn't get before David Strongman and have very little on current decendents.
I was also toying with the idea of holding a Dix Strongman Reunion in 2010, to mark 100 years since the last Dix Strongman Reunion held in Renmark, 1910 (I have a photo of the gathering).
If anyone is interested in persuing this idea please contact me.
katherine.dix@flinders.edu.au
Cheers

Searching for Eleanor Belle Dix, nee Souders, born at Oak Hill, Crawford/Gasconade Counties, Missouri, in c. 1947. She is my first cousin, as her father Harold Victor Souders was my father's older brother. Eleanor was so young when she left Missouri that she may not remember me although we played together at the farm owned by our grandparents, Henry Logan and Ellen Arbelle Souders. Eleanor's half-brother was named Bruce, but I cannot remember his last name. Her mother was Iris Souders. I have the family history back to the 1700's and would love to share it with her. Additionally, there are many errors in the Souders history on the Internet. I have the family history from our great grandfather Samuel Christopher Souders and I know about Cap. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Geoff I have made great progress since I posted my message, making connections with other Dix researchers who have shared their information.
When you mention Elizabeth Cord i am assuming that you are from the David Strongman side of the family. i am trying to establish whether David's wife was Elizabeth Cord or Elizabeth Lewis. I have seen charts with both down. When I did my original research back in the 80's I wasn't so good at noting my sources and therefore cannot remember how I came to have the name Elizabth Cord. Can you tell me where you are up to with your research and where you fit into the Dix family

James Dix etc

Hi, I have been in contact with a few of you so I thought that I had better put up a message.
A common ancestor appears to be James Dix b 1779.
Joseph Had a brother Henry b about 1818. Henry's birth was not registered in Geddington but from his second marriage (his first was to a Stanley)I found that his father was James Dix

Earlier Stanleys were 'of Weekley'. This is a hamlet of about 30 houses a few miles from Geddington. I Have looked at the Weekley parish records but there is no sign of 'our' Stanleys.
The Geddington parish chest may have documents of settlement. I have not looked at the surrounding parishes in any detail. I have hoever looked at 1841 and 1851 censuses (before they were computerised)> a computer search may find were other Stanleys were born. An alternative is to look at the Kettering Parish register. 192maps may give you an idea of the area.
Hope to hear from you soon
Gren

I found my Dix family spelled "Dicks" and "Dick". It wasn't until the 1920 census that it was spelled "Dix". If you haven't tried looking for different spellings, that might help.

Beth Dix

Hi Katherine
Don't know how I came to find your message to Geoff but i also am researching the Dix family, like you also connecterd to the Strongman family through Kitty Strongman - same line as Geoff. i have been plodding along but note that i have got myself a bit confused with my typing and have to go back and do some corrections. in the meantime i am just learning how to scan and put photos in. Its fun but i am very slow. i would be very happy to share information. i have just this week retired from work - hooray - and hope to have a lot more time for researching.
I also have a photocopy of that last reunion - a very lousy copy that is no use at all. Do you have the actual photograph - i have been trying to find out how to get it.
Regards Janine
