Josiah S. Doak b. abt. 1788 and his son Jonathan b. abt. 1835 Choctaw Nation

I am looking into Jonathan Doak who was supposedly a son of Josiah Doak (b. abt. 1788 in North Carolina). I have read many of the posts about how Josiah and/or his brother William was/were the owner(s) of Doak’s Stand in Mississippi and how Josiah moved to Indian Territory ahead of the Indian removal and that the area he settled in became known as Doaksville (Oklahoma).
I also read in one post that Josiah died about 1840 in Oklahoma.
I wonder if a person I have found in the censuses (1850 and 1860) is the same Josiah Doak.
In 1850 there is a Joseph S Doak, age 61, b. NC with William H Doak, age 21, b. Miss., living in Nueces County, Texas.
In the 1850 Slave Schedule of the Nueces County, Texas area, there is a Josiah Doak listed as a slave owner (he is listed in between two persons in the same area as “Joseph S Doak” in the Federal census).
I believe that Josiah’s wife and 3 other children are in the 1850 census in Collin County, Texas in McKinney. The 3 boys and mother are listed as Elizabeth, age 40, b. Va; D., age 18, b. Choctaw Nation; R., age 13, b. Miss; and V., age 7, b. Miss., living in the Martin household.
In 1860 there is a Josiah Doak(s?) listed in Nueces County, Texas, age 73, b. Virginia living in the household of J Randolph, merchant.
In the 1860 slave schedule he is listed as J S Doaks.

Does anyone have proof of Josiah’s death around 1840? If so, can anyone figure out who this Josiah/Joseph Doak in Nueces County, Texas is descended from? Is there a will for the Doak's Stand/Doaksville Josiah S. Doak?
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I have connected my ggggrandfather Jonathan Doak as Josiah’s son first based on someone’s Rootsweb information, then from the 1850 Collin County, Texas census (I think the R stands for Robert---all 3 sons are listed with only their middle name’s initial in the census; my gggrandfather’s name is Robert) and from the 1870 Grenada, MS census where Jonathan’s birthplace is listed as Choctaw Nation. I can’t find him or his wife anywhere after the 1870 census.
If anyone has more info on Jonathan Doak (married Rebecca Wilson in 1856 in Yalobusha County, Mississippi) that would be GREAT. Thanks!
I have fairly recent Irish Doaks but could not resist photographing Doaks buried in Prineville, Or. Graves of James T., Parker, Kenneth the son of P.B. and N,E, (is this Eva?), Frank T., William M. follow each other in my pictures and probably are related. Wm. M. is buried next to James. The 40 is very clear on Wm's gravesstone and I think it says 1840.

If anyone wants pictures, please send me your e-mail address.

Hello,
My mom was a Doak and her Doak ancestors came to America between 1704 and 1720. I just visited North Ireland but was on a tour and did not have the knowledge at that time that my family may have come from Kinallen, County Down. In a family tree it says that John and Elizabeth Doak were living in County Antrim of the Province of Ulster in Ireland when they imigrated to America in the early 1700s. Dates like 1704, 1708 and 1720 have been mentioned as the arrival year for this family coming ot America. They first settled in the Nottingham Township of Chester County, Pennsylvania and latter moved to Virginia. They had the following children: Thankful Elizabeth Doak, Samuel Doak, John Doak, Robert Doak, Ann Doak, Mary Doak, and David Doak. My family comes down the line of David Doak through their son William Doak. He married Ann Stewart. I am wondering if my Doak family came from the Kinallen, County Down area originally. Thanks for any help. It was thought that John the original immigrant was kin to a Hugh Doke who was a mayor in Belfast? Some of John's descendants were named Hugh Doak.

My great aunt has researched the family tree and she has information on Doaks in Kinallen. As far as i know, there is still a Hugh Doak, cousin of my Grandad who lives in Co. Down. My great grandad married a Bell. The Doaks were always very involved with Annahilt Church, where most have been burried right up till present. My grandparents, along with my mum and dad moved to scotland from Co. Down in Jan 1981 and Bettie Doak moved to Coleraine co.antrim. I will ask them if they know anyone who may have married a Patterson.
Alex

My Doak married a Patterson in First Dromara. Isabella patterson I think (I'm at work, family tree is at home!) There were two sets of Doaks around Dromara at that time as far as I can tell. One set lived in Kinallen and were quite important people. As far as I can tell the other lot all eventually went abroad to Scotland and further afield. My lot are the second lot. Do you have more information on yours?
Ella

Mary Paisley the youngest child of William and Elener McLean Paisley was born circa 1750 in Lancaster Co., Pa. Soon after her birth her mother died and her father moved his family to Guilford Co., N.C. where lots of Scots had settled. There in 1775 she married James Wilson Doak, also from Pa. James received bounty lands in Rutherford Co., Tn. (Stones River area)for his Rev. War service and his widow with most of her children moved there, early 1800 or late 1798-99. Their daughter Mary Doak married Alexander McKeen, also a Scot from N.C., and earlier from Pa.

I have that James Wilson Doak was the son of John Doak and Mary Wilson and had a brother Robert. John was the son of Robert, likely the immigrant. I have been told that the Doak immigrant landed in Boston first, moved to New Hampshire and then to Pa.

That would be Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak who was the founder of Washington College. My husband is seventh generation from him but the generations are mostly women so I am not sure of all the names. I have them written down somewhere.

We live near Washington College so I have pictures of Doak's grave. The marker and grave are on the college's campus. Doak is quite well known for his convocation to the Overmountain men before they fought the battle (and won) of Kings Mountain (S.C.), turning point of the Revolutionary War in the South.

H:i there
I've pretty much given up on these message boards - too much unreliable data being presented as 'gospel' - but just thought I'd make clear that (Capt) James Wilson Doak was the son of John Doak and a Mary who is said to have been a Wilson: there's simply no evidence I'm aware of as to her parentage.
Also, it's only an hypothesis that John's father was Robert - personally, I think Robert's son would have been too old to have been the John Doak (my gtgtgtgtgdfather) who made no less than 3 new pioneer starts between about 1740 & 1760.
(I have a similar problem with him having been born in 1693, of course !)
do email me for more details/discussion if you wish
Best wishes
Ralph

Hi there
It's very unlikely this is any close relation of Felipe Santiago, formerly Thomas W Doak, b ca 1787 in Boston, Suffolk Co, Maine.
There were Doaks in Maine (mostly in and around Marblehead) for some years before the Ulster Scots ancestors of the Virginia Doaks arrived in America and as far as I know no connection between the families has ever been made
The Maine Doaks were seafarers - and perhaps shipwrights: the ones who went into VA from PA ca 1738 appear to have been total landlubbers !
Best wishes
Ralph

Hi there
No, you haven't got the wrong Doaks, it's just that some of the Doaks you've got are wrong !
Capt James Wilson Doak msrried Mary Paisley in 1775 - there's no record of him marrying an Elizabeth Paisley.
Doak's Stand was operated by a William Doak.
Some folks like to believe this was Capt James' son Wiliam Paisley Doak but it is much more likely that it was a son of William Doak and Ann Stuart, who also had a son called Josiah.
I am a direct descendent--my mother, Elisabeth, was their only child--of Florence Doak and Jerome Keating. I have almost no photos of either Keating, but I do have memories of them and their farm in Luther.

Jerome died in 1948 on the farm, and Florence moved to our home where she lived until 1959. She and Jerome are buried in Edmond OK. I do have a photo of their grave marker.

I met Hattie Doak Bricker twice in the mid-1960s when, as a newly wed, we lived in Morton IL. I went to visit her on Front Street in Nokomis once, and she took me to meet Opal, and two of her daughters. Hattie and Florence were very close for many years, and wrote often in later life. I loved Hattie and bet she was a REAL live wire when she was young.

I sign myself SAE

Hi,

I am looking for descendents of James (or John) W. Doak, born about 1866, in Missouri or Illinois. His parents were James Wilson Doak (born Virginia) and Mary Magdalene Sweaney (born Ohio). I believe that James W. Doak settled in Tarrant County, Texas, and his wife may have been Louise. I am a descendent of James' sister Lydia E. Doak. Am quite willing to share the Doak information that I have.

Thanks,

Joni

Hi, Ralph,

Well, I am older, but not as old as the first Doaks to arrive in the U.S.

I received my info from several researchers:

______________

John Doak:

"The ship, the "Elizabeth" held about 115 passengers so the Doak family comprised maybe 25% of the total passenger load. In those days no records were kept. No boarding place or passenger list was made. Only heads iof households were noted so females were rarely documented. Males only if head of household. When they got to Boston in November of 1718 they got a rude greeting. Boxton only wanted citizens trhat could make a living in Boxton and all others were asked to not stay in town and to move on. Boston did not need Farmers. There was no land to farm in the town. So all the Farmers were "warned out", which meant they had to go elsewhere. All the members of the family that were Farmers went to Londonderry, New Hampshire, about 75 miles from Boxton. Some of the other family membefrs did stay in Boston to become furniture makers and sailors. These were probably the brothers and sisters of Robert Doak. He and Margaret, as Farmers, went with their large group of children to Londonderry. Robert and two of his older sons, James and John, were given farms at Londonderry. The younger children, Ann, Thnakful, David, Robert and Samuel were probably on their father's and mother's farm for a few years until the parents sold their 500 acres there in 17825 and headed for Donegal, Pennsylvania. So Thankful went to Londonderry to her father's farm in 1719. She would have been 15 years old in that year. In those time, young girls were often married off at that age. Her brother James would stay at Londonderry for many years and several generations descended from him at Londonderry. Her brother John sold his farm in Londonderry in 1725, and we think that he went to Donegal, PA in 1724 or earlier and sold his Londonderry property only after he had found farm land at Donegal. We think that Thankful went to Donegal to her brother's faerm about 1724 at age 20 where she met and married John Finley. Her father Robert probably died on the trip to Donegal as there is no record of him ever arriving there. The mother, Margaret, did arrive there in 1725 with her remaining children Ann, Robert, Samuel and David. Samuel came of age and bought a farm near his brother John's land. John sold his first farm in Donegal and bought a second farm a few miles to the West. We have found that farm. The original farm probably went to Margaret as she was on the Tax Records in 1726 with her son David and would not have been there unless she was a land holder. David eventually took over the farm. So there were three Doak brothers that ownedfarms at Donegal. We think that Margaret finally died about 1732, freeing up the three brothers to pick up and follow the Scots Irish migration down the Shenandoal Valley south. They all three show up at Tinkling Springs, VA in 1742, where John married Mary Wilson and started having lots of children by her. She was much younger than he."

_____
The following 'woven" excerpts are taken from material written by David Doak descendants Marguerite T. Johnson and the late G. H. Hickox in the Doak Centennial Reunion newsletter of May 1979:

"Our Doak family, having originated in Scotland, first emigrated to North Ireland, then located in the Province of Pennsylvania before migrating into Virginia. At least Samuel, James, John, David, and Thankful are believed to have belonged to the group settling in Chester County, PA in the early 1720's." (There is more to this.)

_______________

website of John Reginald Doak, Jr. http://www.doak.ws/purpose.htm
"It is a mystery as to why John did not marry while at Donegal. It could be he was married and Mary Wilson was a seond wife, however no children from a first marriage have shown up. It is probable that he and Samuel were pre-occupied with caring for their mother Margaret and their brother David."

________________

Family Tree "Descendants of Robert Doak" sent to me by the Terrell Family years ago who have researched the Doaks:

"Children of Robert Doak and Margaret are:
1. David Doak
2. Samuel Doak
3. Ann Doak
4. Robert Doak
5. John Doak
6. James Doak, Jr.
7. Thankful Elizabeth Doak

You are descended from David".

Now, I am not married to this research. I have been able to research some of the material but until the late 1700s I am going on what other researchers have told me. Most seem to have spent an immense amount of time researching this.

My great grandmother was Lydia Elizabeth Doak, daughter of James Wilson Doak. My long passed ancestors passed down a story to my father and then to me that the name Doak originally came from an Indian by the name of Do-ox. I researched for almost 10 years to find anything on this. Then when Trees got so popular I plugged in the name Doak, and lo and behold, a whole new family appeared. I contacted some of the people who gave me the Indian ancestry story (it was actually their parents and aunts) and they told me they had realized this was quite a story but they didn't know how to contact the shirttail relatives to tell them the correct version. So you can see why I say I am not married to any research unless it's my own.

If you have any questions, please either post here or contact me at joni@mcburney.ca.

Joni
Campbell Whitfield Doak

I am looking for the parents of a Campbell Whitfield Doak who was born in Virginia but settled in Arkansas. I have his parents as Robert Doak and Elizabeth Mitchell. There is a lady on the message board that had Robert and Elizabeth having John, Polly, Jane, Isabella, Dorcas, Elinor W., and Elizabeth but no Campbell. This Robert's father was David Doak from Ireland who married Mary Polly.

Any help appreciated.

Joni

I'm looking for some information regarding James W. Doak, born 1803 in VA and died 1847 in Delaware County, Iowa. He and his daughter, Frances D. Doak, died within a day of each other - he was 44 and she was 3. He and his wife also had a son, James Doak, but I do not have any information on him.

Many of the Family Trees have him married to a Mary Wyrick, but I have not found a marriage record for this and would appreciate anyone who has information on this family to contact me through Ancestry or a joni@mcburney.ca

Thanks,

Joni

Re: Doaks in Maine and Canada: Descendents of James Doak - b. Ireland abt. 1810

Do you know if James had a brother John Doak? John was married to a Catherine Allison?. They immigrated to New Brunswick in 1857 and settled in the Fredricton area. John was born 1803 although I have seen census reports that also say 1811.
