Dobbie Family

I was born Darlene Francis Dobbie May 5th 1950. Father estranged - Mother worked for United Cigar Store at some point. I know very little of my heritage as I was adopted Darlene Deanna Nichols in 1959. I had been on an adoption agency feeder farm in Fenwick Ontario for several years until the Purdies sold out in 1958.

According to Cliff Dobbie (whom I met many years ago) I was the spitting image of his daughter at 18 yrs. He says I have "the Dobbie eyes".

I need some medical background.

Please, if anyone has information, please email tcarroccetto@cogeco.ca

I'd need more information to see whether there is a connection.
What dates do you have? Where was your James born and when?
The James who was the son of James who emigrated was born 1847 in Scotland and had lots more siblings born in Victoria. One brother was Ramsay Dobbie born 1870 who was a policeman shot while on duty.
Ring any bells?
I am a direct descendent of James and Janet Dobbie and have complied a reasonable history back to James Dobbie (1781) and Hannah Dobbie (York). They had two sons James and Thomas who emigrated to Australia. Janet Jane Cunningham Dobbie (McVickers) is the full name to include in your search, in particular if you are using the Scotlandspeople web search.

Cheers
Ken Dobbie

Do you understand the way scottish people named their children. It makes it easy to work out what the first child's name was. 1st male child has the christian name of paternal grandfather, 2nd male child has christian name of maternal grandfather, 3rd male child has christian name of father. Then 1st female child is named after maternal grandmother, second child is named after paternal grandmother and third is named after mother.

Suzanne

My grandmother used to be able to tell me this and that. Then it got too much and she used to say see Suzanne. She died at the age of 96 in 2003.

My problem was she and 2 half brothers and 1 cousin married into the same family. Somethimes it got quite confusing, plus it doesn't help when families have to call their children the same names as their ancestors (like the scottish do.)
William Dobbie had 12 children. 5 died under 3 years of age. Some of his other children who lived were Margaret, Mary, William. Archibald was the son of Robert.(My gg grandfather.)

William and wife Margaret and some of the children immigrated to Qld in 1883. Who are you descended from.

My gg grandfather Robert was the eldest son of Alexander Dobbie and Christian (Christina( Keeson (Keason).
I have quite a bit of information on William Dobbie.

Robert & William owned Bonnie Dundee Mine. They had been in partnership with Mr Black (i think its so long since i looked at the family tree) in other mines earlier.
I am the granddaughter of Alexander Dobbie who was married to Elizabeth Ann Harris. His father was William Dobbie and his mother Margaret Collier.

The Bonnie Dundee Mine sounds very familiar as does Mr Black. I can vaguely remember hearing these names as a child.

We had an Uncle Arch, who we assumed was Alexanders younger brother, but maybe we were wrong in thinking that. Don't know who Robert was though. But Christina is realted as Alexander named one of his daughters, Christina Janet Collier.

Robina passed away some years ago and she lived next door to us.

My brother and my cousin (Robina's son) still live in the family homes at Booval.

My mother Myrtle Auriel Fortescue passed away 3 years ago and she knew a lot about the Dobbies. Unfortunatley there is nobody left to ask now, so it's up to us kids to try to figure it all out.

You say that Robina had her grandfathers bible? Wonder where it is now then. I know my brother doesn't have it and nor does my cousin (Christina's eldest daughter), so I wonder then if Peter (Robina's son has it). Hmmm may have to ask him at Christmas.

I don't have much at the moment, as I'm just starting my search, but am getting there with help from some friends in Scotland and also a lady who is the great granddaughter of my great grandmothers sister.

Yep Suzanne, that is the same Bruce Dobbie, married to Margaret Williams and two daughters, Katheleen and I can't remember the other name.

I grew up with the Williams sisters and went through Sunday school, Rays, Comrades, youth group etc with them at what was Bundamba Methodist Church, and which later became Bundamba Uniting Church.

Def need to get together to get all this info sorted out. I didn't know about Dobbies at Woodend though. I knew there were some up in Booval somewhere around or in Green Street, who weren't related, but no prior knowledge of the Woodend ones though.

I need to call my cousin (Christina's daughter and give her this info as she is very interested in finding any family we have too)

The naming thing is very confusing I know it's thrown me for a six already as Sandy had sisters with the same names as his daughters. That really threw me. Then when you start going back, you see the same names popping up time and time again.

Makes me even more glad now that I gave my children their own identity, they are named for themself and not after anyone, living or dead.

Dobbie originating Lanarkshire or Dumfriesshire, Scotland 1700 & 1800s

AMAZING PHOTO: Trying to trace people interested in the fantastic photo I have of a Capt Robert William DOBBIE who served in the Royal Flying Corps & RAF – the photo was taken in Dec 1918 in Heliopolis in Cairo at end of WW1 entitled “half hour before he died” undoubtedly the last photo ever taken of him. I am not related. My grandfather was a mechanic in the RFC and he took the photo. Check your info to see if there is a connection & I will gladly fwd the photo if so. He was not married and had no children so your connection may not be direct. I think he is descended as follows:

GEN 1 Capt Robert W Dobbie b abt1894 Glasgow, Lanarkshire shown in www.CWGC.org as "Son of Jane B. Dobbie, of 26, Sandyford Place, Glasgow, and the late Rev. R. W. Dobbie.
Royal Air Force, Unit: Aerial Observation School, Age: 24 Date of Death: 23/12/1918"

GEN 2 Reverend Robert W Dobbie b abt 1860 Glasgow, Lanarkshire or 1864 Hamilton, Lanarkshire, married Jane B A NK, b abt 1861 Glasgow, Lanarkshire – he is shown as Iron Merchants Clerk in 1881 census, aged 17, but the family does have a clergyman living with them at that time so perhaps he was the influence for the career switch? Clearly a clergyman for Church of Scotland in 1891 & 1901 census. The siblings of Rev Robert W Dobbie were:
Alexander J 1855,
Alice M 1856
Ellen 1858 – all born Glasgow
James 1860 shown as born Hamilton, Lanarkshire,
Jenny or Janet P 1867,
Richard I,
John H 1868,
Kate I,
Lewis M
Lucy N.

GEN 3 Alexander Dobbie b abt 1828 Dundee or Annan, Dumfriesshire, commission merchant & tea agent, married Mary NK

GEN 4 (Father)NK Dobbie m Jane NK b abt 1806 Annan, Dumfriesshire

GEN 5 James Dobbie b abt 1766 Scotland married NK (see 1841 census Ednam St, Annan, Dumfriesshire – living with Jane daughter in law by the looks of it?).

Really hoping someone out there wants a copy of this photo!
Angela
