Hi Trudy,

Thanks for all your help, the links have been very useful.

I do have a few other queries. Again with Anna Every, in the 1891 Census it says her father is John Doble but the information you have given me says she was Elizabeths child.
Also Geogre Doble isn't mentioned in the Census after the age of 8, I was wondering if he may have died? Do you know how you find out the cause of deaths?
I was also wondering what your connection to the Doble family tree is? Are you researching the living Dobles aswell as the ancestors?

Thanks for all the help.
William

Hi Trudy

Thanks for the links. That is the Thomas that I am researching. His parents are;

John Doble
Birth: 1848, Otterford

Caroline (nee Nicks)

Then his grandparents are;

Henry Doble
Birth: 1812, otterford

Elizabeth Doble
Birth: 1822, otterford

I'm looking for Henry's and Elizabeth's parents to be able to expand the family tree.

I'm also looking for more information on Anna Every/Emery. On the 1891 census she comes up as John Doble's daughter but then I can't find any other information on her. As she can't have been Carolines daughter.

Thanks for all your help.

William

Hi Jenny

Do you mind if I ask how you know William* died in April 1834? Reason I ask is that on Frances Amy's marriage cert to Robert Dunlop (1855), William is not recorded as deceased. In the 1851 census, Elizabeth's marital status has the ditto mark of married. She is first listed as a widow in 1861.

I'm really keen to find info on William & Elizabeth's marriage (I need her maiden name!) If you do come across it, I'd be hugely grateful if you let me know! Thanks heaps

Sharron

Hi Jenny, thanks for replying to my post!

I have seen the documents you refer to regarding property, and I have also seen a document where Elizabeth and her two children (both under 5 if I remember correctly) are listed as defendents along with several other people who resided at their residence. Not sure what that was all about as havent seen the full document. I did find it odd that children would be named as defendents though.

The first I knew that William (bn 1799) had the middle name of Edward was when I received Elizabeth's death cert. Her grandaughter Mary Ann Dunlop (Frances' daughter) had registered her as widow of William Edward Doble Master Mariner.

I havent really spent much time looking for Frances brother William so I think I only know what you do. I'll let you know if I dig anything up, though I thought I found him as captain of a ship called Ness but not convinced I have that right.

I've been trying very hard to locate the marriage of Elizabeth ? (as you probably know she was born in Llanvihangel Stone) and William but hit a wall because I wasnt sure of when or where he was born - so thank you for confirming that for me! I had that one in the shoebox, but without something to verify it I wasnt sure I had the right man.

I am trying to ascertain whether William (1799) would have been captain of a slave ship - that seems to be quite a possiblity. I havent been able to find much out about him at all, nor have I found his death.

I will send you an invite to look at my tree (when I can work out how to!)

Thanks Jenny :)

Re: Captain William Edward Doble

William Doble* (no Edward?) was baptized 25 October 1799, born on St Michael's Mount, Cornwall. He was the second son of William (Master Mariner) and Amy (nee Ford). Their eldest son was Stephen b. 1797 (my ggg grandfather) and the youngest Thomas b. 1803. As you already know, William married Elizabeth ? and their three children were born in Bristol - William Edward bap. 8 Aug 1830, a Royal Marine by 1875; Frances Amy bap. 26 May 1833 and Elizabeth bap. 25 Dec 1833, who died on 27 Dec 1837 in Weston Super Mare. William* died in April 1834 in St James, Bristol. Elizabeth seems to have owned houses in Bristol - as mentioned in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. She is described as a Captain's widow in the 1871 census and died the following year. Apart from the mention on documents relating to properties in Bristol in 1875 with his sister, Frances and brother-in-law, Robert Hicks Board, I have found no further mention of William Edward so would be very interested to know if you know what happened to him. Frances married twice, having two daughters by her first husband and died some time between 1875 and 1881.

I have a Mary Doble in my family whom I have been having trouble finding where she was born or her parents.

We have found Mary Doble in the 1881 census.

In the 1881 RG11/2386, folio 150, p 14 (Lower Marshwood, Cricket St. Thomas, Somerset) (Loud, dairy) DOBLE, Mary, 19, unmarried, dairy maid, birth place not given.

The marriage certificate showed:

1882 Marriage solemnized at the parish church of Winsham, Somerset, No 235
4 September 1882 between
James Chick, 22, bachelor, labourer, residing Winsham; father = Charles (deceased) labourer
Mary Doubell, 22, Spinster, domestic servant, residing Marshwood in Cricket St. Thomas
Witnesses Henry and Charlotte Chick
There marriage certificate does not list her father.

The 1891 Census shows Mary Doble being born in Colyton Devon, we believe there is a spelling error somewhere showing Chick as Check.

James CHECK 30 occ Farmers Labourer b Winsham
Mary 28 b Colyton
Harry 6 b Winsham
Polly 4 b Burton Dorset
Flora 8 b Winsham
John 2 b Lyme
Residing at Colway Dairy, Charmouth Street Lyme Axminster Devon
Census Ref RG12/1666/50/16

Death James Chick Sept 1900 aged 39 Bridport 5a 199

1901 Census

Mary Chick Widow 36 b Whitechurch Dorset
Joseph 15
Frank 11
Emma 9
Florence 8
Bessie 4
Charles 2
Residing at 1, Greenway, Whitechurch, Canicorum Bridport Dorset
Census Ref RG13/2014/64/12

We are currently waiting on a birth to arrive on Frank to double check that this is the same Mary.

We did find three possible Mary's

There is a Mary Doble on the 1871 census aged 10 years living at Honiton with parents Thomas and Ann. Mary born in Gittisham in 1861. 1Q'61 5b/24

2Q'61 Mary Ann Honiton 5d/27
1Q'63 Mary Jane Honiton 5d/20(or 24?)

- the Mary from Gittisham has been eliminated as she was working as a parlour maid in Dwalish Devon in 1881 census.
- the Mary born in 1863 has been eliminated as she was working as a kitchen maid at the vicarage house in Bovey Tracy Devon in 1881 census.

This currently leaves us with the Mary born in Combe Raleigh.

Combe Raleigh Mary in 1971 census

Henry-1807-Stockland Devon Ag Lab

Harriot-1821-Cotleigh Devon Needlewoman

Mary A 1862 Combe Raleigh

Emma-1864-Combe Raleigh

Checking Combe Raleigh in 1881 by following her family, in 81 Henry and Harriet and her sibling Emma were living in Combe Raleigh, in 1891 Harriet is widowed and lives with 2 daughters, son in law and a grandchild in Honiton, 1901 Harriet still in Honiton with daughter and family, so we know Mary left the family sometime after the 1871 census.

Any help in trying to find out further information on Mary would be greatly appreciated. We are currently awaiting Mary's birth certificate to see who it states her parents are. There is a slight possibility that she was a base born child of one of the older daughters which would explain why she did not state her fathers name on her marriage certificate.

mary ann doble 1861 Jun Honiton 5b 27

Any help in trying to find out further information on Mary would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Trudy
Erastus was sent to GA to Andersonville Prison, also documented.

Sheila Doble Hayden

I am seeking information about Erastus Doble's Civil War service. In researching another soldier, Lyman L. Stuart of Wells, ME, I have found an affidavit from Erastus Doble dated March 1866 attesting to witnessing the death of Lyman Stuart while they were both in the Confederate prisoner of war camp in Millen, GA called Camp Lawton. I'm specifically interested in how Doble came to provide this affidavit. I've seen his Maine Bugle article "Reminiscences" and wonder if there are other writings specifically about his capture and time in Andersonville and Camp Lawton?

Have just read your message. I am a direct decendant of Robert Doble. Robert married Martha (maiden name unknown)in Cookham, Berks about 1819. James (1820?) was born in Cookham. William (1829?) was born in Islington and Robert (1837?) was born in Camberwell. What is your connection with the Doble family? If you are interested, we could discuss the rest of the family tree further.

Les Doble

Doble family in Puerto Rico

I am trying to search for the first Doble to arrive in Puerto Rico. Family history goes that it was a French engineer that came to work in the sugar cane industry. All Doble's in PR are related, so I believe we have the same common ancester. Unfortunately, all I have is the last name and that he may have been married to a Gabriela Gonzalez of San Sebastian. It is also pausible he had another marriage or relationship with a woman from Humacao. I imagine he arrived in PR after 1815 as a result of the emigration of Europeans to Spanish colonies as a result of the Real Cedula de Gracias.

I have an Ellen Loraine Burrier, daughter of Leslie Burrier and Nora Ethel Eads. I don't have any birth information for them, only their names, but I hope this helps.

Ellen married William Eden Tubbs, son of George Parker Tubbs and my 2nd cousin Edna Maud Doble. I don't have any information on Nora except that she was the daughter of William and Edna. Hope this helps.

Myrna (Doble) McGhie

Hello Cousin,

My birth name is Myrna Lee Doble and I am the daughter of Archie Levi Doble. I'm a 2nd cousin (2xR) of your great grandfather, Clarence. Our comman ancestors were Elijah Doble and Hannah Eliza Drake. It appears that you and I would be 4th cousins. I have quite a bit of information on this line and would be happy to share with you.

Myrna (Doble) McGhie
Fairbanks, AK
To Dave D

YES, you are right, the date for Samuel is a Baptism. I tend to use the initial b for the date which can stand for either birth or baptism. Before Civil Registration, there is usually only a baptism date available, which I am sure you are aware of. BTW, I missed Tom's wife's surname in my last e-mail. It is HOUSE.
YES, I would appreciate information on your line.
YES, I have more ancestral information for John b 1805
William DOBLE b 1772 = Mary GOODINHAM b 1772
Robert DOBLE b 1742 = Mary RICHARDS b 1746
William DOBLE b 1707 = Sarah UNKNOWN
Thomas DOBLE b 1681 = Mary DYER b 1679
William DOBLE b 1650 = Mary SYMONDS b circa 1650

You can e-mail me directly for more information
Karen
karenj@ca.inter.net

My William was the son of Thomas Doble and Eleanor Chub Congdon. He was born March 12, 1837 in Polkinnis, Cornwall, England and died in 1863 in Bombay, India. He had two brothers Thomas born 1832 in Rythe, Kent, England married Eliza Unknown and Edward born October 04, 1842 in Charlestown, Cornwall, England married Elizabeth unknown and one sister named Emma C.(possibly Congdon) born 1841 in Fowey, Cornwall, England who married John Segrue of Cork, Ireland. William was not a sea captain. He was a pay master and fell off the ship while in dock and broke his neck in 1863 in Bombay, India.

William DOBLE b 1837 lived and died in Uplyme, although he was born in Combpyne. He died in 1849. Parents were John DOBLE of Farway, Devon, and Sarah MATTOCKS of Combpyne. Is this the same fellow? I have more information on his family if you need it.

Regards,
Karen
