I believe Richard, b 24 Aug 1802 in or near Selside, Westmorland, England, bpt on 12 Sep 1802 in Selside, was the child of John Dobson and Elizabeth Grime/Grimes. John was born at a farm or hamlet called Dry Howe, now seen only on hikers' maps, and was baptised in St Thomas's Church in Selside. Elizabeth's parents were John Grime and Anne unk of Killington. Charlotte Havenor Dobson was the daughter of Johann "Jacob" Hafner and Maria "Elizabetha" Wing of the Einod district of Homburg. Jacob, like many of his family, was baptised in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in nearby Ernstweiler. This community is on the outskirts of Zweibrucken. The couple immigrated with their first few children, and assorted other relatives, from Amsterdam to New York, arriving on 16 Oct 1821. Jacob's parents were Heinrich Jacob Hafner and Maria Elizabetha Weber. Jacob's paternal grandfather was Caspar Moritz Hafner and Catherine Hassselir. Elizabetha Wing's parents were Melchior Wing and Esther Pirro/Pirront. This area changed hands many times as the French, Belgiums, and Austrians fought for control of it. It finally became part of Germany, sometimes identified as being part of Pfalz, Bavaria. Some records and names are in French and some in German and many have been lost.
