Was this ever posted to the Internet? If so, what is the link?

I'm trying to discover information about a Timandra Dobyns (1830-1880), daughter of John Dobyns, who married Alexander Howell. There is some information available that would suggest John Dobyns (1783-1831) was the son of Griffin Dobyns (1743-1819), son of Griffin Dobyns (1705-1750), son of Daniel Dobyns (1653-1713).

Thanks!

Dobyns 1845 in Alabama died in 1927 Plantersville, Dallas, Alabama and in 1847 William Dobynes was born in Alabama and died in 1906 in Perry, Alabama. I am thinking there may be a connection. I am having problems finding Nathaniel Land Dobynes parents and family.

You probably already have this info, but here it is in case you don't. Your branch of the kennerly tree is from Kennerly's second marriage to Mary Kelso. My branch of Kennerly's tree is from his first marriage to Mary Groseclose. I was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1939. My father and his siblings were born in either Oklahoma or Texas, but moved to California in 1943.
My Great Grandfather Thomas Jefferson Dobyns was Joseph Marion Dobyns half brother.
Let me know if I can be of more help.
TOM DOBYNS-tomgolfs99@aol.com

¶N01-02 KENNERLY DOBYNS (from ¶N01-01) was born about 1821 in Montgomery Co VA. His name was variously spelled Kinnley, Kenaly and Kinnerly. On the 1850 census, Kenely Dobins, a farmer from Virginia, appeared in the enumeration for Union Town, Trinity Co CA, working as a miner on 28 Sept 1850. He married (1st) on 24 Mar 1854 in Franklin, Johnson Co IN to Esther A. Groseclose, daughter of Jacob Groseclose and his wife Elizabeth Lowe. Kennerly and Esther and most of the Groseclose family moved to Story Co IA about 1854. They settled in the southern part of Story Co in an area known as Cambridge where Kennerly became a successful wheat farmer. Esther was born about 1828 and died about 1872 at age 44. She gave birth to five children, but developed severe depression and spent much of 12 years in the Iowa Hospital for the Insane in Mt Pleasant IA before her death. Kennerly then married (2nd) in Jan 1872 Mary Eliza Kelso, a full-blooded Cherokee, who had been his housekeeper and helped raise his children by the first marriage. About 1876 they moved from Iowa to Texas. There are some recorded accounts that the family lived in Grayson Co TX, but traveled between Texas and the Chickasaw Nation. In 1888 Mary Eliza and Kennerly died the same day of yellow fever, apparently being exposed to this disease while waiting for an opportunity to cross the flooded Red River with a herd of horses and cattle that they were bringing home to Texas. Their orphaned children, except Oscar, left for the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, to work on the cattle ranch of Holmes Willis. Charles worked on the Willis ranch and other ranches for several years to support his younger siblings.

Children of the first marriage were

John Jacob Dobyns, born about 1857 in Story Co IA. He married (1st) an unidentified spouse about 1888 and fathered four children. He married (2nd) Mary J. Dobbs, born about 1854. There is a record that J.J. Dobyns, age 47, married Mary J. Dobbs, age 50, on 23 Dec 1904 at Leigh, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. In the 1900 Census he appears among the inmates at Leavenworth Penitentiary. In the 1920 Census he appears in Boone Twp, Coal Co OK with his wife Mary J. Dobyns.

Elizabeth C. Dobyns, born Oct 1859 in Story Co IA, died after 1889, married Mr Barnett. Apparently she was the Bettie Barnett, sister, in the 1900 census listing with Thomas Dobbyns in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.

Ella M. Dobyns, born 5 Mar 1862 in Story Co IA, died 4 Dec 1885 at Whitehead, Garvin County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma)

Thomas Jefferson Dobyns, b 27 Mar 1864 (See ¶N01-07)

Martha Elmira Dobyns, b 23 Oct 1866 (See ¶N01-08)

Children of the second marriage were

Oscar Dobyns (See ¶N01-09)

Charles Kinley Dobyns (See ¶N01-10)

Infant son, d 20 Feb 1875, buried at Center Grove Cemetery, Cambridge, Story Co IA with stone

Joseph Marion Dobyns (See ¶N01-200)

David Fletcher Dobyns (See ¶N01-11)

Viola Gertrude Dobyns (See ¶N01-12)

Infant child, born about 1887, died 1888 in Texas in same yellow fever epidemic as parents.

My Dad's name is David Dewayne Dobyns who's father's name was Jack Dobyns and his father's Name was Joseph Marion who was the child of Kennerly (Sp) Dobyns. Joseph died in Boswell Oklahoma in 1929.
For now, I have to say I've learned that Orlena and I are likely 1/2 cousins. Just hurriedly skimmed over some material, which reports that Oscar was born to Kennerly and Mary Eliza Kelso Dobyns, rather than Esther Ann Groseclose Dobyns. Whatever, Orlena and I share the same gr-gr- grandfather, and we didn't know, so please let her know, when time permits.

The photos: Oscar's sister or 1/2 sister, Mattie Dobyns jaye, my gr-grandmother and her husband, John M. Jaye; Mattie and her children. I'll send a link or 2 about them asap.

Many thanks for replying. I'd made contact with John Madden, who sent photos, and he contacted Barbara Warren, who'd sent the most recent report. Let me know if you've touched base with either of them as they seem to have much more info, at this time.
J.

My great-great-grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Dobyns, Sr. (a well-known photographer of his day) who had eight daughters and one son--Thomas Jefferson Dobyns, Jr. TJD, Jr. (1851-1881) married a woman named Fannie and lived in Saint Louis where they had one son, George. I understand that when TJD died at such a young age (just before he was 30 years old), Fanie and baby George moved away, but I have no idea where. Could this be a connection to you?

All this talk about Henry C. Dobyns and Mattie Tomlinson, might just be in vain. As of today, there is "No" male decendants in "Mattie Tomlinson's linage" that we're aware of that will continue to carry on the Dobyns surname. Our Mattie had six daughters and three sons William, MonCrief, and Claude. William dissapears prior to 1910 ( we assume he's deceased, prior to the age of 35... but ..??? ), MonCrief, there's no indication that he father'd any male sons, while married to Bessie, and Claude G. Dobyns, had one son (Claude D. Dobyns) I'm aware of, but there is NO indication that he had fathered any boys (only two girls) ... But these guys might had served overseas for the military. Like myself, I was born overseas of American parents, on US Military soil. Only time will tell if there are any male Doybyns left in my linage ... (maybe 1940 Census could reveal new info). Oddly this same pattern of "Femaling Out" almost occurs with the families of William Thomas B. Sr." Dobynes and Lucy Jane (Dobynes) Stodghill.

Your probably asking what proof do I have showing that Martha A. "Mattie" Tomlinson was married to a Henry C. Dobyns.... ??? THREE their childrens Death Certificates state the father was "Henry Dobyns" and one infant's gravestone states "Dau of H. C. & M. A. Dobyns"

... Biggerstaff, Parilee Myrtle (Dobyns) - death certificate states father "Henry Dobyns"
... McKinley, Emmer Lou (Dobyns) - death certificate states father "Henry Dobyns"
... Morris, Ollie (Dobyns) - death certificate states father "Henry Dobyns"
... Dobyns, Jessie - Dec 1892 - Sep 1893 - gravestone states "Dau of H. C. & M. A. Dobyns"
one child's name is unknown (b. btw 1877-1881, d. unknown)
William Dobyns & Lela Dobyns can not be located after 1900
Mon Crief's death certificate state father "unknown"
Florence (d. Dec 1951) & Claude (d. Jan 1973) death California death certificates "I do not have"

Thank you,
Michael A.
Hi Michael,

The 2nd wife of Henry C Dobynes was Mary Evie Loney Reid. One of their daughters is named Mary Evie Loney Jane Dobynes. She was nicknamed Mel-j based on her initials. I knew Mel-j very well all my life. She died in 2006 at the age of 93 (I think).

She told me that her father was born 9/17/1846 and died 12/10/1927. She was very sharp and could spit out dates without hesitation. I was amazed!

Of course, all she knew about the 1st wife was what her father told them. She would have been stunned, dismayed and just devastated if she'd thought her father had children that he had abandoned.

I did find a better location to his grave. I'm not sure if Mel-j was accurate about its location. He is buried in the Dobynes Cemetery on County Road 221 just north of Selma, AL and before you get to the Plantersville Community.

You are most welcome to email at my home email, genealogybuff@bellsouth.net.

Linda Haskell

I've had a lot of time thinking about the Henry C. Dobyns you mentioned, buried beside someone's fence. Here's what I know about "your Henry Dobynes"

1846, Dec - born AL
1850 - Radfordville, Perry Co., AL (with parents)
1860 - Severe, Perry Co., AL (with parents)
1868, 7 Oct - Perry Co., AL - marries - Martha E. Morris
1870 - Perry Co., AL - with wife, (no kids) & sister's family - Lucy Jane (Dobynes) Stodghill
1880 - .....?? unknown
1890 - .....?? unknown
1900 - Severe, Perry Co., AL "widowed"
1907 - married "Effie" (age 25), (Henry's, 61) ... refer to 1910 census,
1910 - Severe, Perry Co., AL, married-1 (deception) wife Effie (age 28), child Mary (5 months old).
1920 - .....?? unknown
1930 - .....?? unknown

QUESTIONS:
1) as you stated "but Martha supposedly would not leave her parents and eventually they divorced and he remarried." ...... this statement tell's me that Henry wanted to go ... where, when, - could mean Martha Morris and Henry Dobyns divorced shortly after 1870 in Perry Co. ...???

2) I would like to know more about this Mary Reid, you mentioned ( you refer to her as his second wife, and having 4 of his children ) .... could your info have been an error, confusion with Effie's and Henry's daughter "Mary" ..... or is this Effie's real name ...??

3) I have not been able to find Henry & Effie Dobynes in 1920, ..... Did Henry died as a result of the 1919 flu epidemic, after WWI .... ???? Henry would of been 74, can you provide dates.. ???

4) Have you located Henry's burial spot, as stated in the previous messase (along someone's fence)..??

SUMMARY:
Absolutely .... I believe this is the Henry C. Dobyns, I'm looking for. I believe your story about Martha (Morris) Dobyns, not wanting to leave Perry County, and them divorcing ... I believe he met Martha A. Tomlinson, moved to Arkansas, then Texas, and gave my Grt-Grt-grandmother 9 to 10 children ... between 1875 to 1897.... I believe he went back to Perry County, AL ( with NO intentions of returning ) abandoning his second wife in Texas, and hooked up with a gal half his age ..... I appologize, if I'm blunt about this, but we,ve been looking for him for years, and this just might be the one..

I know that there are papers stating the Edward Dobyns fought in the Revolutionary War. I have found papers for Apollo Cooper whose daughter, Sarah R Cooper married the son of Edwards and Frances Dobyns. And then saw some papers about Edward Dobyns being in the Virginia 3rd. But I need some guidance on where those papers are and if I can get copies for my suppliment application to DAR. I am descended from Edwards Dobyns through his son, Berry, then Berry's son James Brown Dobyns, then through James' daughter, Mary Porter Dobyns DeWitt.

I need some help, please. My many thanks in advance,
Linda DeWitt Hughey

I know nothing further about him, but Bedford County is only about 40 miles from Floyd County, and he could easily have moved that far.

The site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbr/howe... has her listed as Timandra Howell, wife of Alexander Howell. That site says that was b. c1813 Floyd Co., VA, d/o John Dobyns & cousin of Samuel Dobyns. The site is entitled Howell Families in Floyd Co., Virginia -- Part 1. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this site (the other two are mine), but it seems a good point to begin.

Looking at http://myoutbox.net/ddcv09.htm#453, Samuel Russell Dobyns (1810-1872) of Floyd CH was a son of Abner Dobyns, son of Griffin Dobyns, and thus was a first cousin of Timandra Howell, as the Howell Families site suggests.
Yes! Another relative! My 2x greatgrandfather was James Brown Dobyns, the son of Berry Dobyns and brother of Benjamin Franklin Dobyns. Please contact me at OKCOWGIRL52@HOTMAIL.COM for further information. I have alot of information out on my family tree that is on Ancestry.com. In fact, I have been in contact with another descendant of Benjamin Doybyns just this week comparing notes.

James and his wife, Sabina Bruce Summer DeWitt daughter was my greatgrandmother, Mary Porter Dobyns. I love saying that name - Mary Porter Dobyns. She married William Thomas DeWitt Jr in 1869 in Columbus, Johnson County, Missouri. I have found out from the other Dobyns relative that the church in Columbus was kinda a headquarter of the Confederacy there in Johnson County. Both William Thomas and his brother, John fought in the Civil War. John was a POW at Fort Delaware and William Thomas was wounded in Vicksburg and the Battle of Corith.

As I said, contact me at OKCOWGIRL52@ HOTMAIL.COM and I will share what I have with you.

Linda DeWitt Hughey

Re: DOBYNS, Edward

See http://myoutbox.net/ddcv03.htm#121

I suspect a bit of confusion in the reading of the records here.

EDWARD DOBYNS was apparently born on 7 Dec 1747 in Caroline Co. Va. and died on 3 Apr 1794, probably in Mason Co. Ky. There is a book called Dobyns Cooper and Allied Families (see http://myoutbox.net/dobcoop.htm) published in 1908, which, in an apparent mistake, stated that he was born in Englnd. His ancestry for another three generations in Virginia is traced on this web site.

Edward did have a son named Berry Dobyns, who had a son named Benjamine Franklin Dobyns. Benjamine Franklin Dobyns however, was married to Margaret Ruth Morrow from 1848 to 1878. They had a son named Benjamine Graves Dobyns, who lived from 1856 through 1868. Thus it is unlikely that he had a son named Benjamin Franklin Dobyns in 1865 by a wife named Elizbeth Warner. At the time he already had a living son named Benjamin and he also had another wife.

I suspect that someone has mistakenly grafted onto this family a person born in 1865 named Benjamin Franklin Dobbs, thinking that the names are so similar, so that is where he must belong. But he does not belong there.

I am indeed fairly familiar with this line. I am wondering where your information about the Dobyns/Frances Howe information came from--the Cooper-Dobyns book or from your relative. The generations after Edward pretty much kept the surname "Dobyns." I have never heard of any segment of the family changing it to "Dobbs" and wonder if your relative might be following a false lead in identifying and tracing her family. Anyway, I will attach my Edward Dobyns group sheet and let you know there is complete Dobyns information, including a lot contributed by me, on Kenneth Dobyns' Dobyns web page. I don't have the url right at hand, but you should be able to find it easily through Google. Please let me know if you can find out where the Frances Howe information came from.

Pat

Your Elizabeth Dobyns is probably Elizabeth Catherine Dobyns, daughter of Francis Marion Dobyns and his first wife Caroline Wolford. He was born on 17 Feb 1834 and died 25 June 1917 and was buried in Brandon CO. He married Caroline on 4 Aug 1864 and she died on 3 May 1876.

See Daniel Dobyns of Colonial Virginia, paragraph 515 for the rest of this family.
