Hi, The Docherty family at 30 High Street Kilsyth are my G.G.Parents, They were married in Co. Donegal on 25th Feb 1871 and There is a William on the family tree. He was 5 yrs younger than my Gran Elizabeth (Leezie)
I can tell you there was no Bridget in the family and I am thinking it could be another family altogether.

However some personal notes I have for the same area:
Bridget Docherty married Patrick Cullen in 1902 in Kilsyth,Stirlingshire
James Stars was born on 25 Dec 1863 in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire
Ellen Docherty or Shaw married Henry Dempsey in 1897 in Kilsyth
Bridget Docherty married William Shaw on 3 Jun 1881 in Kilsyth
My own search is also driving me crazy and becomming an obsession now.

HI< I went to see that memorial As I am tracing my late grandfather william Docherty who died in September 1917. He came from Waterloo but I do not know his birth date. He was in the Irish Guards and his nunber was 6388. He was married to Rose Lennard and she gave birth to a son William in Novemeber 1917. I would be interested in discussing the how likely it is that we may be talking about the same person here?
Helena
hrbdg@hotmail.com

I have the memorial card for Charles stating he died Nov 20, 1901 when he accidentally drowned on the River Clyde. I know he was married to Mary McGinty(maiden) McFadden(1st husband w 3 kids) b.1870 in Donegal Ireland. Charles & Mary had 1 child Sarah Theresa Docherty b.1897 Glasgow,Scotland.

Michael b.1893, Dennis b.1888 & Alice McFadden b1890, Sarah Theresa & Mary came to the USA between 1910-1915 and lived in Bayonne NJ. In 1920&30 Census it shows different spelling for Docherty - Dougherty but I would guess the card is the right way

Does anyone have an idea? Charles is my great grandfather.

tea4sanity@ gmail. com

Hi Margaret,
I;m sorry our connection didn't work out but there may still be something lurking in our family trees.
I don't know when you were last in Edinburgh but you would almost certainly find it much changed. Porty is having a bit of a makeover partly because they have had to move tons of sand from one end to the other. We are having trams installed and Princes Street has been in chaos for some time now. I think the predicted date for completeion is 2013 but you can probably get the latest news on the website.
Joe

Hi Joe,thank you for replying so quickly, luckly we are on high ground and did not have any flood damage. We live in Lockyer Valley where most ofthe damage in this area happened and they are still finding bodies in the debris. It has been a sad time for all concerned. My G.Grandmother was Catherine Cairns. Her dad was Edward and her mum was Mary Finnagin.Marys father was Michael Finnigan and her mother was Rose McCall.Catherine, first husband was James Keenan who died at the age of 21 She moved to Bothwell Lanark and married Thomas Docherty in Holytown on 7 1 1870.They had 4 children together.Neil B/3 11 1870 Margaret B/1 9 1872 Mary B/1874 and Hannah B/1878.She had two girls born out of wedlock Catherine B/19 8 1865 and Elizabeth B/31 3 1868.Both were born in Bothwell and as far as I know never married. All of this ancestry is Irish .My mother,s father was born in Belfast and all her family tree is mainly Irish.Well Joe I hope this helps you in some way and if I can be of any further help just ask.Cheers Margaret.

Hi Margaret,
I appreciate you taking the time to check this out before replying. I know how easy it is to make a mistake!
Yes, I am in Scotland (Edinburgh). The family however originated in the west of scotland, having come originally from Ireland. It's freezing here but nothing compared to the problems you are having. Are you in the flood zone?
I hope you are all safe and well.
Joe
joeand.audrey@talktalk.net

I haven't looked at my Docherty line in a long time but Cecilia Wyllie (nee Docherty) lived at 25 Vennel in 1860 and 1870 censuses. She moved to Canada and then the US in 1876.

I have copies of letters which have the name McCann in them. I don't think its a coincedence that they lived at the same address.

Dennis J. Wyllie

Bigdoc:

I see what you mean about the Doherty/Docherty line. My grandmother always said her family was Scottish; however, when researching the family, I found that her mother and grandparents were all born in Ireland. My gg grandmother was born Sabina Doherty, but when she moved to Scotland, her name was changed to Docherty, along with her parents, Patrick and Bridget (need Malloy). It became somewhat confusing when trying to find them all in Scotland and the U.S.

Hi!
I hope you got my message through Ancestry and saw the 1930 U.S. Census data in a message I sent you through the mail list behind this board. According the board message a couple ahead of this, I'd say her name was spelled "DOHERTY" and is probably the one with her Mother Margaret. Most non-Scottish-descent individuals (through the Father's line) used the spelling DOHERTY or DOUGHERTY whereas the DOCHERTYs who considered themselves of pure-Scottish-descent (like my GPa and G-GPa) used the "CH". If you recall, the 1930 census showed the her Father as of Irish descent.
However, I've been researching the DOCHERTY/DOHERTY family in Scotland for over 35 years, and I now have a list of over 200 different spellings of the name in all of English, Gaelic, French, and Latin, all languages which were used at one time or another in Scotland. In general, there are many more Irish-Celtic-descended DOCHARTAIGHs/DOHERTYs than Scottish.

David Alexander (Al) DOHERTY (GPa was DOCHERTY)
Pickering, Ontario, Canada

(illegible) and Margaret Docherty was born on March 27, 1898 to William Docherty and Margaret Stirling. No records of any Margaret's born in Greenock in 1897. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for your message. It looks like we have a connection.

My connection is with the Docherty/Brogan branch. Elizabeth Brogan(b 1854) was a g g aunt of my mother. They were from Donegal. She married Neil Docherty, also Irish, son of Neil Docherty and Hannah MacLachlan. Neil was brother to Thomas Docherty, who married Catherine Cairns. they had 5 children of whom I am aware.

Docherty that came to Canada

Hi, I've been curious about my father's family for a long time. I have had no contact with anyone from my father's side of the family as he divorced my mother when I was very young. His name(and mine as i was named after him) was/is Thomas James Docherty. All I know is that either him or his parents came to Canada(toronto, ontario) from Scotland.

Updated - as I guessed, they were all from Mayo, Ireland. Patrick & Bridget had Richard (born abt 1854) and Patrick (unknown birth date). Bridget is listed on one record at Malloy and on another Mulloy. Patrick is listed on Sabina's marriage record (1875) as Docherty; however, her birth record shows Doherty.

Patrick Docherty

Looking for any info on my great great great grandfather, Patrick Docherty. Born in the early to mid 1830s, he married Bridget Malloy. The only child I know of is their daughter, Sabina (b: 1857), who married Richard Mullen around 1872. I'm pretty sure that all were born in Ireland and moved to Glasgow. I know that it's not much information, but any leads would be very helpful.

Thanks!
