As an update to this posting, I have been able to glean a bit more information about this family from other obituaries, marriage records as well as some creative census research.

John E. & Flora Doddridge's children were:

John Robert Doddridge
b. abt 1907, Dyer County
I last find him in the 1920 Census with the family living in District 14 of Dyer County, TN. Still no idea where he ended up, but due to a couple of Flora's brothers having settled around Granite City, Illinois, I'm going to begin searching there.

JoElla Doddridge Hamilton
b. abt 1894 Dyer County, TN
d. 21 Dec 1978, Memphis, TN
buried in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg, TN.

JoElla married Will A. Hamilton in 1910 in Dyer County. Thanks to a letter from my great-grand aunt to a cousin on another branch of the family, I know Will & JoElla had at least two children, daughters Nina (b. abt 1910) and Mary (b. abt 1913). Will Hamilton died in February 1939, and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Finley, Dyer County, TN.
Hello Listers,

I have been in touch with Robert and David offline and appreciate the exchange very much.
Robert very helpfully took a look at the microfilmed references he mentioned in his post. He thought that there wasn't anything in them that would connect Mary Doddridge Humphreys to Richard Humphreys emigrant abt 1826 to South Africa. These references are:
1)"Doddridge Chapel Comunity Yesterday and Today" by Cecilla Ranck and 2)"The Settlement and Indian Wars of the Western Parts of Virginia and Pennsylivania, 1763-1783" by Joseph Doddridge
From David I received a Descendancy chart of Richard Doddridge, b ca 1530, merchant of Barnstaple. There is a lot to absorb from that chart!
Thanks to all who helped.
I would like to contact Denis Grahahm who has posted to the list previously. I tried to use the email on his profile and it was rejected. Denis, Can you please contact me?
Thanks,
Pat Lowe, Woodbury Minnesota
patgenl@aol.com

Thanks for replying to my post. I appreciate the information on sources about Phillip Dodderidge. Can you shed any further light on Mary Doddridge's descendants? I can send you a list of my sources for that family--off line--if you are interested.
thanks, Pat Lowe
Patgenl@aol.com

There are two main reference texts that I have come across for the Doddridges one is "Doddridge Chapel Comunity Yesterday and Today" by Cecilla Ranck. This text has info on Philip and traces his line back to John Dodderidge, Lord of Crediton - 1500 in England. It includes that his Philip's daughter Mary married John Humphreys but has nothing more recent. It also lists some sources. This text is had to find. I bought a copy on micro film from Heritage Quest V140 Roll 143.

The second is "The Settlement and Indian Wars of the Western Parts of Virginia and Pennsylivania, 1763-1783" by Joseph Doddridge. You would want the 1912 edition because that has family history added. It was republished by Heritage Books, Inc. in 1988 This book mentions Philip but does not have any thing on his daughter Mary. It is a very intersting read.

Re: Joseph Doddridge

I have been researching the Dodderidge family for a few years now. My husband's family is supposed to descended from Rev. Phillip Doddridge and his wife Mercy Maris through their daughter Mary Dodderidge, 2nd wife of John Humphreys.

Unfortunately, no one in the family gave any sources or documentation, so I have been working backwards from the point at which I am certain of the facts. My husband's ggg father was Richard Humphreys who was supposed to be the son of John Humphreys and Mary Doddridge.
He emigrated to South Africa and his son Joseph Richard Humphreys married Charlotte Elizabeth Poulton another English emigrant. That much I can verify.

Joseph and Charlotte joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and emigrated to Utah in the 1850's. I have been able to adequately document the arrival of the Poulton family in South Africa and trace some descendants, but I have not yet found anything specific on the emigration of Richard Humphreys to South Africa. I have found some descendants and am corresponding with them. They tell some interesting stories about the Humphreys family, but nothing that directly connects the Humphreys of Tewkesbury to Richard Humphreys who emigrates to South Africa.

I have also collected some information on Phillip Doddridge and Mercy Maris since he is so well known and also such an interesting person. And also some info on his ancestors.

I would like to coordinate my efforts with you and share what I have. Hope to hear from you soon.

Peggy, I don't seem to check this site often. Strangly, we are in Shelbyville, IN as Don's mother died. We thought we might try to find Doddridge Chapel so I was looking again for the information you had given me before. I don't have too much information on Don's family on the Doddridge side. His Grandmother, Naomi Dennis, did not talk about it as she and Emery were only married briefly and she had remarried. At least we assume they were married. I would be glad to help if I can. I have to track down my file as I have changed computers. Best Wishes, Jeannie Doddridge

There was an Amanda Doddridge (b ca 1823; d ca 1900 - Louisiana) who on 26 May 1845 married a William C. Parker in Lawnce, Ohio.

I have no information about Amanda's parents, though there are two Doddridges shown in Ohio in the 1850 United States Census who would appear to be pretty good candidates to be her parents. These are:

Phillip Doddridge (b ca 1795 - VA) and Matilda Willis Doddridge (b 22 Nov 1802 - Ohio)

Dr. Joseph Doddridge (b 21 Jan 1809 - Wellsburg, VA) and Nancy (b ca 1809 - PA)

William C. Parker and Amanda Doddridge were the parents of Ellen "Nelly" Parker, who was born in Louisiana in 1846.

I have almost NO information on any of the Dandridge clan. Any additional information clearly identifying the parents of Amanda Doddridge as well as any information on their lines would be much appreciated!
I'm seeking any information on the family of John E Doddridge and Flora Margaret Presley Doddridge of Dyer County, Tennessee. John was born 11 APR 1871 and died 18 JUN 1930. My only sources so far, are their marriage record, her death certificate and obit, and their tombstones. I know they had at least one son, also John, and her obituary lists a daughter married to a W.A. Hamilton of Finley, but I have no idea what happened to them between their marriage and their deaths.

Flora is the sister of my great-great grandfather, and I'm hoping to find any of their descendants.

Looking for Nancy Doddridge western PA circa 1800

I am decended from the Manchester Line that lived in Washington PA. I have gotten a great deal of info on the Doddridge's and the Manchester's from Joseph Doddridge's Book "Notes on the Settlement and Indian Wars ..." Based on the book it is clear that the two families were well known to each other. One of my ancesters Benjamin Manchester b. 1786 in Rhode Island and moved to Washington PA (son of Isaac Manchester) married a Nancy Doddridge and setteled in Canfield Ohio. Nancy and Benjamin had four children the first in 1806 and the last in 1812. Nancy died in 1813. I believe Nancy must have been a decendent of John Doddridge who setteled in Washington PA in 1773 but I have been unable to establish the exact connection. Can any one help?
