oops. Thomas and Elijah are together in the 1870 Sevier TN census with the last name Dodgins. In the 1880 census they are listed as Elisha dogens, Elisha (Elijah) Dogen along with their nephew's widow Margaret Dogens.

From the best sources I have found, Elijah and Elisha were the youngest sons of Amos Dodgen. Amos was your William's(abt 1765) brother. Elisha and Elijah are both found in the Sevier, TN 1880 census along with their brother Thomas. Elijah's name is misspelled (or spelled as spoken) Elisha.

I too would like to know about their parents, grandparents, etc. I remember seeing the names Elijah and Elisha (didn't occur to me that those were different people, though) back in the 80s, when I was researching my Dodgions. William Alexander Dodgion (b. 1810 in Newberry, SC), son of William Dodgion, grandson of William Dodgen and Elizabeth Pitts, is my gg grandfather. He lived in western N.C., migrating out to Kansas after the Civil War. If anybody knows how Elijah and Elisha are related to my family, I would love to know that.

I am a decendant of the Dodgen Family. My grandparents were Albert and Lilly Dodgen. They lived most of their lives in Santa Anna, Texas. They had three children, Joseph Blake, Thelma, and Buford. I am the daughter of Thelma. Buford is the only living child. This morning I received a call from him asking for information on his Grandfather, Augustus Blake Dodgen who was born in 1857 and died in 1930. He is interested in military history for his father and Dodgen's in the Civil War. In going through history left to me by my Mother, I found a letter from Cal and Nita Dodgen about a family reunion to be held in Arlington, Texas in 1981. Also mentioned was a book being written by Mary Dodgen Few ....The Dodgen Story. I would love to have a copy of this book. I have researched the internet trying to locate a copy and have been unsuccessful. If anyone knows how I could find a copy of this book, I would appreciate it.

Sandra Youree

Hi Cam,

I have read thru the info that you sent me and you are correct it does say James Miles and that they had Ira, Winnie Lou, and Nancy. I just got a e-mail from someone else with info though and I am still trying to figure it all out. Someone just filled me in that Samantha Cox- Miles's wife's middle name was Elizabeth and she went by Eliza. So that threw us off some. She is listed in the book by Jim Bob Tinsley,
The Land of Waterfalls ..." here is
the following on page 32: "Mysteriously perished in
the fireplace at her home. A Coroner's jury held an
inquest over the body of the victim at the residence
on 22 Jan 1879, and found that the "deceased Eliza
Dodgen came to her death by falling into the fire from
some unknown cause and burnt to death."" Her grave is
on the ridge east of Stairway Falls on Horse Pasture
River.
I haven't seen the book or copy yet, someone sent this to me and I just pasted and copied it for you to see.
I didn't know that and also the lady that contacted me filled me in some on Miles too, this is something she wrote on him :I do have that Miles Dodgen
remarried to a Laura Estelle Myers, but no other info
other than that on her. So this is new and imcoming info coming in and I am waiting to hear more. You both have helped me so much in the family tree and I want to thank you again for the info. I will ofcourse let you know more when I find out more. I am also about to e-mail you.
Re: Matilda Dodgen Patterson, NC

Hi Carol!
I finally found my rootsweb password so I could respond on this board to you. I receive the Dodgen rootsweb list digests and you had posted about Wesley and Matilda Dodgen Patterson. Below is the response I made to the Dodgen-L rootsweb list:

Hi Carol!
Finally, a descendant of Herren Patterson!!! I hope you get this as I don't remember my rootsweb user id/password to post to the rootsweb board. (Could someone post this to the Dodgen board on rootsweb? I only get the Dodgen digest from the list. Wesley Patterson was ??. Matilda Dodgen presents another problem. Do you have a date of death on her out in Polk Co, AR? If so, there may be a death certificate as I don't find her after 1910 in Polk Co, AR. Herren Patterson was the son of West Patterson and Frances Moore(?)-not proven to be a Moore, oral history. West and Frances are my ggg-grandparents. I descend from their son, Asa Patterson. Asa married Ellenor Nix who was the daughter of William B. Nix and Rebecca Murphree-also a daughter of Moses Murphree. So, your husband and I connect on 2 lines.

Just this morning, a yDNA 67 marker test was ordered for a 91 year old descendant of West Patterson's son, John Bird Patterson (md. Melinda Bracken.) We are excited about this as it may help shed more light on our Patterson lineage. We have been looking for a descendant of Herren Patterson to test as well. It is cost-prohibitive, though. We did find one to test for Asa's branch, but have not contacted him as of yet. There seems to be Indian blood in this Patterson line, but whether it comes from the Patterson line or the supposed Moore line, we do not know. West and Frances are both supposed to be Indian. From Selena Patterson Galloway's Guion Miller Application (have copy), West's mother was Nancy Bird. Selena was Asa Patterson's daughter. From Frankey Stuart Thomas' Guion Miller Roll application, an affidavit said that Frances Moore(?) Patterson looked to be about half Indian and always told this person that she was Indian. Frankey was the daughter of
West's daughter, Nancy Patterson Stuart/Stewart. My great-grandmother's picture (Eveline Patterson Chappell-dau of Asa) really looks Indian in her pictures as did my grandmother, Luner Chappell Cantrell.

There were several Dodgen families in the present day Transylvania Co, NC/Pickens and Oconee Counties, SC. I have never been able to figure out which one that Matilda fit into. Several of the Dodgen's married into my family lines. An Amos Dyer Dodgen-son of William "Billy" Dodgen and Annie Crowe-named a daughter Mattie Argenta Dodgen. I have often wondered if she was named for Matilda A. Dodgen Patterson. Amos married my ggg-aunt, Zelia Ann Gantt. They moved out to Saline Co, AR around 1867/68. I have some Dodgen info as it relates to my other families, though. I'd like to link Matilda to whomever her parents are. Several candidates in the area in that time frame.

There are several good Dodgen researchers researching the family from this area. Audrey Dodgen is one of them. She may be able to help you on that line. I could send you what I have. Some of the Dodgen's I don't have linked back to Amos Dodgen who settled in the present day Transylvania Co, NC area. This area is along the state line of SC-NC. I'm not sure where the land was, but probably in what is now known as Old Toxaway down towards the Cane Brake where the Patterson's were located. Amos Dodgen was the son of William Dodgen and Elizabeth Pitts from what I can determine. William, and presumably Elizabeth, also were in Buncombe Co, NC (present day Transylvania.) They came up from Newberry Co, SC to NC. I don't have Elizabeth Pitts parents in my database, but you can probably google her name "Elizabeth Pitts" +Dodgen and find that out.

Please feel free to email me at: pacant1104@yahoo.com if you would like to discuss this family more.

I am also looking for a copy of "The Dodgen Story," which I read parts of at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond several years ago. Mrs. Few was writing it at a time when I was researching the family in North Carolina, but she uncovered a lot more early history than I had. (My great grandfather was Gus [Buckingham Augustus] Dodgion, born in Macon or Clay County, NC; died in Louisville, Kansas in 1911. His father, William Alexander Dodgion, was born in Newberry, SC, also died and is buried at Louisville.)

I am wondering whether there might not be enough people out there interested in the book to support a second small printing, if there aren't enough "extra" copies to go around?

Susan Collender

I hope you're still out there, I guess I haven't seen this posting before.

According to "A Summary of The Descendants of William Dogins, Sr. of Newberry Co., South Carolina by Allen Cox and Cal and Juanita Dodgen (1984) page 64:
James C (born 1850) married Mary (born 1940) and had William Riley, Laura, James Amos, Alfred Keith, and Mary C.

If this is the right family, his dad was William (Billie) born 1808. Billie had two wives, Anna (1812) and Hesterann Aiken (1854). Does this sound right to you?
