Hi Sydney

I am excited too at finding a living descendant of William and Maria. I only too up the quest looking for them in Sept when I found out from another contact that the family had emigrated and I was due to come to Nova Scotia on holiday. The local library there was helpful, but could not get me many records, only snippets here and there. I have contacted another Ancestry member who was related to Peter Dodsworth born (1840)and he gave me a valuable insight into the family.

The HOLDERNESS family was in Fangfoss for many generations and I have been trying to trace where my Thomas (1833-1927)fitted into the picture. He said on the census' he was born in Scotland, which gave me a dead end for 15 years. Then another family member contacted me and suggested his father was John HOLDERNESS (1770-1805) and his mother was Jane Deall (who remarried Archibald Campbell) who was living next door to Thomas in Fangfoss in 1851!

Where do I start?

John HOLDERNESS (1770-1805) was a soldier in the 3rd Dragoon Guards and married Jane Deall (1780) at St Martins Church Salisbury, Wiltshire on 25th Dec 1798. They must have travelled together during some of his postings and he was stationed in Scotland around the time Thomas was born. John died in Ireland in 28 Oct 1805. Jane must have been preganant with their son John at the time. Their family was as follows:-

MARIA (born c1802) in Salisbury, we think. Who married William Dodsworth in Catton, East Yorks on 4th Dec 1826. They went on to have the children you know about (John, William, Mary, Thomas, Peter and Elizabeth) but I know there were 2 others not mentioned on the "Sea", Jane (1834) and a twin to Mary (1835) called James. I cannot find deaths for them before the family sailed in 1847. Also if you look on the ships record there is another name below Maria's which looks like Letitia aged 8. Have you come across her? She is not on the 1841 census in England or on the 1851 in Canada.

ELIZABETH, born 1804 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. She went on to have a daughter, Caroline in 1825 (out of wedlock) and then married Frederick Hopwood in Pocklington, East Yorks on 27 April, 1826.

THOMAS, born Scotland about 1805, who married Esther Atkinson on 21 Jan 1830 at Fangfoss. They went on to have 6 children George (1830-1892), Ann (1832), John(1835-1859), William(1837) James (1839) and lastly my Gt Grandmother Jane (1841-post 1901). This makes Maria her Aunt and Your Thomas her cousin.

JOHN born 11 Apr 1806 (ie after his father died) in Salisbury, Wiltshire who married Jane Owston at Patrick Brompton in 1826 and went on to have 13 children and lived at Brompton-by-Sawdon, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

After John died in 1805, Jane HOLDERNESS (nee Deall) remarried Archibald Campbell on 23rd Nov 1812 in Fangfoss. So it looks like she went back to live in John's home village of Fangfoss rather than staying in Salisbury, Wiltshire with her own family. They went on to have five more children (ie. step-brothers and step-sisters to our relatives). Oddly one of them Miles Cambell also came to Canada in 1851!

So you will see that Maria Dodsworth (1802-1882) left lots of relatives over here!

My connection is that Jane HOLDERNESS (1841) married Thomas DALES, my Gt Grandfather and DALES was my maiden name.

I will stop for now other wise I will bore you rigid. I will give you my direct e-mail as I am sure we will be in touch again soon. Its

Best wishes for the New Year, Pam.
