Benjamin Dodsworth

I am looking for information on Benjamin Dodsworth, MD, who seems to have been born 1814 in Portsea, Hampshire, England. From there he went to Colombo Ceylon (when?), got married to Jane Eliza Walbeoff, had children, widowed. Upon return to UK, he spend his later years on the Channel Island, where he re married (Harriett Le Rossignol) and had another daughter. I know most of his live after arrival to Ceylon, but I have not much luck about earlier years, including date of birth etc.

His parents are Benjamin Dodsworth, third son of Ralph Dodsworth from York, and Catherine de Mayne, daughter of Anthony de Mayne. For both lines I still need some further information.

Thanks to anyone who could help
Carlos

Dodsworth Family Bible from 1778 available

May be interesting for someone out there: I found a Dodsworth Family Bible from 1778 available at a book store in New York. Some names are: Ralph Dodsworth son of Ralph in the county of Yorkshire. He married Elizabeth Walter d. 1811 a daughter of John and Mary Walter in 1789. Their son John was born 1790-1831. The the second son Ralph 1792. A daughter Elizabeth 1792. This is only a side line for my tree, so I am not really interested. Any of you? It is for sale at US$ 850 at that book store, I can forward the adress to anyone interested. cagima64@hotmail.com

I think I can help you with Elizabeth as I've been researching Dodsworths for a while now.

I think that the parents of your Elizabeth Dodsworth were William and Mary Leefe. Her siblings were Ann(1864), Thomas(1865), William(1868-1868), Edward(1869-1870), Mary(1871), Harry(1873-1873), John(1874-1874), Alfred(1881) and Jane(1884) - alias Jenny, all born in the Malton area.

I also believe her fathers parents were Thomas Dodsworth and Jane Ruddock and her paternal g/parents Thomas Dodsworth and Frances Coultas.

Hope this helps you to move forward.

David

Their children were Ann (1806), Ann (1807), Sally (1808), Richard (1809), Jane (1811), Sarah (1814), Coultas (1816), Thomas (1819) as mentioned above, Martin (1821), William (1824), James (1827) and Frances (1829).

David

Re: William and Maria (formerly Holderness) DODSWORTH 1800-1890's Fangfoss, East Yorkshire to Gore, Ontario

Hi Sydney

I am excited too at finding a living descendant of William and Maria. I only too up the quest looking for them in Sept when I found out from another contact that the family had emigrated and I was due to come to Nova Scotia on holiday. The local library there was helpful, but could not get me many records, only snippets here and there. I have contacted another Ancestry member who was related to Peter Dodsworth born (1840)and he gave me a valuable insight into the family.

The HOLDERNESS family was in Fangfoss for many generations and I have been trying to trace where my Thomas (1833-1927)fitted into the picture. He said on the census' he was born in Scotland, which gave me a dead end for 15 years. Then another family member contacted me and suggested his father was John Holderness (1770-1805) and his mother was Jane Deall (who remarried Archibald Campbell) who was living next door to Thomas in Fangfoss in 1851!

Where do I start?

John Holderness (1770-1805) was a soldier in the 3rd Dragoon Guards and married Jane Deall (1780) at St Martins Church Salisbury, Wiltshire on 25th Dec 1798. They must have travelled together during some of his postings and he was stationed in Scotland around the time Thomas was born. John died in Ireland in 28 Oct 1805. Jane must have been preganant with their son John at the time. Their family was as follows:-

MARIA (born c1802) in Salisbury, we think. Who married William DODSWORTH in Catton, East Yorks on 4th Dec 1826. They went on to have the children you know about (John, William, Mary, Thomas, Peter and Elizabeth) but I know there were 2 others not mentioned on the "Sea", Jane (1834) and a twin to Mary (1835) called James. I cannot find deaths for them before the family sailed in 1847. Also if you look on the ships record there is another name below Maria's which looks like Letitia aged 8. Have you come across her? She is not on the 1841 census in England or on the 1851 in Canada.

ELIZABETH, born 1804 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. She went on to have a daughter, Caroline in 1825 (out of wedlock) and then married Frederick Hopwood in Pocklington, East Yorks on 27 April, 1826.

THOMAS, born Scotland about 1805, who married Esther Atkinson on 21 Jan 1830 at Fangfoss. They went on to have 6 children George (1830-1892), Ann (1832), John(1835-1859), William(1837) James (1839) and lastly my Gt Grandmother Jane (1841-post 1901). This makes Maria her Aunt and Your Thomas her cousin.

JOHN born 11 Apr 1806 (ie after his father died) in Salisbury, WIltshire who married Jane Owston at Patrick Brompton in 1826 and went on to have 13 children and lived at Brompton-by-Sawdon, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

After John died in 1805, Jane Holderness (nee Deall) remarried Archibald Campbell on 23rd Nov 1812 in Fangfoss. So it looks like she went back to live in John's home village of Fangfoss rather than staying in Salisbury, Wiltshire with her own family. They went on to have five more children (ie. step-brothers and step-sisters to our relatives). Oddly one of them Miles Cambell also came to Canada in 1851!

So you will see that Maria Dodsworth (1802-1882) left lots of relatives over here!

My connection is that Jane Holderness (1841) married Thomas DALES, my Gt Grandfather and Dales was my maiden name.

I will stop for now other wise I will bore you rigid. I will give you my direct e-mail as I am sure we will be in touch again soon. Its
pam@pmgodfrey.karoo.co.uk.

Best wishes for the New Year, Pam.

This is so exciting - how am I to go about my daily business? I have almost complete details about William and Maria and their son Thomas in Canada. I am also just beginning to get details on Mary Morritt (not Morrill), whom Thomas married fairly late. Because of laws in this country to protect individuals, I have still not found details about family deaths, etc... but am working on it. It was very helpful to learn the date of Maria's death. I too have the Ship "Sea"s manifest info.

I believe William and Maria farmed in Ontario in what is now the huge metropolis of Toronto. However, Thomas may have moved his family to Manitoba (the next province) - or at least his own son Thomas Lloyd was there as a teenager and joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in WWII in 1915. Thomas Lloyd was my maternal grandfather. My mother says that her grandfather Thomas died when her father Thomas Lloyd was 3. However I have found a death record for Thomas dated 1912, which would be when THomas Lloyd was 13. Something to check into more.

I have only just begun this. I have only one record, the death record for Thomas - which states his mother's maiden name being Holderness... the only tie I have to your information - so would love to hear from you more about this!

Take care... we will touch base fairly regularly - I too am in and out of the country over the next couple of months.

Sydney (and I am a female, in case you wondered!)

Hi. I think we may have a connection if your ancestor Thomas Dodsworth married (as his second wife) Mary Morrill in Toronto on 9 March 1892. It looks promising as the children you name Frank A (1892) Ellen (1894) and Thomas L (1899?) are with them on the 1901 Canadian census. I don't know when Thomas died.

I am tracking the path of William Dodsworth and his wife Maria (nee Holderness) as they emigrated to Ontario (Gore) from Fangfoss, East Yorkshire, England (very near where I live). Maria was my Gt Gt Grandfather Thomas Holderness' sister. I am in the unusual position for family history in that I am trying to go forward in time not back.

William and Maria's family (including son Thomas) are on the 1841 UK Census in Fangfoss and in 1851 Canadian census in Gore. By 1881 Canadian census Maria is living with her son Thomas (and his first wife Maryan, and their 7 children) in Albion, Cardwell, Ontario. Maria died on the 12 April, 1882 aged 79.

Please stay in touch. You are the first direct descendant of Thomas I have found. I can tell a lot about the Holderness family of Fangfoss but sadly nothing about William Dodsworth's family. I am away in Spain from 10th Jan 2008 to 29th Feb so do not worry if you do not hear back from me. Regards, Pam.

PS. I have seen the copy original ship's register for the "Sea" and their eldest son John is with them. He died 22 Sept 1876.

I can trace records to Pocklington, Yorkshire. I note that Fangfoss is hear Harthill, Wilton Beacon, near Pocklington, Yorkshire, but have no idea why anyone know that the family is from there in particular.

Further to my message above, I do now have a possible age/date of birth for my William DODSWORTH, from an arrival into NZ from Victoria, Australia in 1876, aged 36. No record has been located of him arriving into Australia, but as he was a miner in 1876 it's probable that the Bendigo or Ballarat area gold-fields is where he was based.

If anyone has a English DODSWORTH Family Tree that has a William b. ca 1840, who may not be found on the 1871 Census and who definitely can't be found on 1881 or 1891 Census......... please can I have him? <vbg>

Hello John,

I have been retracing the same Dodsworth family in my
husband's line. A Thomas Dodsworth born in 1801 West
Witton, No. Yorkshire to Thomas Dodsworth and Margaret
Kitching. Thomas (1801) came to Cumberland Co. N.S.
about 1820. A brother, Marmaduke born 1797 married and
father of 7 later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio area about 1830
and married again and had several more children.

A Bob Dodsworth in North Allerton, Eng. sent me information
and a web site for Thornton Watlass Hall.

www.dodsworth.demon.co.uk/home.html
Looking forward to hearing from you,

Colene Dodsworth

Hi Peter,

I have been researching my husband's Dodsworth line for
several years. I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to
as Site info. Are you referring to info on Ancestry.com?
My husband's first ancestor to North America came to
Cumberland County, Nova Scotia about 1819-20. His name
was Thomas Dodsworth and he was born in West Witton,
North Yorkshire, Eng. in 1801. His brother, Marmaduke was
born in 1793 and after having a family in that area, came to
Cincinnati, Ohio area about 1830, married again and had more
children. I would be interested in knowing if there is any
relationship to your family. Contact me at email address above.

Colene Dodsworthl
Hello,
The Dodsworth's I am searching came from Canada place unknown via Wells County North Dakota. Thomas Dodsworth was born Nov.25th 1855. He married Alta Butts about 1867 in North Dakota and came to Washington State Yakima County between 1905 and 1908. He died Sept 24th 1932 in Yakima Co. Alta died in 1938. She was born in Minnesota.
The family says Thomas Dodsworth's father was John Dodsworth, but I have no information on him.
I have discovered some Dodsworth's in the Bellingham area Whatcom Co, and also some in Spokane Spokane Co. WA.., but don't know if they connect to the Yakima Dodsworths.
This Dodsworth family is my son-in-laws His grandfather, son of Thomas, was Milton Daniel Dodsworth b. Oct 21,1898 in North Dakota. His father was Bueford Dodsworth b. 1922 in Yakima Co.
Thomas and Alta were said to have had 11 children but only seven were living on the 1910 census.
Have no idea if this family might connect with yours...
I have seen the George who came from England to Delaware and then to PA and Hancock Illinois. Were they possibly Quakers to begin with and then perhaps Mormons, as I have seen that patter in my brother-in-laws family who also were of New Castle Del.and then Illinois etc.
Hi. I am researching Thomas Dodsworth of Gore, Ontario, whose parents were William and Marie. My research leads me to their arrival on the Ship "Sea" arriving New York in 1847. The ship's manifest includes William and Maria, and their children William (c1833), Mary (c1836), Thomas(c1837), and Elizabeth and Peter (c1840). These names all appear identically in the Gore District 1851 Census of Ontario. My list matches yours almost identically except that you have included a John (c1830) and not William.

I am interested specifically in Thomas, who remarried in 1892 and had three more children (my ancestors) - Frank (c1893), Ellen (c1894), and Thomas L (c1899), all born in Ontario. Apparently Thomas died when Thomas L was 3 years old. How did you discover Fangfoss as the starting point?

Yes, we have a common ancestor, William was the son of John Dodsworth and Ann. He worked on farms, as servant, later becoming a carter, gradually moving towards Co Durham from Yorkshire through the years.

Hi Coleen,

I think your Elizabeth was the daughter of John Dodsworth and Harriet Coulson who were married 1 Apr 1847 in Metheringham. She was the eldest and her siblings were Caroline, William, Ruth, John, Joseph, Coulson and David.

Her father John was the son of Joseph Dodsworth and Caroline Smith and Joseph's parents were Thomas Dodsworth and Ruth Bellamy who married 5 Mar 1793 in Kyme.

My g-g-grandfather, Patrick Burke and his sons worked at the Dodsworth Distillery in Cincinnati, Ohio. I believe we are talking about the same family.

We are researching JEREMIAH DODSWORTH, my ggrandfather. He came to Washington in the 1870's, his immediate family was from Ohio, they came from Delaware.
I have not run into information on any other Dodsworths here, unless they are later, after the 1920's. I can barely find anything on this family.
A. Kidd

Dodsworths in Brazil

Hello all you Dodsworths. Have any of you had the chance to explore the Dodsworths in Brazil? George Dodsworth, a sailor, (who I think is one of mine) jumped ship and went there in the first half of the 19th century. All his subsequent descendants are detailed on various Brazilian web pages but I wondered if anyone knows where in the UK he came from.

Maxw
