DODWELL family name

I have a name in my tree, DOKEWELL. There is no other instance of this anywhere that I can find so it must be something else. Hannah DOKEWELL m Anthony HALE in Bledington, Glos, 1716. Anthony was from Kingham, Oxon, just next door.

Could she have been a DODWELL? I don't know where she came from but they stayed in Kingham so I presume she was local to Oxon. Anyone out there know her?

I have just embarked on investigating my husband's ancestry. His family originates from the Manor House at Boarstall with g grandfather = Edmund Brangwin Dodwell. I believe if we go back another 5 generations we get to Thomas and Sarah. Would love to learn more.

Anyone connected with this genealogy - first mention in Long Crendon appears to be in the 1667 Long Crendon parish register entry (Buckinghamshire, England). Many Dodwells connected with Long Crendon Baptist church. Family has no known connection (but it is possible) with Dodwells of Gloucestershire & Worcestershhire. I am living in Canada.

Kathy - several Charles' and Walters here but none that are an obvious fit with yours. Unless you are sure of a Bucks connection your Dodwells could belong to the Gloucestershire clan - which may or may not be related to my own.
DODWELL

Kathy - I don't have any Charles Dodwell d.1928. Actually I have few Dodwells as recent as 1928, certainly no Charles, and the others are all otherwise accounted for. Plenty I don't know about yet though, or Charles and Walter could stem from the Cheltenham Dodwells who may or may not be related to the Bucks Dodwells. If you know the date of Charles Dodwell's death (1928) couldn't you obtain a death certificate from the GRO - this would at least give age (thus approx birthdate for finding birth cert. giving parents incl maiden name of mother and occupation of father). The death cert also gives rank or profession of the deceased and it names the informant (usually a family member). This should all give you a line on who he was and likely a link with your family's English lineage. Both Bucks and Gloucestershire Dodwells have extensive established trees - My Mother was a Dodwell and her tree contains 315 Dodwell names to date. A Dodwell of Oxford (city) graduated from Oxford University in 1567 (Rector), and Richard of Oxford (city) in 1708 (Barrister), so there is an established connection with the name and and the place.
If you want to discuss further Kathy by all means Email me at: shipshaper@hotmail.com
Tony

Ron:

Not that I am aware of...my Dodwells are pretty much entrenched in Shrewsbury until around 1900, when suddenly there are a few in Bordesly, South Birmingham and one in Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, North Wales. A couple left for America in the 1880's, but the rest stayed in the Shrewsbury vicinity. There most certainly were relatives of this bunch sprinkled about the country, but I have yet to connect them. Sorry. Randy

Stuart,
my name is madeleine. I have recently been lookin for my ancestors on my dads side of the family who's name is john Fitzsimmons. We trying to find information on his father who was also called John Fitzsimmons born in 1901 - Ireland. I came across your message and although you claim your John is different i was wondering how you found such correct information on my grandmother Ivy Dodwell-Bennet who married John in 1940 or round about then. Her father was the Baptist Minister you mentioned in your message - Frank Dodwell-Bennet. My father and i would be very greatful if you could get back to us as soon as you can with any information that may help! thanks

Dodwells in Shropshire (1800's)

I am researching the following Dodwell family from the Shrewsbury area:
William Dodwell (b. 1820, d. 1877), married in 1842 to Jemima Wilde (b. 1823)
Children: Emily (b. 1843), Harriette (b. 1845), Mary Jane (b. 1848), George (b. 1850), Charlotte (b. 1852), Agnes (b. 1856), Frederick (b. 1860), Alfred (b. 1863) & Henry (b. 1864).

William was a plumber by trade; his eldest son George later took over the business, which by the late 1880's - 1890's had become a large heating engineering company, located at St. Julian Friars & Beeches Lane in Shrewsbury. Frederick (my g-grandfather) came to America in 1884, settling in Poplar Bluff, Mo., marrying Etta Turner. Agnes marries a Charles Boore, and for a number of years resided at 3 Granville Place, Copthorne Road, Shrewsbury. Also, I believe that William's parents were John & Elizabeth Dodwell of Shrewsbury.

The family was affiliated (at various times) with the following parishes: St. Mary's, St. Alkmund's, St. Julian's, St. Chad's.

If any of this rings a bell, please contact me. I have lots more info and some photos, and would like to glean much more info from someone with family knowlege, or knowlege of the Dodwell business.

Thanks. Randy

Sadly your John and mine are not the same one. I have since uncovered the truth about my John...and his bigamous marriage...his prison stretch...and my surprise new uncle!! Quite a tale it turned out to be, but I do thank you sincerely for taking the time to reply, these searches are difficult at the best of times.
Stuart

Dear All,
I'm trying to find details of the Dodwell family decended from Thomas Dodwell (d 1695) of Long Credon. My grandfather was Reginald Power Dodwell, great-grandfather Wilfred Syms Dodwell. I've got a family tree which has the birth dates of most people in the direct tree, but few details of occupations, mariages or deaths. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Matthew

We are some of what is left of the Dodwells of Long Crendon, living in Thame (2 miles from Long Crendon) and I know my father and brother have some information from their attempts at tracing the family history. If anyone wants to get in touch with me please do so and I will put you in touch with my father.

Hi there Caroline,
I did send some info back to you in 2003, I don't now if that was of any help? Have changed e-mail adresses so may have missed some items. However I have now taken up the Family tree again.
Your Amos could have been my Great Great Granfather William's brother as the birth date of c.1824 is similar. I would be interested to find out any more details and check it is the same person. All I have at the moment is born c.1824 Long Crendon and died I belive 27 Nov 1908?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Philip
