I am the gr gr grand daughter of Thomas Doe who was an American Indian and lived in Barnwell S.C he was born March 10 1886 he had a wife Rebecca and his father and mothers names were Thomas Doe and Barbara Chavera (or Rennels) They too were American Indian.

My William ( 1812 - 1876 )has children John William, Henry, Richard, Eliza, Amelia , William, Elizabeth and Emma but no Mary A. The coincidence is that my mother was Mary Ann Doe nee Turner. But here it seems that the possible connection ends ! Many thanks for your reply. One more possibilty, do you have any links back to William Doe, born c.1775, Rickinghall Inferior, Suffolk ?

Hi, I have a William Doe 1811 - 1876 but married to a Deborah Jacobs. My William was born in Steeple Bumpstead, Essex and had 8 children. Is this purely coincidence or does one of us have an incorrect spouse ? Or maybe a second marriage ??

This lady is my Aunt. She was born around 1900. In approx 1918 she married a Canadian soldier (in UK fighting in WW1) and returned to Canada or the United States. Her husbands name was Waverley Cameron Macpherson. As far as I am aware she died childless at quite a young age of peritonitus. Can anyone help with any information.

Does any one have information on Eliza Squibb. I have a copy of her marriage certificate which was the 16th November 1889. She was 18 at the time. She married a James Bawn. The relevant pages for her birth seem to be missing in the transcripts. They married in the parish of Newington so presumably they come from the London area.

We have the same Roots. My Grandmother was the last of the Does lineage and her sister Ruby.

I also am from Sampson Doe, .There is a book written, as follows:

Apologies for hijacking your thread!

I am in the early stages of researching my husband's family, and have found that he is a direct descendant of Nehemiah and Ruth. My information so far has been gleaned from census information so I don't have a lot of details at the moment, but I'm happy to help if I can. At present I am trying to untangle the various marriage lines (several cases of cousins marrying cousins!) and trying to trace children who never appear to have been formally registered.

Hi, basically I reached a stalemate because my direct descendants through my Dad were known as Doe although they never actually married! It seems my great gran - granny Crockett. aka Anne-Selina Doe was really an Ayres because they did not apparently reckon much on wsddings. Anne-Selina died in her eighties in about 1967ish as I recall, in Molesey in Surrey where she had lived surrounded by her large family. Her sons were Joseph Christopher Noel (my grandad), Cornelius aka Naylor, Francis, John and daughters Brittania and Violet. There are very few of us left here now. I don't even know where she was born or even where my grandad was born because he was never one to speak of his tough childhood, except that he worked as a horsetrader during the 1st WW and was too old for the 2ndWW. All we know is that he was born Christmas Day 1890s in a stable at a grand estate somewhere, named by the lady of the house who believed he was a special gift from God - hence his list of names! |He was the most wonderful man though) As I said, I got nowhere woith the research because Granny Crockett did not marry officially, her children were not actually registered and anyone who would know these details has long since passed away, my only hope is that when another batch of census' are released that there may be some details concerning Grandad on them and I might get a little further in finding my roots. It would be nice to find I has family out there still- who knows it could be your wife and me?? (I was Doe till I married - suppose I still am underneath.)

I have not tried the Tree yet, chiefly because I am useless with computers but also because its such a tangle sorting through the relatives on database! My great gran did not bother to register most of her children, or get married it seems, (confirming what my grandad said that he raised most of her eleven children himself)- yet its interesting to note that g.g.grandad Nehemiah also had 11 kids. There are so many gaping holes in the story because of Granny Crockett's dislike of beaurocracy, a trait my Dad has inherited from her too. Where are you by the way?

Yes, I foundGeorge T. Doe (b 1889) in the Descendants of Nicholas Doe book. Have you been in touch with Jeanne Thurber yet? She has quite a database of Does. My mother is Priscilla Doe, daughter of Harry Gordon Doe (b.1890).

I can trace my tree back to the marraige of Henry Doe,born1820, and Elizabeth Gritt born1821and Francis Doe born abt 1778 and Amelia Early born abt1779.

Hello Michael, Yes I am still searching about but its all a bit vague because my own great-gran Anne-Selina (one of Nehemia & Ruth's daughters) never actually married the father of her kids, so there is a whole new side out there that I cannot find. My Dad says Granny Crockett was an Ayres - probably he was the father of her children - but the children all had her surname rather than his. This new name is feasible because as is the Romany way, extended familes lived closely in tight knit communities, "married" amongst themselves and on one of the sheets I had there is an Ayres family living in the same encampment. It does fit. One thing hit me with a bump was the fact Doe comes from a French name and I have a French surname on my mother's side too. My husband and I own a farmhouse in Normandy where we are going to live when we have finished renovations so maybe I am going home at last? I know its precisely the place my Grandad would have loved too. regards to you!

Thankyou Michael. We do not anticipate moving to our house for perhaps 18months when our daughter finishes her apprenticeship and becomes (allegedly!) independent of us, if that ever happens of course! Anyway we are going out there for Christmas which we are much looking forward to. Its strange that even before I found out Grandad's family has French heritage, even when we were just house-hunting in the Orne region and drifting through unspoilt hamlets, there were occasions when I swear I saw my Grandad cycling down a lane on his bike - complete with his trademark black beret! Of course he has been dead 35 years now so it definately was not him, unless it was his way of showing me where I shall spend my days. Very strange. Anyway I will keep in touch, and who knows, maybe one day we can have a colossal Doe reunion to see how far the web stretches? A bientot! Moya Doe (as I was of course).

I hit a total stalemate with tracing my great-gran Anne-selina Doe. From what I gathered she was not the Anne-selina I found on the site and indeed my father says her maiden name was Ayres (even though she used Doe despite not being married to Joseph, as was typical Romany practice.) However I am of the opinion that it is possible we are from the same stock as it were, both being from Surrey (my family settled in Molesey), and of course knowing how new relationships were often made from the wider family groups! My grandfather and his siblings broke with tradition really as they all married non-Romany partners, although Anne-Selina was quite radical in her time as she lived in a bungalow built by her sons rather than a caravan. I remember her when I was a small child - I was her first great-grandchild - as a bit of a tyrant who ruled her kids with a rod of iron yet was soft as butter underneath it all - a feisty old girl who insisted on cooking on an open fire in the garden up until her death in about 1964. The names you gave don't ring any immediate bells but if you find Anne-Selina (my Granny Crockett) or Joseph Christopher Noel (my grandad), or Cornelius (known as Naylor), John, Violet or Brittania - well thats my branch of the Doe tree. My Dad has no contact with any of his assorted cousins now which is sad but we would love to see if we have any distant rellies out there searching for us. Happy hunting regardless! Moya

MARSHALL E. DOE OF PHILIPSBURG PASSES
Philipsburg, Oct. 14.---(Special)---Marshall E. Doe, prominent druggist of Philipsburg [Granite County] passed away at his home here at 6:30 this morning. Mr. Doe became ill while working in his drug store Wednesday forenoon and had only been confined to his bed since that time.

Mr. Doe, who was 71 years of age, had been a business man of Philipsburg for many years. He had been active in civic movements and was a member of several fraternal and social lodges. He was well known, not only in Philipsburg but throughout the entire district and news of his death was received with sorrow today.

Mr. Doe is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. L.W. Maxson, and two sons, Everett and Milton Doe. Milton, who has been attending a pharmacist school in St. Louis, was en route home at the time of his father's death.

Funeral services will be held from the family residence Monday afternoon, if Milton Doe has arrived home by that time.
