Hi,

I am not replying about the person you are trying to document. But my family settled in the late 1700s I am lead to believe they were Flemish but not sure. I am also lead to believe they then went to High Wycombe because they need work. Because you have the same name, would you have any recollection?? If you do not, I understand and sorry to contact you.

Miss Doel

Suzanne2812:
I believe the person you are looking for is my fathers dad; my grandfather.
He did indeed marry in London to Violet Doel. They came to the US in about 1910-1912. Then, the story goes, that when my dad was 9 months old, William went back to London, as his dad was ill. He was never heard from again. My dad was told this story by his mom. We alwasy suspected it. I went to London several years ago and have copies of the original Doel marraige, death, birth certificates. Please call me.

Hi

I hope someone can help.

My great great Uncle was unknown to his family. He was born William Doel in 1885 Salisbury UK.

In 1910 he went to America & became a butler for a golf club owner in Pensylvannia. Sometime after this he returned home to the UK.

In 1913 he married Violet Dorothy Swain b1888 London UK. Within weeks they departed again for America never to return. Dorothy as she was know became a US citizen & possibly died in 1976 in Pittsburgh, but there is also a record of a Dorothy Doel marrying in the 30's/40's.

I'd really like to know if they had children. My grandad is 85, he didn't know of his uncle & denies he even exists even though I have all this evidence. I'm wondering is William was disowned.

Regards Suzanne

Thats as far as i have gone back as of yet, mostly due to a tree on ancestry site which gave me a flying start,Ithink one would have to go deeper into the parish records if they exist or even the bishops transcripts.I'am decended from James Doel brother of your John,James married Ann Everett whose son William joined the royal marines light infantry and served 25 years then retired to Salisbury in the 1860'shis son Joseph Henry was the father of my grandmother Ada Victoria Doel.Hopes this helps.
Phil Read.

Re: Ethel Mary Doel

Hello, I just came across this site having just installed internet. My grandmother was called Ethel Mary Doel married on 14.10.1916 in Forton Hants and died on 15.3.1963. I don't have her dob. Married to Reginald Harry Luscombe B.13.1.1895. died 27.3.1974. Reginald Harry was number six of nine children born to a Plymouth publican. He left home at fifteen years of age to join the Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Garrison Artillery) as a boy soldier, primarily committing himself to a period of twelve years service. Four years into his service he and his comrades formed the British Expeditionary Force which travelled to France and Flanders in August 1914. He was one of around 80,000 troops who were sent to strengthen the decimated Belgian Army in the north around the town of Mons, and moved into position along a twenty-one mile front to the left of the French Army. Unfortunately some of the units sent were embarrassingly under strength. It was because of the pitiful size of the force that the German leader, Kaiser Wilhelm II, sneeringly dismissed them as a 'contemptible little army' . The fighting around Mons was extremely fearce, and although heavily outnumbered, the contemptible little army held out. Eventually they were forced to withdraw from Mons, and after a gruelling cross-country march were required to hold their ground again and fight at Le Cateau in France. They were then involved in the fighting on the Marne and the Aisne, where their actions prevented the Germans outflanking the French. They also fought at the first battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, preventing a German breakthrough and undoubtedly creating history of the Great War.
All ranks who served in those particular battles were awarded the coveted ‘Mons Star’ and those who were actually under fire or within range of the enemy field artillery were also awarded a ribbon clasp with the dates 4th August - 22nd November 1914, the latter date being the point at which they were relieved by the French Army. Reginald Harry, and the others who received this medal with ribbon clasp, became known from that day forward as the 'Old Contemptibles'.

Unsurprisingly, sometime during the war he was seriously injured receiving a shrapnel wound to his head. He was promptly sent back to England and after a lengthy period of rehabilitation to recover from his injury he was posted to Gosport where he met the girl he fell in love with. He was informed that the surgeons were unable to remove the shrapnel from his skull and there was grave concern as to his survival. At twenty-one years of age and wearing the rank of corporal he married Ethel, a domestic servant. Seventeen months later, eight months before the end of the Great War, Sergeant Reginald Harry Luscombe and Ethel named their first-born ‘Reginald Thomas James Luscombe’. My father. When the war ended he took his family to Plymouth where they set up home close to his father’s pub. His father had lost one of his boys to the war, his youngest eighteen year old son Percy was killed in France, and so he wanted to help support his injured son in a house closeby.
I wonder if that is any help to you.
Regards,
Michael Luscombe
Did you ever find the answer to this query? I have a William Doel baptised in Horningsham (p140) along with my ancester Henry in 1843. 4 of them were baptised together very late - My ancester was born in 1830 and was 13. William was born according to the register on 2nd April 1836. I know that is 10 years later than your request but the Doel dates do seem to be a bit unreliable. William and Henry were both sons of John and Sarah Doel.

Looking for Info on John F. Brady - Married Eileen Helen Doel

I have been researching the Brady family for my good friend whose mother passed away in 1994. She has never known any of her mother's side of the family (the Brady's). I know that the family moved around a lot. I know that they lived in Michigan, California, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Here's (in a nutshell) what I know about the parents and children.

Father = John F. Brady (now deceased)
Mother = Eileen Helen (maiden name = Doel), divorced Brady, remarried, now last name is Kozan and resides in Florida

Children = John F. Brady, Jr. (last known to be in Georgia)
Denise Kathleen (Brady) Davis, Harlan, Ludwig, Crook (my friends mom...deceased 1994)
Janice Eileen Brady (lives in Florida I believe)
Lorna J. (Brady) McChesney (deceased 1990)
Tracy Augusta (Brady) David (also in Florida somewhere)

If anybody has any information or links on this family please help us. We're pretty much at a dead end here.

Thanks!!!!

Hi Pam
Have just picked up your message - William Thomas DOEL was my husband's grandfather's 1st cousin. The Simpson DOEL'S you have picked up are related but our other cousins. I have quite alot of info on the Hampshire DOEL who actually orginated from Wiltshire. Please contact me on tazdoel@aol.com and maybe we can help each other.
Best wishes
Tara

Do you know where they come from?

This may just be a coincidence but I do have a William Doel in my tree. He is brother to my grandmother (there were 13 of them) and although I don't have a birthdate for William 1893 would fit in. The coincidence is that the parents were Arthur Doel and Sarah Ellen Newman. I haven't done much work on the Newmans though and don't have a Hilda anywhere but another brother, Lancelot Doel did marry a cousin on the Doel side! Any connection do you think?
