Obit of Frederick Doescher, wife & sister

Found in “The San Francisco Call”, San Francisco, Calif.,
dated March 11, 1902:

Three Old People Asphyxiated
MOUNT CLEMMONS, Mich., March
10 – Frederick Doescher, aged 86 years,
his wife, aged 72, and his sister, Mrs.
John Frink, aged 60, were asphixated at
their residence sometime between Friday
night and this morning by coal gas. The
women were found dead in their bed,
while Doescher’s body was in a chair be-
hind the stove. He had evidently been
awakened by the gas and been overcome
after he had got up to fix the stove.

In reply to your query, i only have questions. Do you learn anything from the board or surrounding boards? Was the name stenciled on or hand carved or? Could it be from a sea chest or possibly a freight box? My Doescher family came to America in the early 1900s from Germany. One family member, whose first name we don't know, accompanied him. And we know have any idea where he went. The other stayed east. Have you done any census or deed work on the name and area and time frame? al

This is my grandfather's brother. I too am searching for info. If you have found anything, I would be thrilled to hear.

Below is what I have gleaned from "home stories"

Charles was born in Grundy County, Iowa. He left home for the first time when he was 13 years of age, going to Schuyler, NE. It was just a kid trick, because his father had told Henry (his older brother) that when he was Henry's age, he could get along by himself, and Henry answered, "I can too." When Henry left the breakfast table and went upstairs and dressed, his father (Christopher Tonjes) asked Charley if he was gong to leave too, so Charley went upstairs and left.

Charley did farm work at Schuyler. He left in April, coming home in the fall (September), staying until three years later in haying time.

Then Charley went to Kossuth County, working on a farm for Charley Krush. He was there about six years.

Later he farmed for himself for two years. He rented a farm, paying $2 cash and went broke. Then Charley went to the nortnern part of California at Montague, where he boutght lots in the town. From here he traveled south, working, making fruit boxes, apple crates, etc. Then he worked in an apple orchard located just south of Los Angeles. He picked apples during the apple season, and they raised beans between the rows of trees. He helped thresh the beans. He got $3 per day. Finally he went farther south in California, and then came back to Kimball, SD

He stayed there a couple of years, working in partnership with his brother, John. Charley was a great tinker worker, and people say he has a patent on the spring trip for plows and other machery. He was not in World War I.

Charley was working for his brother John at Kimball, SD when something didn't suit him, so he quit and none of the family ever heard from him again.
When he left brother John he was out in the field, going to make hay. No doubt he was thinking about his poor investment with John and although there were no words of any kind, he stuck his fork in the ground and left -- it was the year 1914.

Charley was a good natured soul and found the easiest way out of difficulties was just to leave. He never looked back.

The last we have ever heard of Charley was when Edward Nowell was rambling about the country and he saw him in St. Louis in 1924 or 1925 and talked to him. Charley also looked like his brother John and his sister Mary, but was shorter, like his brother John. And when Edward asked him if he was Charles, he didn't deny it. Ed never inquired into his business.

When his Grandpa Doescher died, Christopher Tonjes (his father) looked for him. Christopher had the police and highway patrol check several states but Charley had disappeared
By now you probably have this, but here goes. The 1880 census for Grundy Co. Iowa lists a Doescher family which includes a Charles age 1 at Pleasant Valley, page 474. Head of household is Christ.(?Christopher) AD

Is the Hermann Doescher the question concerns in any way related to the Hemann Doescher whom played baseball for the Major League Assosiation??? If we are both referring to the same Hermann Doescher, either my Aunt or I have the name of his wife somewhere, and we can probably easily find out the name. It might be helpful to know that the Hemann Doescher I infact am referring to also had a son whom played in the major league association. Although his name has fled my mind for a second, I do know that Herm's son did begin to play in the Major League Association in 1903, hopefully the dates will help to differenciate whom we are referring to. I believe his son is Joe but I would not bet my life on it.

I am a decendant of the Herman Doescher who played baseball and would be interested in any information that you might have. I believe that his given name was John Herman Doescher and his son was John Herman Jr. but called Jack. I have some further information if you would like to e-mail me.
