Dear Renee,
I know how you feel about losing your Father, I lost my Mother in 2004 and there is still and emptiness for me also. I am interested in the Doggett family because back in your ancestry of William J. Doggett I believe he married Matilda J. Brandt. At least according to the 1930 Nebraska census. Billie J Doggett was 11 years of age at that time. What I am looking for is information about his Mother Matilda Brandt. My Grandmother was her Aunt. I am trying to find out who my Grandmothers and Matilda's fathers' parents were. I sure would enjoy finding any pictures of Matilda's parents and any information as to where they came from in Germany. Matilda's parents names were George C and Fredericka Brandt. I have a small picture of Fredericka (Freda) but none of George. I have other information about the Brandt family if you are interested.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the Benjamin/Richard correction, and I'm glad the information will be useful to you. You probably have this, but the 1844 probate records indicate that Betsy Morton was a widow. If she had any siblings, apparently all of them were deceased by the time George Doggett's estate was probated. Again, thank you. I'll keep you in mind if I come across any additional records related to Sarah Ann or her daughter Elizabeth/Betsy.
Pam

Betsy Morton is almost certainly Elizabeth Reynolds who married Joel Morton December 12, 1796 in Oglethorpe Co. Ga. She died after 1850, probably in Clarke Co. GA. Her mother Sarah Ann Doggett (d. abt. 1793) was the wife of Richard Reynolds (who d. abt. 1787 in Wilkes Co. GA), not Benjamin Reynolds. Your information is helpful, as it further supports Sarah Ann Doggett as the wife of Richard Reynolds (many Reynolds researchers have been wrong on Sarah Ann's identity). Sorry I don't have much detail on the other children of George Doggett and Ann Chattin (my line is the Reynolds family).

CC - thank you for your response. I'm familiar with the Doggett Family website, but it doesn't include this particular George Doggett of Oglethorpe Co, GA.

My line is:
Rev Benjamin Doggett >>
Richard Doggett and Elizabeth Bushrod >>
George Doggett and Ann Chattin >>
Chattin Doggett and Sarah (Culpeper Co VA to Oglethorpe Co GA) >>
William Doggett and Nancy Adams (Oglethrope Co GA to Clarke Co GA to Alabama) >>
dau Elizabeth Doggett and John William Branson (AL).

The George Doggett I'm interested in (single man, no direct heirs) was apparently the first cousin of my William Doggett, and thus he was a grandson of George Doggett and Ann Chattin. The records from GA during this timeframe are hard to come by. The probate records, for instance, are not complete and only provide inticing clues to George's identify.

I appreciate your interest, CC, and your willingness to help. But right now there's no indication that this line went through Rutherford Co, NC. I'll definitely get back to you if I think there might be a connection. (P.S. I have digital photos of St Mary's White Chapel - where the Rev Doggett is buried - if you'd like to have them. Just a small thank-you for responding to my query.)

George Doggett d. 1844 Oglethorpe Co, GA

Who is the George Doggett who died intestate in early 1844 in Oglethorpe Co, GA? His estate papers state that William Doggett, Thomas Doggett, Jesse Kinney (huband of Fanny Kinnie), Oliver Higganbottom (husband of Nancy Higganbottom), Elizabeth Daniel (widow), and Betsy Morton (widow) were his first cousins and his "only next of kin." All of these cousins, except for Betsy Morton, were the children of Chattin Doggett (c1748-1817 Clarke Co, GA). Betsy Morton was supposedly the daughter of Sarah Ann Doggett, sister of Chattin Doggett, and her husband Benjamin Reynolds.

Both Chattin and Sarah Ann were the children of George Doggett and Ann Chattin. So obviously one of George and Ann's other sons (Richard, Thomas, or Miller) had a son named George who died in Oglethorpe Co, GA in 1844. But which one?

Genealogies I have seen indicate that son Richard died young; son Thomas had a son George who left his own descendants; and son Miller also had a son George who left his own descendants. There must be an error in these genealogies. Has anyone else worked on and resolved this?

I agree with you when it comes to familial references in wills and such. However, in this case the term "first cousin" was used in the probate records created by the court. Since George left no will and no heirs, and inheritance was at stake, I think the court was using the term to define a very specific relationship.
