John Doheny is my cousin. My father, Lawrence Christopher Doheny was John Doheny Sr.'s brother.

Another cousin, Audrey Matthias, did quite a bit of genealogical research in the 1990s. She gave me copies of a family tree and some other materials such as newspaper clippings.

Let me know if you want to have copies; I'll scan them and send them to your email address.

William R. Doheny is my grandfather. He and his brother, Edward Lawrence Doheny, ran a lumbermill in Merrill WI. In 1907, E. L. disappeared with all the mill's liquid assets, so W. R. could not meet the payroll. He struggled to keep the lumbermill going, and the following spring--without adequate manpower--tried to handle a logjam up the river by himself. He was crushed to death, leaving my grandmother Bridget O'Connor with 10 young children to raise on her own.
E. L. came back to Merrill almost 30 years later, and my grandmother would not speak to him.

Have you ever been to Greystone in Los Angeles? That was how E. L. was living, while my grandmother, my father and his 9 siblings lived hand to mouth on a hard-scrabble dairy farm.

Regards,

Kathleen Doheny Hennessey

Edward L. Doheny of Union Oil Company was the same Doheny that was caught up in the Teapot Dome Oil scandal in PA in the 1920s. He was never indictd in PA and moved to LA. I used to work for Union Oil Company without knowing that he was related to my Doheny line from Tipperary.

Audrey Matthias provided me with newspaper clippings and obituaries about two of John Doheny's children.
You may be interested to know that one of John Doheny's eldest sons, William J Doheny, was a Holy Cross priest and professor at Notre Dame University, later elevated to monsignor and head of the Sacred Rota in Rome. He died about ten years ago.
John Doheny died in a lumber mill accident in 1908. Bridget O'Connor Doheny dies in the 1940s.
A daughter, Sister Mary Bridget, was a Dominican nun and teacher in the Racine area. She also died about 10 years ago. I have been in touch with the family of another son, John Doheny, an attorney in St. Louis.
John Doheny's brother was E. L. Doheny, the founder of Union Oil Company of California; the film "There Will Be Blood" is about his life. The City of Los Angeles now owns the Doheny family mansion Greystone.

Michael Doheny the Rebel is an uncle to my great great grandfather from Fethard. He escaped from Ireland after the 1848 rebellion collapsed and first went to France and then to New York City. He died in NY in 1862 and was buried in Tipp.

I have his family data and a lot of other info about him and his doings. My Doheny line may be connected to the Nenagh branch but no one has been able to find the connection.
Can you connect with Michael Doheny, the patriot of 1848 and author of The Felon's Track? He was born near Fethard in 1806, I believe.

My line starts with Michael Doheny (1817-1886), baptized at Newport, Tipp 28 May 1817, son of william Doheny and Briget Mara of Knockmeale, Ballynahinch. He emigrated to Montreal circa 1850 and married Alice Ryan circa 1851 and the family was in railroad consrtuction across Canada.

I am familiar with this line through some Dohenys I knew in Northern Virginia in the 1990s. We may be related, but were never able to establish the exact link. My principal contact was Donald Aloysius Doheny, Jr., a lawyer born in St. Louis, who was descended from William Rohde and was very interested ij the family history. Another member of this family was Rev. William Josrph Bernard Doheny (1898-1981), an important writer and authority on Canon law.

Ifany this of interest to you, I could probably dig up a current address for Don Doheny.

Researching family of William Rhody DOHENY b-1857 in Sidneham, Quebec, d- 1908 Merril, WI. He was married to Bridget Whelan O'CONNOR. His father was John Thomas DOHENY, who I believe was born in County Cork, Ireland. John Thomas may have been married to a Honora DONNELLY and/or Ellen DUNLAVY. Let me know if any of this rings a bell. Thanks.

Hi Cath great to hear from you.
Yes since I last wrote I have been to Fennor graveyard again, took photos this time. I found Mahoney ancestors but as you said there were no Callaghans or Armstrongs however good news I did find & take photos of a grave of Hanna(Gratton)Boucher & Im in contact with her desendent Bill.
As for John Callaghan & Bridget(Armstrong)Ive had no luck.
While in the Urlingford not only did we search Fennor & The Mill again we searched every graveyard ... Boulick Kilcooly, Gortnahoe churchyard & Clonmatagh. Ironically a day before we returned home I found out that Bridget came from Laois making me think she maybe buried back in Laois - who knows?
Now I start my search for her again in County Laois.
I would like to say thanks for your reply and time. I wish you luck in your search.
Patzy C UK

Patzy,

Sorry to disappoint you, but I couldn't find even one CALLAGHAN, ARMSTRONG, or GRATTAN/GRATTON in the work called, "FENNOR GRAVEYARD: dedicated to THE NATIVITY of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY." There are transcriptions of headstones in this booklet from the 1700's through the 1900's, and then 289 names in list form at the end of the booklet of burials from 1948 to 1996. In the last two months, have you found where they are buried?

Cath

Wow! You have the goods on the DeLaney's- a lot more than I have for sure. But Uncle Joe has promised to send me everything he has researched over the years. Problem is they are in the process of moving and his computer is in storage until the new house is done. Hopefully soon. Our side of the Delaney's-Dad and his two brothers and two sisters all left the Poughkeepsie area in the 1940's. My grandmother had already passed on and My grandfather died in the early 1950's. Except for occasional visits back, to see my mothers side of the family my recollection of that area is limited. My Dad and Mom settled in Syracuse, New York . That is where I stil live. I work with Special Education children in a school district right outside Syracuse. My husband is self employed as a Certified Public Accountant. We have one daughter presently in college. I have to ask where you are from as I have noted the GMT time zone? Do keep in touch.

Hi Again,
I read the history by St. Denis church. Very nice. . Mostly that was furnished by Iva Delaney Johns. Her son Norman Johns lives in the house almost opposite DDD Sr tall monument in old section St Denis cemetery. To the right of that house Lived Anna Mae (Delaney) Hill and her brother Richard Delaney(who I believe is still alive)? Iva and Anna & Richard are siblings. To the left of the Johns house - in the woods - is Lake Delaney. Iva had it named and I have a map that shows it. Lots of folks just call it hidden lake. It is where the iron ore mine was. You can still see the old cart & tracks - if they haven't rusted away - on the bottom - on a clear still day
Are you in school? Working? Married?
Hubby & I are retired.
Keep in touch!!
bj

I have interviews with some of the old folks taken in the early 60's before they died or went soft . As for grudges, if the Irish didn't hold the grudge for at least 5 generations it wasn't worth the trouble. Grandma's sister Gert told me that!!
bj

Hi Cousin
I spoke with my Uncle Joe yesterday and my great grandfather was Richard, son of Daniel David DeLaney. One of Richard's sons was my granfather John E. DeLaney. So I guess your great granfather and mine were brothers. For some reason unknown to my uncle , there was a riff in the family long before he was born and one side did not speak to the other although they all owned property on Sylvan Lake and spent summers vacationing there. Who knows what happened? Anyhow, he is going to send me all the info he has as apparently he has spent years researching our roots. Good to speak with you and hopefully I will again once I have more info.

Hi Cousin,
It will be nice to have someone to work with on DeLaney again. Cousin Iva Delaney Johns died a few years ago, ditto Cousin Daniel Delaney.
Daniel David Delaney, Sr. marr.Katharine Doheny, prior (I assume) to 1843. Children: Mary Ann, b.1843, Richard, 1846, James,1848, Daniel,1849, Catherine, 1850, John, 1852 & Elizabeth Jane 1853.
Daniel David Delaney Jr. marr. Elizabeth V Jackson, had Mary Ann, Daniel Raymond, Gertrude, Elizabeth, Bernard & Martin, (twins) Florence, Genevieve, (my grandmother), Joseph Albert, James Raymond & John Francis (twins), Robert Emmet, Edwin & Regina. 14 children. Are we in agreement so far?
bj

Thank you so much, Bill, for the information. I was mistaken about the marriage date. As you said, it's the date Walter and Mary Reel (shown in places as Riel???) were married.

Walter and Mary were my great grandparents. Their son Harry Walter Doheny was my grandfather; Dennis John Doheny was my dad.

I'm just getting started in my search and went to Rootsweb yesterday where I found Thomas and Honorah . . . and YOU! Thanks for your help.

You are in the right ballpark but the wrong date.

I am a direct descendant of Thomas and Honorah thru their daughter Catherine. But Thomas (1816-1893) and Honorah (1818-1873) were married 16 Feb 1837 in Ballyfowloo, Tipperary. They immigrated to Susquehanna County, PA in 1840, then migrated to Jessenland, Sibley County, MN in 1853.

Their daughter Catherine married William Thomas Grimes in Mar, 1862 at St ThOmas Catholic Church in Jessenland. William ThOmas and Catherine were my great grandpartents.

Thomas and Honorah are buried in St Thomas Church Cemetery in Jessenland.

I am the manager of the Doheny Surname List on Rootsweb.

Where do you live and where did you get the 1868 marriage date?

The marriage date that you have is the date when Thomas and Honorah's son Walter Thomas Doheny was married to Mary/Marie Reel at St Thomas hurch.

Hi, Patzy,

It's always a nice surprise to get a reply even years later about something posted on these bulletin boards, so thank you for writing.

It appears that many from Graigue were buried in Fennor and Old Mill cemeteries, though a cousin took photos of a graveyard and labled the reverse side Graigue, so that might mean Graigue also had its own graveyard. A group transcribed all the tombstones in Fennor. They did a wonderful job. My cousin has a copy. What name are you looking for. I'll ask him if he has time to do a lookup for you.

Cath.

I am looking for the family of William and Elizabeth Doheny who lived in NYC in the late 1800's. William was a merchant in French silk and supposedly was put out of business with the rise of popularity of Asian silk. William shortened his name to Dohen as an adult. Elizabeth died in 1896 in Queens.

Hello Beyer1882!
I recently flew over to Dublin to obtain my GGrandmothers birth cert. I always thought she was from either Gortnahoe village, Urlingford town or Fennor but on the cert her parents address was GRAIGUE in the parish of Fennor.
I have been to Urlingford, Gortnahoe and Fennor where other ancestors have lived and are buried to visit family and the local graveyards.
Like you I would love to know more about Graigue. I noticed the date on your post being 2002 & I wondered have you gained any interesting information about Graigue in the last 6 years?
Does Graigue have its own graveyard or did the locals use Fennor & The Mill Urlingford?
Regards Patzy C UK

Hello Cath and thank you for your prompt reply.
I was thinking perhaps I wouldnt get one considering the time passed since you posted so Im well pleased.

I was in Fennor and The Mill graveyards only last month, a cold November late afternoon with the crows squawking around us made our visit very spooky as the sun went down ha ha. While there I took photos of recent ancestors headstones but some of the really old headstones were unreadable to my ageing eye ... perhaps others could see better than me so I will take you up on this wonderful offer of help.
I had no luck in finding my GGGrandparents JOHN CALLAGHAN & BRIDGET(nee ARMSTRONG)graves in either Fennor or The Mill (hence my query asking if Graigue had a graveyard)
Also looking for GRATTAN/GRATTON.
Thank you very much Cath.

Best Regards Patzy C UK

My dad John, who passed on last year, grew up in Poughkeepsie, the son of John E. DeLaney and Eileen Brooks DeLaney. He often spoke of his summers spent on Sylvan Lake. I have ben trying to find out more info on anyone who might be still in Ireland and was thrilled to see inqueries as old as they are on Katherine Doheny. I found invaluable info on Daniel through the cemetery records of St. Denis parish. Please respond as I would love to speak with you.

Have confirmed the Riggin relation. Michael A. Doheny married to Margaret Hagerty Doheny. Margaret had a brother William M Hagerty - married to Marie Modin. That's where I come in. But my interest is in an affair Marie had that led to my lineage - a son Wendell Joseph Hagerty. Since I have begun the search I did locate the Modin family, but am unsettled witht he Hagerty side. The Modin family seem to think my dad looks like the Hagerty line - maybe he was conceived legitimately - at any rate there were 7 other Hagerty children that my dad never knew. I am hoping to find someone who may know of this story. I have a picture of Evelyn Doheny and Lyle Hagerty (one of my dad's brothers). She was 2 years old at the time of the picture. I have found out that Marjorie Doheny Dobervich lives in the Michael and Margaret home. Would like to get in touch with her. In 1941, my 2 aunts tried to find information - that is how I have come this far with the search. My email is junebug5@alltel.net
Thx for any info!

Recently noticed your ref to Thomas and Honorah. I am decended from Thomas Doheny of Tipperary and Hannah Morrisay (married June 15, 1868). Could this be the Thomas and Honorah Morrissey in your family?

I am decended from Walter Doheny 1768-1840, and wife Catherine Connelly 1780-1850 of Tipperary. Do you and I have a connection?

I am searching for any decendents of Martin Doheny (1819-1888) and Ellen (Ryan) Doheny (1832-1896) that imigrated in mid-1840s and eventually settled in Warren County,Iowa. Many of relations appear to have remained in central part of Iowa.
