Welcome cousin !!!

Thank you for adding more pieces to this complex puzzle we call our family tree. As far as I know, most of the information you have supplied is accurate. You do have a few fuzzy spots. One of the problems that we have is that our ancestors immigrated early in the 1700’s and only a small amount of information was officially recorded and some of that didn’t survive.

You’re the fifth descendent of Joseph Dome on this board. Hopefully a few more cousins will pop up with more pieces and before long we’ll complete the puzzle. If you read some of the other messages on this board, you’ll see a few messages from Mike Dome. He and I are both descendents of Hiram Dome and his second wife. Mike’s grampa, Earl Dome, did extensive research back in the 1960’s. I don’t know how much of it was based on family records and how much was from digging in libraries, but up ‘til now, 3 of the 4 of us have been building on the family worksheets that he authored. Personally, due to health problems, my research has been thru the internet and books & CD’s. Bertha Sullivan is a descendent of John R and his first wife. And Connie Donovan is a descendent of Joseph’s son Joseph and his second wife. None of us are from southern Indiana though, we all descend from wanderers like Joseph. Joseph has descendents in at least the following states – WA, OR, CA, ID, OK, CO, TX, KY, IL, IN, MI and NJ.

I couldn’t find a Conrad Dom in any of the passenger lists that I have checked. The earliest record I found was a John Dome that arrived in New England on 19 September 1635. I have recently been unsuccessful at trying to find a connection between a Joseph Dom that arrived with a wife and child in 1730 and Conrad. In my searches I have run across a few possible Dome relatives in NC, but didn’t keep a record of them because I thought they would be distant relatives at best. Now I’m going to include North Carolina in my research. In Earl’s research there is a mention of a Conrad Dome living in PA in 1723. Now that I’ve seen your info, I’m going to have to find out if there are any 1723 passenger lists recorded anywhere.

As I mentioned in the beginning, a few of your facts are a bit fuzzy – need some rearranging. The Conrad and Joseph that you mention weren’t brothers. Conrad Dome and Charlotte Hildebrand (we haven’t found a birth date or place for either – nor a marriage date or place) had at least seven children – all born in Maryland. The oldest was Joseph (born in or before 1770 according to census records). The other six that we know about were Charlotte (b. ?), Jacob (c. 1779), George (c. 1782), Conrad Jr. (c. 1785), John (c. 1788) and Susannah (c. 1790). Conrad, Charlotte and the six younger children moved to Staunton, VA around 1791/2. Conrad is on the 1790 MD census, but starting 1792 he’s on the VA tax lists. For some reason Joseph didn’t join them until around 1794. Earl shows that Conrad died in 1817, but I recently found reference to a Conrad Dome whose will was executed and probated in 1802. Maybe grandpa Conrad had a cousin Conrad ? Time will tell. Joseph married Mary Summers in 1797. Mary came from a very large family and several of her relatives had land grants in Kentucky, so Joseph and Mary joined a group of her relatives and they all settled in Green County. There’s even a town in Green County called Summersville. Earl had seven children listed, but I had added David in pencil. Although I felt he belonged, I hadn’t found enough proof. Thanks to you, I now know that he belongs. Actually, if you hadn’t posted, I might never have found YOUR branch, because your gggm Clarissa married before the 1850 census, when they started showing family members. So here’s what I have for Joseph and Mary’s family:

1- David Dome, b. abt 1799, married Ann Dobson 3 Dec 1825 in Green Co, KY. 1830 census shows a 5 yr old son and daughter under 5 yrs old.
2- Elizabeth Dome, b. abt 1803, married Tom Cahoe 16 Jan 1821 in Green Co, KY.
3- Joseph Dome, b. 1806, married Esther Compton 12 June 1827 in Green Co, KY. They had 4 children before she died abt 1846. His second wife was the widow of William Compton. Maria Halstead Compton had four children from her first marriage. Joseph and Maria added 7 more children. --- Joseph’s oldest son, Isaac, was born in 1832. Isaac and his first wife only had one child – George W. Dome (he married Ida May Messimore on 17 Nov 1878). Joseph died in 1895 in Utica, MO.
4- John R (1808-1880) and his first wife, Susan Hurst (1815-1868) had 13 children. Susan was the daughter of Elijah Hurst (of Hursttown) and his first wife. Elijah had seventeen children by his two wives. John R married Emily Sandage in 1875. They only had one more child.
5- Susan Dome, b. 1812, married Robert D. Dobson (b. 1810) 7 Aug 1834 in Green Co, KY. They had a son Joseph, b 1835 in Indiana.
6- Sarah Bloyd Dome, b. 1814, married William Mathias Winn (b. 1812) 17 July 1833 in Green Co, KY. They had 7 children. Sarah died in 1876.
7- Hiram Alexander Dome (1815-1885) married Abigail Martin in 1838 in Elkhart Co, IN. She presented him with 5 children before she died in 1849 from consumption. He married Sarah Parker in 1850 and she presented him with 6 more children before she died in 1866. He married Aurelia Little in 1868.
8- Mary Ann Dome, b. 1821, married James Eaton (b. 1822) in Harrison Co., Ind. Thomas Eaton was born in 1845 and Charlotte Eaton was born in 1849.
Joseph and most of his family moved to Indiana in the early 1830’s. I wasn’t sure why some were missing, or why they left Kentucky. Both Mary Summers Dome and Charlotte Hildebrand Dome died in Staunton, VA in 1821. I figured that Joseph and Mary must have taken at least some of their family and gone to visit the family in VA when some type of epidemic struck. There are no records for a child named George. Joseph had a brother named George. He was born around 1782 and joined the Indiana militia in 1812. He was killed by Indians in 1813 in Brownstown, IN. Is it possible that David’s middle name was George? Maybe it was David George Dome that was killed by Indians in Kentucky? Maybe Tom and Elizabeth Cahoe were killed too? I have a marriage record for the Cahoe’s. I have a marriage record and 1830 census record for David and family. Hiram, Joseph, and John along with their families and their father Joseph are in the 1840 Elkhart County IN census. Susan, Sarah and Mary Ann and their families are in the 1850 Harrison Co. IN census. But I can’t find any further records for David or Elizabeth. Do you think your grandmother may know about any of this?

Bobbi :-)
