Hi,
Thank you for writing me back. I'm so excited to find somebody to help me fill in some of the blanks with my family history.
Ok... My Father was Robert Lonabarger and his parents were William and Mary Lonabarger. I'm not sure which of my Dad's sisters has the name of Stiving, Irene or Mildred? I remember visiting one of them (can't remember which sister it was) in Pioneer and they lived on a farm, or at least when I was little it looked like a farm. She made us homemade chicken noodle soup that my Dad said was one of her special dishes. ~~ I have very little information on the Lonabarger family line. Actually I only have my Father's family members and his Father. I do however have lots and lots of family pictures that were my Grandparents, William and Mary. I have no idea who all the people are in the pictures, but they range from babies all the way to adulthood. I know I have pictures of Mildred, Irene and I think Paulene. I'm really at a standstill with the Lonabarger family history and I hope so much you can help fill in some information for me. Please feel free to write me at ja_po@msn.com
I look forward to hearing from you.
Jan

Yes, this is the same Stiving family. In fact, any Stiving in the United States is from the same family. Please contact me so we can go over the family information. Thanks.

DOHM, Franz - NYC, 1856

Looking for information about a Franz Dohm who was living at 13 Centre St, New York, NY, in 1856. He and George Habermehl were witnesses at the wedding of Johann Georg Lahr and Henrietta Langohr on 30 May 1856 in NYC. For more info on Johann Georg Lahr (George J. Lahr in America) or Henrietta Langohr, see the LAHR and LANGOHR surname message boards for my postings. Franz Dohm's origins may provide data I need about the Lahrs. Thx.

Marcia
I read your post with interest re the Dhom family. I also have an ancestress with that name (various spellings).

Anna Elizabetha Dhom was born c1784 probably at Gonratherhof near Weiller in the Rheinland, Germany (this was her parent's address on Elizabeta's marriage record) the eldest unmarried daughter of Charles Frederic Dhom and Marie Madeleine Plattau. Elizabeh married a widower and went to live at Sobernheim, on the Nahre River, a stream off the Rhine River not very far from Weiller.

Regards
MARGARET from Australia

Bertha Dohm Stiving and Arthur (Vern) Stiving were my great-grandparents. Interestingly, their marriage brought together two lines tracing back to Christian Dohm. I see your post is several years old, so you may already have this info. Christian Dohm and Elizabeth Huff had 5 children: Jacob, Henry, Samuel Israel, John, and Leah. Samuel Israel had many children, one of whom was Samuel Sylvester, father to Bertha Dohm. Christian and Elizabeth's daughter, Leah, married Philip Stiving. Leah and Philip had 8 children, one of whom was Jacob W., the father of Arthur Stiving, who married Bertha Dohm. Philip Stiving's parents were Jacob Stiving and Savilla Weidner. Jacob was born 9 July 1796 in Germany, immigrated to the U.S. in 1834, and died 16 Aug 1875 in Richland Co., OH. If you have gained any more info on this family over the years, I would love to know more!

I have been trying to establish a paper trail between Rosanna Dohm and my great grandmother, Verona or Veronia umlor, Bartholomew. This is the one I believe to be Frederick J. Umlor's sister. If you have any info it would be appreciated.
I also have four more generations back past Theo.Sr and Salomea Barbara Host. I have been working in the libraries looking for info. She was the daughter of Elijah Hurst & his 1st wife.
(The Hursts are the founders of Hursttown, Indiana.
Susan & John and Leah but I don't have anymore on Leah.
John R. Dome was the son of Joseph Dome and Mary Summers.
They appear in the 1810 census of Green Co. Ky but it is spelled
Doome. (It is however, the Dohm family!) Hoped this helped!

We went to Fred & Effie's 60th wedding anna.in 1952 they had a big write in the paper and listed all their children (11) by name but no brothers or sisters names. You probably have their names & who they married, right if not I can send them. Theo Sr. was married to Salomea Barbara Host, correct? I'm a little confused, the children you listed are from whom Joseph D & Rosanna H. or Theo & Katherine?Joann

Looking for any information for the family of Martin Dohm born 1817 in Prussia, married Anna M and settled in Cross Plains, Dane Co, WI. He may have immigrated at same time as son Ferdinand. Ferdinand was born 11/1845 in Stommeln, near Colgne in Prussia and immigrated in 1872, married Gerdreth Unknown (born in Michigan) and also farmed in Cross Plains, WI. Other known children of Martin & Anna are Catherine 1848, Anna 1853, Marie 2/1857 (married Adam Maier), and Sibilla 1862. Thanks!

Dohms from Michigan

My great grandfather was Charles Dohm, born in1829 in Germany according to the 1900 census, (but born in Michigan says the census of 1880). The spelling is Doahm only in the 1880 record, with wife Jane (Young) and 5 children: Augustus, Edward, Samuel Young (my grandfather), Carl and Wilhelmina. In the 1870 census he lists his POB as Prussia. I cannot seem to trace him back farther, and need to know when he came to the U.S. so I can search the Immigration Records. Can you help? He was still living in Erie, Monroe Co, Michigan area as a widower in 1900, and my grandparents came to California soon after.
Thank you so very much.....LaVonne Dohm Holmes

Dohm or Dhom

I am not related to any Dhoms but found a trunk of their stuff (Karl and Alva) in my mom's basement. I don't know very much about them except that they where childless and she lived in Seattle before she died. I believe that she died in the 1940s or 1950s but I may be wrong. Prior to moving west, he was a printer somewhere in the midwest. I have a communion certificate for Karl Dhom, written in German, from April 5, 1891. Pictures indicate that either he or she was one of many children. If I can find any of the associated family, they might like the pictures.

Some corrections and additions to my earlier posting. Martin Dohm (born 1817) and Anna M (born 1820) settled in Springfield, Dane Co, WI and son Ferdinand (born 1845) immigrated in 1855 (not 1872) at age 10; so assume Martin would have immigrated at this time as well. Other children of Martin are Catherine (1848), Anna (1853), Maria (1857) and Sibilla (1862). They must connect with the John Dohm and Theresa Stahl family but I can't figure out how. Can anyone help?

Re: Joseph and Conrad Dome

Hello Bobbi,

I believe that your Joseph Dome, born in 1806, and his second wife, may very well be my husband's ggg grandparents, parents to his gg grandmother, Maria Dome, born April 10, 1851-1852 in Warsaw, Indiana, married to Frances Marion Conklin, born June 3, 1841 in Ohio (note that Joseph's second wife's name is the same as Maria Dome's).

The following is taken from the 1900 census for Biotia, Spinks County, South Dakota:

From 1900 census for Beotia Township, Spinks County, South Dakota, taken June 25, 1900. Ages, place of birth for individual, and parents of Francis and Maria as follows: Francis: 58; Ohio; Ohio; Pennsylvania. Maria: 47; Indiana; Kentucky; Ohio. Harry: 28; Missouri. Stella: 14; South Dakota. Florence: 12; South Dakota. Bessie: 9; South Dakota. Francis' occupation is listed as farmer. Nothing is listed for Frances Maria OR for Harry. The girls are listed as "at school". Frances Maria was born January, 1874, and at the age of 15, married Wilmot Kester, born February, 1860 in Ontario, Canada, so as she was already married by the time of the 1900 census, would naturally not be listed with her family. Note that Maria lists the birth place of her father as Kentucky, and that of her mother as Ohio, while she was born in Indiana.

I also noted with extreme interest in the text of your message a reference to a Connie Donovan, related to this same Joseph, and am wondering if by an amazing coincidence, this is my husband's cousin--Emil's mother is the youngest of three girls, one of his aunts being Aileen (Fredrickson) Donovan, and Emil has a cousin Connie.

If you can verify any of my assumptions for me, and better yet, can confirm that I have in fact found my husband's "Dome" ancestry, I would be most grateful.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Aimee A. (Drown) Harris, wife of Emil V. Harris

A "P.S." to the first post: I had also meant to add the following, found in the 1850 census for Elkhart County, Concord Township, taken August 2, 1850:

In household #272, family #273: Joseph Dome, 43, farmer, born in Kentucky; Mrs. Dome, 31, born in Ohio; John Compton, 13, born in Indiana; William Compton, 11, born in Iowa; James Compton, 9, born in Iowa; Catherine Compton, 6, born in Iowa; Francis Dome, 1, born in Indiana; Isaac Dome, 18, laborer, born in Indiana; Calvin Dome, 11, born in Indiana; Martha Dome, 4, born in Indiana; Joseph Dome, Jr., 2, born in Indiana.

In retrospect, now, this Joseph could not have been our Francis Maria's father, as she was born in 1874; however, circumstantial evidence would certainly indicate that she is either this Joseph's Joseph, Jr.'s, daughter, (named after his sister Francis and his grandmother Maria?), or the daughter of one of the other of Joseph's brothers. Sure hope you have information that can help me tie up her family.

Thanks, Aimee

Hi Cousin !!!

Joseph Dome is your GGGgrandfather too. I’m going to switch to the Dome message board. Although the Dome’s and the Dohm’s are both descendants of Germans with the surname Dom, I’m not sure how far back the link goes. Dom (pronounced with a long O) was misspelled by the people who wrote the passenger lists, so Dome, Dohm, Doom, Doam, Doem, Dhom, Tom, Tome, Thom, Thome, and dozens of others are all cousins.

Bobbi
Hi Mike;

Dr. David Crockett Dome and my G-grandfather were first cousins.

Although their grandfather, Joseph (born 1770) and his family lived in Green County, Kentucky from around 1800 to around 1830/31, I don’t know that any of them ever actually met Davey Crockett.

D. C. Dome was born in 1835. In 1834, Davey Crockett ran for US Congress in Tennessee. There were a lot of newspaper articles written about him and his adventures. There were also several biographies written about him.

If you were to check the family tree, you would find a couple boys named George Washington Dome and several boys named James Madison Dome, so a David Crockett Dome isn’t all that surprising.

Bobbi
Mike;

I wouldn't give up just yet. The more I think about it, our antecedents may have only used the names of famous people that they actually knew. Family members could have known Geo Washington and Jas Madison since the our family lived in PA, MD and VA. Davey Crockett worked as a waggoner and day-laborer from 1799 to 1802, its possible that he knew or worked for the elder Joseph who lived in Green Co, Kentucky at that time. Davey named the homestead he bought in 1813 'Kentuck'. I don't think he would have done that if he hadn't spent a decent amount of time in the state.
I'll keep it in mind while I'm searching.
Later
Bobbi :-)

The info on Jacob Dohm was very helpful. I'd like to
hear more about your ancestry. Can you e-mail me directly?
Thanks!

Hi Bobbi,

Believe it or not, I just saw your answer to my last post from January. Between my research on both sides of my families, and both sides of Emil's, as well as just the daily demands of life, and trying to juggle all of this with my health, I never got back to the board until now. But I wanted to thank you so much for your information, and also, a great big THANK YOU for the history lessons, etc., as well. I love to learn all of these things, and even though my own grandfather was German, who did not come to the U.S.A. until he was 19 years of age, I don't know a lot of this stuff, as he raised his family with the "You are Americans, and that is what is important" method, so therefore would not teach any of the German ways. Yes, being American was very important, but a wealth of heritage was also lost, so I thank you for this education. Bobbi, do you have copies of any birth, marriage, death, etc. certificates, or any other documentation that you would be willing to share? I'd gladly pay for their cost, etc. Please let me know. If possible, could you e-mail me at my personal e-mail address? Thanks again, Aimee
