I hope you are still out there, as I am responding to this almost 7 years later! Yes, my grandfather was Ralph Henry Doke, a policeman in Milwaukee. His mother was Edith Hoyt. Last spring I visited the family graves in Round Hill cemetery in Durand, WI. Edith Hoyt Doke is buried there with her husband Andrew Doke and baby daughter Mabel. Edith's mother, Sarah Hoyt, and father Henry S. Hoyt, and brother Ben Hoyt, are there also. Do you have any information on this Hoyt family? Edith died supposedly from rheumatoid arthritis at age 34 shortly after giving birth to Mabel. I have no other information about her or her family. How are you connected to the Hoyts?

Justis F. Doke married Minnie Papenfus in Ohio

I am looking for information on Justis F.[possible Fife] Doke that was born in March of 1873 in Ohio and possibly died in Delaware Co., Indiana before 1930. They called him Jesse Doke and he was a inmate in the Ohio Penitenuary in Columbus, Ohio during 1910. Minnie [Papenfus] Doke in 1910 was living with her brother in law John H. Ballreich in Tiffin, Seneca Co., Ohio along with her mother Wilhelmina Papenfus.

I know that in July of 1908 there was a terrible house fire where Justis & Minnie lived and that 3 of their five children died in that fire, Lillian 4, Goldie 6,& Benjamin 18 months, or Dennis, which Benjamin might have been his given name. Minnie states in the 1910 census that she had 5 live births with 0 children living. Does anyone have the names of the other 2 children that possibly died before 1908 as Goldie had scarlet fever when she was a baby and was crippled and blind from scarlet fever.

1910 > OHIO > FRANKLIN > 8-WD COLUMBUS, Part of Columbus City, Ohio Penitentuary, Series: T624 Roll: 1182 Page: 71, Line 88, 15th. day of April
Justice Doke/Dake, inmate, m, w, 34, married 1 time for 11 yrs., b: OH, parents b: OH, laborer in bolt works

1920 > INDIANA > DELAWARE > 5-WD; MUNCIE; CENTER TWP., Series: T625 Roll: 427 Page: 44, 7th. day of January, Living at 2817 South Franklin Street, Dwelling 123, Family 131
Justice Doke, head, 49, married, can read and write, b: PA?, parents b: United States, occupation; driver, automobile something [can't make it out[, owns business
Minnie, wife, f, w, 45, married, immigrated 1886, naturalized, can read & write, b: Germany, parents b: Germany, occupation, machine operator in steel mill

In 1930, Minnie Doke is still living in Delaware Co., Indiana.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheryl
Shiela: If I am right the book "Doak Family History and Genealogy" which you have written by Haynes begins with Samuel and Elizabeth (Malseed)Doak who came from Ireland to the State of Penn. about 1800. If this is the book you have it will not contain the information which I need as my John Doke was in Mercer, Kentucky by 1790. So if you haven't already started copying it for me, please do not. If you have please let me know what I owe you for it. If it should contain another line than I will still want very much to see it. Coleen Allen

One, here in Ohio was a buggymaker. Another had a business and I think a mercantile store of some sort. Most I think were in some sort of business but have not heard oil. It might be interesting to note if we are related from New York and or Virginia. Since there are not that many Doak/Doke families in the United States I tend to think the early ones were related if only cousins. Will be interested in any info you find also will be happy to share my information with you. Do you have the book I mentioned before which I have? I will be happy to make you a copy and I think the charge at the copy store is 10 cents per page, there being 123 pages and the cost of the postage when mailed to you.

Most of the Ohio Dokes went on west, many settling in Colorado, etc. So I am not sure how they might connect. I too saw in the book I have "The Irvins, Doaks, Logans and McCampbells of Virginia and Kentucky (by Margaret Morris, Copyright 1916) that they did go into Indiana.

Do you have a "quick print" perhaps that would be as reasonable as the time you will spend on copying. Ours here in Ohio are about 8 cents a page and that is as cheap as I can copy on my copier. My copier has very small cartridges and only copy about 300 pages.. Gay

Shiela: Thanks for your help. I went on line and feel that the books is a little to pricey unless I know for sure that it has my John and Eleanor Doke in it. If it does then I would be willing to pay that much. Other wise I would appreciate it if you would copy what you feel would be of value to me.
I am in Albion, Idaho. So postage will be a little more than one might expect. But that is okay, I will be glad to pay it and your other expense. Coleen

Hello Sheila.... I would like a copy of the book also. I am a descendant of the Doke family. I would appreciate a copy and am willing to pay for copying, postage, and handling. I have access to a copy of the Ohio (Fostoria) Dokes (it is in their library) and will be happy to make a copy should you want one. The Ohio Dokes came from PA, perhaps VA OR NY. It has been a while since I have worked on Doke Genealogy. My great grandmother married Isaac John Doke. He was in the Civil War and died as a result of the same. Gay Jones

Thank you for your reply and I would appreciate very much if you would copy any information that it might have concerning my line. Hopefully it will have some information for me.
My Great grandmother , Nannie Ellen Doke born 10 Aug 1851, Mercer, Co. Ky. dau. of Thomas J.Doke Born 10 Sep 1825, Ky., Son of Thomas Doke born Oct 1771,Va. son of John Doke & Elinor, born abt 1735, in Va.
I know how you feel about Genealogies being sent to trash. When My Husband & I were micro-filming for the Family History Center of Salt Lake a man brought us a genealogy record he had picked up by a trash barrel, the man of the house had died and the records thrown away. We were glad to film them and have the information on record for others to find. I would hate for all the research I have done the last 50 years to be thrown away, but have kids that are interested in it so don't think that will ever happen, besides I have filmed alot of it and sent it to the Family History Center in Salt Lake City.
Please let me know of the expense you have in making any copies and I will compinsate you for it.
Coleen

Coleen,I was just checking and found that Amazon.com has that book for sale under used books. Pretty pricy for a small book but I bet it's in better shape then mine.
Shiela
