Wow!! Yes, Samuel was born 12 Mar 1819 in Ohio, and died 18 NOv. 1900. He was the father of my great grandfather, William H. Dole, Sr., b Feb 1848, but I've never been able to find his death date. I even have a letter he wrote to my mother from William Sr., and several family photos that I am willing to share. I have quite a lot of info on the Doles going back to Richard Dole, a first settler of Newbury, MASS. Further back, I have info back to Richard Dole b. 1570 in England (no death date). His father (no first name of record) Dole was born in 1545, and that's where my research ends as of now. (I'm still pressing forward.)
Since I've found so many conflicting records, I'd love to see what you have. What is your family tree name? Mine is under HOMER DURHAM, my father, who married Eliz. H. Dole, my mother.
I believe my line is related to the original settler, Richard, and in his line somewhere is James Drummond Dole, the Pres. of the Dole Fruit Co., Hawaii. I also have info about how the Dole's arrived in England from France (1066 w/William the Conqueror) - from Hughes de Dol of Dol, France, one of his knights or nobles. Interesting story!

Please send your info to my regular email account: theartist17923@gmail.com, as I have some info I can attach for you. Please give me your reg. email address too.
Thanks,
Helen Durham Gromadzki
The Villges, FL

I would love to have a copy of Samuel Dole's Bible record. He was my great, great grandfather on my mother's side. His son, William H. (b. 1847 Ohio) was my great grandfather, and his son, William H. Jr., my grandfather. My mother was Elizabeth H. Dole (m. Durham).
I have also found other Doles going back to 1550s, and you can find them all listed in my Ancestry Public Tree for Homer Durham, my father's name. If this information accurately duplicates what is in your family Bible, please confirm, and you won't have to make copies. I also have photos. I have info on the original Dole (alias de Dol from Dol, France), who was in William the Conqueror's Army (either as a knight or noble) in 1066, and was granted land in England when William the Conqueror successfully captured England. I'm willing to share whatever if of interest to you. Would love to hear from you.

Helen Durham Gromadzki

Re: Simeon Dole 1850 Born England

A couple of errors there I believe.

1980 in the body of your message ?, surely you meant 1850, as in the title of your message.

Also, I think the name should be Simeon DOEL.

If so, Simeon Doel was born in the third quarter of 1850 in the parish of Westbury, county of Wiltshire, England.

He appears in two censuses in 1851 he is living in Southwick near the village of North Bradley in the Westbury registration district of the county of Wiltshire.

His father James was an agricultural labourer and his mother Charlotte was a hand loom weaver.

In 1861 the family is living in Hilperton Road, Trowbridge, County of Wiltshire.

Father is now a domestic gardener and mother is a domestic servant, 16 year old son George is a a farm servant.

In 1871 they are living at Half Way Lane, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and Simeon is a gardener, brother George isn't listed there, but there are two sisters, Louisa 18 and Jane 16.

There is also a marriage in 1871 which might be the same Simeon, in the last quarter of 1871 he married either Amelia Porter or Ann White in Melksham, which is in the district he was listed in on the census.

Although there is another Simeon registered as being born in the Westbury district in 1843.

A further check on following censuses might clarify the issue as regards the wives, however as far as simeon 1850 goes, he disappears after 1871.

Where did he go to.?

Anyway, there were and still are loads of Doels in the above mentioned areas, so some of them must be descended from Simeon's family.

I have a couple of suggestions for following that up if you want any.

I'm not a paid member of this site, so email me on targetno@hushmail.com if you want any more help etcetera.

Regards, James.

We only have five male Dole's in the DNA test program. Two are in the Tobias Dole line and three are in the Richard Dole line.

At YDNA 37 markers: one of each line is -2 to me and one of Richard is -3 to me and another one of Richard is -4 to me.

This indicates that both lines are related at some time in history.

Jack Dole

Hi, just saw your message re: your purchase of the Dole family bible. My late husband was a direct descendent of the first Richard Dole to land in America. Line includes Richard Dole marr. Hannah Rolfe, Dole and Hester Burpee, Dole and Plumer, Dole and Greenleaf, Hannah Dole and Mr. Cavender, Hannah Dole and Thomas Downs, Hannah Dole Downs and Ira Ricker. Unfortunately, Hannah Dole Downs' son changed his name from Ricker to Davis which was a previous Hannah Dole's middle name. If this book contains any mention or pictures of any of these ancestors, could you email me or perhaps send a picture copy to mamaluz2@Yahoo.com.

I have posted a review of "History of the Fire-Lands," published in 1879 by WW Williams on the "Firelands History Website": http://firelands.wordpress.com.
Included in this book is a biography of Orrin Dole, born in 1806 and an early settler of the Firelands of Northwestern Ohio.
The Firelands, or Sufferers' Land, was set aside for "Sufferers" in Connecticut whose homes were burned by the British during the American Revolution. It includes present day Huron, Erie, Ottawa, and Ashland Counties in Ohio.
My post includes a short synopsis of "History of the Fire-Lands" and the Table of Contents with links to the free on-line book's histories, biographies and illustrations of the pioneers and their families.
I invite you to check out this interesting biography of Orrin Dole and other pioneers of the Firelands.

Hi George:

The property is owned by SPNEA which has information on the website: http://www.historicnewengland.org/historic-properties/homes/...

You might see if the society would allow you admittance when you come in July.
Hello. This is George William Dole. Our family reunion is held every year in Newburyport, MA on the 3rd Saturday in July. In 1995 someone noticed that an old stone home near a river had a sign on it "The Dole-Little" Home. It is the one of only 11 historically protected homes in Massachusetts.

Just do a Google search for "Dole-Little" and you will get the historic first Dole home from the mid-1600's.

They left around 1851 as I have a deed of their's, but it is for his side of the family.

Gail

Re: Thomas Dole of Saugatuk, MI, refuses to sell liquor in hotel, then loses hotel

I do, indeed, have more on them. Thomas and Elizabeth had 3 children, all boys. They started out their married life in Waterloo Seneca County, NY. Their boys were George W. Dole (1840-1849, buried in the Stark Street Cemetery in the Village of Waterloo, Seneca County, NY, next to his grandfather John Dole and his uncle Henry Dole), James K. Dole (1844-1910, buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Allegan County, Michigan), and Charles T. Dole (born 1850, died unknown).

Thomas, Elizabeth, and at least their son James were Congregationalists.

Charles is described in census records as a "riverman."

I've got some information somewhere showing that James and his brother Charles were on a sloop called the Water Witch that overturned a mile out from Saugatuck Harbor in November 1879 and they were rescued by an August Birkholtz.

Also, he was in some accident with a swing bridge when he was captaining some boat with a Congregationalist girls choir from Chicago that had come to Saugatuck in 1907. The full story is in the August 30, 1907 edition of the Commercial Record.

James was the only one of Thomas and Elizabeth's children who married. He married Jantje "Jane" Bouwmeester who was originally from the Netherlands. They had 4 children-- George (1870-1941), William (1873-1949), Mattie Daisy (1879-1956), and Winnifred May "Winnie" (1878-1953).

Here is Jante/Jane's obit:

"Mrs. James K. Dole, a highly esteemed resident of this village, died on Tuesday morning from bronchitis, of which she had been a sufferer for a year and a half. Deceased was born in the Netherlands, October 20, 1844, and came to this country with her parents at an early age. The family lived at Overisel, this state, for some years, and deceased came to Saugatuck in 1865, where two years later she was united in marriage to James K. Dole. She was the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are now living. The funeral occurred on Thursday afternoon at the residence, Rev. Ireland, officiating."

Evidently, the family was too proud to admit the real cause of Jane's death, which was tuberculosis, not merely bronchitis.

Here is James's Obituary, from the Saugatuk Commercial Record, Friday, June 24, 1910

"James K. Dole died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Peterson in Holland Tuesday morning, June 21 at 10:00 after an illness of eight weeks with paralysis. He was born Oct. 19, 1844 in New York and came to Kalamazoo when a boy after which he moved to Saugatuk where he married Jane Boumaster in 1867. Ever since he has made this his home till about a year ago when he went to live with his daughter in Holland where he passed away. Mrs. Dole departed from this life some ten years ago but he leaves behind four children to mourn for him, Geo. A. Dole of Lombard, Ill, Wm. L. Dole of Enid Oklahoma: Mrs. Eugene Munson of Roswell, Idaho, and Mrs. Oscar Peterson of Holland. The funeral will be held today 2:00 from the Cong'l Church and the remains will be laid to rest in the Saugatuk cemetery."

In 1910, the local paper ran an article about a reunion of civil war soldiers (James had been in the cavalry). It read:

"As the roll of the drum and the pipe of the fife of his comrades were wafted in through the window at the home of James K. Dole of this city, his spirit fled. Mr. Dole, who was 65 years of age, had been ill for some time, and expressed a desire to hear the tramp of the Army in Blue once more before he died."

James was an engineer, a ship's captain, a carpenter, and a carriage-maker, as his main occupations, but I know that he was also a some-time hotellier.

George A. Dole (James and Jane's son) married and was a businessman in Chicago. He and his wife had no children. The census records show that they had at least one servant, so they must have been a bit posh.

William Lloyd Dole (James and Jane's other son) married Effie E. Glenn in Scranton, Iowa. He was a severe alcoholic, and as a result they separated, him leaving her with their three boys-- Ralph, Harold, and Enid. Because of the way that their father was, Ralph and Harold were very strict teetotalers. William couldn't stay anywhere long and was in diverse places such as Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Texas, and Idaho. I found a horrible newspaper article from 1934 that reported that he was arrested in Tomah, Wisconsin. He was, at that time, a transient. He ultimately died in Texas, of complications of diabetes.

Winnifred May Dole married Oscar Peterson, and they stayed in Michigan, living in Holland. They had one child, Winona, born in 1911 and died in 1959. Winona married Everett Elwood, but they didn't have any children.

Mattie Daisy married Eugene Munson, but I don't believe that they had any children.

So out of all of James K. Dole's children, only William has living descendants.

Of William's three boys, Enid, Ralph and Harold, here is who they married:

Enid married Dorothea Scovil. They lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They had a baby girl who lived only a couple hours, and one boy, whose name I won't identify because we're getting toward living people. That boy was married twice and had 4 children-- 2 boys and 2 girls.

Ralph married Veronica B. Kleckner, and they resided in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They had no children.

Harold married Grace Brown. They lived in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he was a shipbuilder and a radio operator. They moved briefly to Florida, but ended up settling in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Harold had a TV and radio repair business. They had 2 girls and 2 boys, one of whom died in 1974 at age 21. Grace and Harold also have grandchildren, of which I am one.

I'll see what else I can come up with. I have done a bit of indexing of Doles and other people at the www.commercialrecord.org site.

Thomas Dole of Saugatuk, MI, refuses to sell liquor in hotel, then loses hotel

Thomas Dole, born 27 August 1812 in Hartford, CT, died 30 June 1889, Saugutuck, MI, was married to Elizabeth, whose maiden name was, I believe, Bennett. They were my great great grandparents.

The 1860 census shows that Thomas and his wife Elizabeth owned and operated a hotel. Fast forward to 1869.

From the Saugatuck Commercial Record, May 15, 1869:

"Union Hotel- Mr. Dole is repairing his bar-room but says he will not keep liquor, living or no living. We glory in his spunk, and have not the slightest doubt of his success. The idea that a hotel can not prosper without selling liquor, is humbug. We can recommend the Union Hotel as a quiet house, with peace and plenty."

From the Saugatuck Commercial record, July 31, 1869 (two and a half months later):

"Mr. Rode is fitting his building, formerly used for hotel business by Thomas Dole, up in good shape, and will open his saloon some time next week."

The 1870 census shows that Thomas and Elizabeth were farming. Poor Elizabeth! Having to go back to farming in her elder years, after a comfortable life in town.

Though there is definitely a gallows humor in all of it.

Andrea "drink a little wine, for thy stomach's sake" Olmanson
Re: Dole - Chicago, IL / Michigan / Troy, NY

Hi,
Delia (Dole) Giles was my gx3grandmother. According to her death certificate from Clarence Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, her father was James Dole of New York. She was reportedly born 28 Sept. 1803 and died of an accidental fall on 23 June 1890. Of the two James Doles in NY in 1800, it looks like the one in Troy with two(?) daughters named Delia is my most likely gx4 grandfather. The younger, Harriet Delia, would be my most likely suspect, though a date discrepancy of six years is a little much even for that period. Where did you get your 1797 date? Do you have a month and day for Harriet Delia?
Thanks.

Thomas Dole of Connecticut (or possibly New York) adn wife Elizabeth

I'm looking for information pertaining to a Thomas Dole who was born in Connecticut in about 1812. His wife's name was Elizabeth, last name unnknown.

The 1850 and 1870 censuses show Thomas was born in Connecticut; the 1880 census says he was born in New York, but it appears that the information was provided by a family member and was therefore errorneous.

The 1850 census says Thomas was a painter (I don't know if that means artist painter or house painter), living in New York. By the time the 1870 census rolled around, he'd moved to Michigan where he and Elizabeth were farming. By 1880, Elizabeth had passed away, and Thomas was a retired farmer living with his adult daughter, her husband, and their kids.

The census records say that Thomas and Elizabeth's parents were all born in the US.

I'd like to know Thomas's parents' names, and Elizabeth's maiden name. Any information would help. Thanks much,

Andrea Baker Olmanson
