I am sorry but I have only just come across your reply. I have since traced the marriage of Emma Dolly to Joseph Geddes at Clapham, Surrey in 1822. Any information prior to this date would be interesting.

Geoffrey Geddes

Mary,
My cousin in Iowa and I have been researching Hartnett-Griffin for a while and just found your post. There is limited information on Michael and Ellen on the internet. Do you have any attional information which might help in tracing either of them back farther? I sent for Michael's death certificate and Iowa did not have one, I am waiting on films from the LDS to see if I can find more information. I haven't done a lot on Ellen's children yet except for Mary Hartnett Griffin which is where the direct relationship is. Please let me know if you have any more information and I will share what I have.

the name "Dolly"

Yes, there is definitely Irish derivations of the name in various spellings from Dolley, Dooley and of course Dolly. Shawna's German derivation that changed from Dahle to Dolly is an iteresting one with some possibilities. England has some Germanic heritage going way back as does the House of Windsor from Saxe-Cobourg. Having said that, the distribution pattern of the name in England is most concentrated in the Southern tip and a few other counties. As the English colonized the World the name "Dolly" was definitely English as were the explorers who assisted in colonizing the Caribbean, US and Canada during the 16th and 17th centuries. I'm born and raised in Canada and grew up playing ice hockey while my parents are from the English speaking Caribbean (Trinidad-Dolly, Jamaica-Brown(Mom's Maiden name). English households as far back as we know.
Trinidad
Indentured servants, labourers and other work has been imported from other countries such as Portugal, Spain, South America and Australasia. Some Drs. are imported from Nigeria. As time changes with education etc., other professions and possibilites emerge for various people.

I am looking for help in tracing members of the Dolly Family. I know that a William Dolly married Ann Watkins and they had a daughter called Emma Dolly who was born in 1797. Emma married a Joseph Geddes in 1822 and their daughter, another Emma, had a son William Joseph Geddes who married an Emma Dolly in 1878.

I believe that there is a family connection between the two Emma's. Can anyone give me information about the other children of William Dolly and his wife Ann?

As you may know it is an English name that was Anglicized by the Irish. Some of the other spellings might be Dolley or Dooley, O'Dooley's might be your friends or relatives.
When the ships sailed to the Western Hemisphere the Great Great Grandfather "Dolly" name landed in Barbados.

There are some Dawleys' mostly in rural Ontario, Canada that may have some native Indian heritage related to your Grandfather. They may or may not be related to your Grandfather's Band or Tribe Heritage.

Ports-Liverpool, London,-I would check Southhampton as well.

My name is Wayne Dolly born in Toronto and grew up in English speaking Canada-Streetsville, Ontario. (named after-Timothy Street-settler/Pioneer)
My Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather etc. came from Trinidad, WI. We had relatives in NY and Virginia since the 1920's. My Mom's maiden name is "Brown" from St. Mary's, Jamaica.

Thank you for your reply. Dolly does not seem like a common name. My gr grandmother, Mary Dolly (Fowler), dau of Wm Dolly and Bridget Skerritt Dolly, was born 1876 in Anbally, Co Galway. This is in the Claregalway area. Her father was a blacksmith and so were her brothers. Wm. Dolly was a son of Mathias(Matthew) Dolly. These Dolly's supposedly came from the Manchester England Area. Mathius Dolly's wife was named Mary Nolan. I live not far from Portland Maine area and there was a Dolley family in Westbrook ,Maine many years ago. There was another Henry Dolly who was insane, not sure if any of these were distant relatives or not.I am talking late 1800's, early 1900's. There is also a cemetery in Scarborough Maine with 2 brothers who were in the Civil War between the states(1861-1865), Enos and ?[cannot remember name} Dolly. Anything you know about your family, I would love to know to save and compare with any notes I already have... maybe can piece something together. Thanks again.

Hi!

And thanks for your quick response.

Here's the scoop. The farthest back that I've gotten thus far is to the early 1900 when William Dolly and Margaret Collins migrated from Ireland. They came on different ships. I'm very new at this but I'm willing to bet that the William Dolly is a decendent of the William Dolly and Bridget.

June of this year is when my bros. and I will have a small reunion. My one brother went back to Naussa in 1960 and is very keen on the Dolly history.

The horse connection is very telling. I have heard that my father worked for a bit at a track back east when he was in his teens(that would be around the 1930's.

The seven Dolly's are in the 1920 census. All are my Uncles.

chat soon?

Joanne

I am interested in information on Skerritt's from Ballinvalley Ireland. The parents were Edward Skerritt and Jane Todd. Three of their children, Edward and his wife Susanna Pattison, Ann and her husband James Patiison(brother to Susanna) as well as George and his wife Maria(maiden name unkown)left Ireland for Canada in about 1845. All three settled in Wellington County Ontario. Rumors have it that another brother also was with them and that he settled in the United States. Any information at all would be helpful.

Thank You.
Cheryl

Gathering info on Skerritt families from Co. Galway. I am from the family of Michael and Mary Cunningham Skerritt(born Circa 1830's) from Kilgill Co. Galway. Many descendants went to Portland Maine, VT< CT< NY<IN maybe KY. Please send me any info you may have if you are a Skerritt. I am working on a huge project and have gathered many turn of the century photos and trees. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hello,
I tried to e-mail you but it did not go through. I would be most interested in any details regarding your Galway Skerritt's. I have a lot of scattered info that may fit into yours. I originally came from Michael and Mary Cunningham Skerritt both born around the 1830's. People have sent me some of their trees so maybe we could compare notes. Could you send me a message to my home e-mail fiddlinsuz@adelphia.net. Thank you Suzan Norton
