Thank for the photo and obit. It really helps. I do not know if Hilda died or divorced Gus Dolph because I have not found her after the 1910 census. Some Finnish surnames changed when coming to the U.S. and within the siblings sometimes they adopted different names and in this families case changing from document to document. So it has been difficult to make sure I have the three full siblings correct. Hilda Marie Johnson (aka Jokinen)was born April 20,1890 in Merikarvia, Finland. Dau of Anton Johansson Rantala-Jokinen and Hulda Gustava Gran. Anton died between 1896-1900. Hulda had remarried to Frank V. Rantanen and had five more children. Hilda had a brother Johan Albert Rantanen-Jokinen and a sister Hilma E. Johnson. Thanks again Dennis

My relative Hilda Johnson was married to Osman Augustus Dolph NOv 18, 1909 in Trumbell County, Ohio. They appear on the 1910 census there. By the 1920 and 1930 Gus Dolph and Flora M. ? live in Bakersfield, Kern, California with a stepson Arthur Randol born 1904 Iowa. Osman A. Dolph died in Kern County, California July 31, 1964. I'm guessing that Hilda and Osman divorced because I cannot find a death record but unsure. Would love to see the photo of Flora and Jesse Randol. Hope this helps, Dennis

I just found out that Calista's mother, Francis Mary Dolf was first married to Augustus C Guynup on Nov. 25, 1871 Clark Co., WI. Ancestry records seem to spell the name Groynup. They were married only a few years, since another record shows her marrying Robert Dake in 1876. I'm wondering if you have found out any more on this. In poking around it looks like Grace Dake was born Feb. 26, 1876 Waupaca, WI. Given the dates, I'm trying to figure out if Grace was Augustus' daughter or the cause of their spliting up? Augustus married a 2nd time and settled in western MA.

Dolphs in New Hampshire

I am seeking information on Thankful Dolph who was born in about 1788 and who married John Barrett in October 1, 1809. They lived in or near Walpole, New Hampshire and had one child John Henry Barrett born July 23, 1814. I have not found any other people named Dolph in the Cheshire county, Walpole, New Hampshire area so I assume she came there from somewhere else. Please email me at barrebarrett@bellsouth.net if you can help.
His first wife died before he came to US with his first five children. His oldest daughter Amelia (Amalia, Amalie) married Gustav Noltze. The next year, Ehrrgott married a widow and they begat Hugo.
Joyce E. Janke Dolph, age 68,daughter of Irene Everett Janke of Erie and the late Chester Janke.

Joyce E. Janke Dolph, age 68, of Harborcreek Twp., passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 5, 2010, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 11, 1942 in Erie, a daughter of Irene Everett Janke of Erie and the late Chester Janke. She had resided in the Erie area her entire life. Joyce was a 1960 graduate of the former Academy H.S. She had been briefly employed as a school bus driver for 10 years by the Harbor Creek and Iroquois school districts. Everyone who knew and loved Joyce also knew that she truly enjoyed life and played much harder than most people work throughout their careers. In September of this year she was able to participate in a seven-day Caribbean cruise with her entire immediate family; a voyage for which her family will always be grateful. Joyce was a member of Simpson U.M. Church. In addition, she was also a member and past president of the Lawrence Park Fishing Club, as fishing was one of her cherished activities. She had founded a bocce league for the Special Olympics of Erie County and was a member of the "Browns' Backers" group at the Sunflower Club. Her hobbies and interests included golfing, bowling, reading, ceramics, 4-wheeling, jet skiing, boating, camping at the family lodge at Grand Valley in Warren Co., playing bingo, scratching instant lottery tickets and going to garage sales. Joyce was a "frequent flyer" to the Presque Isle and Seneca/Allegany casinos. She dearly loved and cared for her beloved pet dachshunds. In addition to her mother, Joyce is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Gary A. Dolph; three daughters: Lisa Skrutsky (Bill), Patricia Zeigler (Steve) and Jenn Purpura (Shawn), all of Erie; seven grandchildren: Emily and Buddy Skrutsky; Kyle, Hannah and Austin Zeigler and Olivia and Hunter Purpura; four sisters: Judy Hewett (Don), Janet Ames (Larry) and Joan Parks (Mike), all of Erie and Jean Bleil (Kenny) of Harborcreek Twp.; two brothers: Arthur Janke (Judi) of Fairview Twp. and David Janke (Linda) of Erie. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. The Dolph family wishes to extend a very heartfelt thank you to very dear and wonderful family friends, Shirley Carideo and Sue and Dan Sutton. Special thanks also goes out to Joyce's health-care aides, Brenda Roth and Patty Owens for their excellent care and loving support. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend the Funeral Service there on Wednesday at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev. George Kennedy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Regional Cancer Center, 2500 W. 12th St., Erie, PA 16505.

Simpson U.M.
Obit of Amos T. Dolph 1895

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

AMOS T. DOLPH
SEPTEMBER 6, 1895

Amos T. Dolph, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this vicinity, died at his home in Charlotte township on Wednesday evening, Sept. 4, at 8:20 o'clock after a painful illness of about five weeks.
He was born in Addison, Stuben county, New York, November 20, 1819. On February 23, 1845, he was united in marriage with Hanna Jane Warren, of Cayuga county, who, with their daughter, survives him. At the age of thirty -seven Mr. Dolph removed to Michigan, locating in Hillsdale county, where he remained until twenty-six years ago, when he came to this county and located on a farm in this township, southeast of this city. Since coming to Illinois he has resided near here, having lived on three different farms within five miles of town.
Mr. and Mrs. Dolph were the parents of two children, one of whom died in infancy. The remaing one, Mrs. Lizzie Tyndall, has resided with her parents for many years, and during her father's last illness was a constant administerer to his comfort.
Five weeks ago yesterday Mr. Dolph was affected by a slight stroke of paralysis, after which he gradually gave away to the effects of heart trouble. As a stricktly honest and upright man "Uncle" Dolph, as he was known to many, had no superiors, and his death will be the cause of many a saddened heart.
The funeral was held this (Friday) morning at ten o'clock from the home, Rev. Tibbetts, of the Baptist church, making the closin remarks, and the remains laid in their last resting place in the Chatsworth cemetery.

I'm at Cortaro and Thornydale, you should be able to find me in the phone book. My mom's family is still back in Williamsburg and have had many enjoyable trips there. Cool that you are going to visit Mary's grave. I posted a query on Findagrave.com to get a pic of her plot. I was told she's at plot 260 at the Woodlawn Cemetery, but there is NO marker there, just some small bits of stone. They were NOT able to find Gardner's stone either.

At the same web site, I was able to download pics of the headstones for Benjamin and Cornelia at the Soldier's home cemetery in Marshalltown. They are my GG grandparents and I descend from their son, James Stewart. I have some pics of his family if you are interested.

I have a lot on Benjamin's line going back to when they arrived in New Amsterdam. I had always been told we were Dutch, I just didn't realize that my Dutch ancestors left the homeland in the 1600's!!

This is going to be fun!!

Somehow I wasn't triggered when you wrote this. Clifford Dolph was the brother of Alexander dolph. At least, that is what it appears like in the little folder I have. I will have to look closer to see who their father was. There are a lot of papers and names scribbled.

Hello! I have a small newspaper clipping about Lora Smith. I attached it here. She is how I figured out the connection between Dolph and the Spillards. The Richmond mentioned in the clipping was my Great Grandfather Lyndley Spillard's sister. Lyndley and a few of his sisters moved to Hollywood, CA from Ohio. It looks as if Lora was sent to Hollywood, doesn't it? Unfortunately, I do not have the date of this newspaper clipping, but thought you would enjoy it anyway. I also am attaching the wedding invitation you requested.

Hello again, I just started back up with my ancestry research. I forgot I even contacted you. Clifford is in my family tree he was the son of my gggrandmoter Lettie Shipman (Kiplinger/Keplinger). He was born april 1, 1890 in Indiana. she was the mother of William Henry shipman who was the Father of my grandmother Lettie shipman who is still alive today.

We just lost my father (her only son) this past March who started our tree research 20 years ago. I have inherited the project and would like to know about Cliffords biologica father, I believe his name may have been Fred? Not sure. i did notice on one of the census records that Lettie listed 9 children born only 5 alive. that would of meant 4 children before Clifford were born and passed. Do you know anything about this at all? I look forward to hearing from you.
~Char

Gerry,
I also corresponded with Carrol Maginis before her passing. She said the info in her first pubishings were incorrect. However we seem to get off on the wrong foot. Don't really know what I said but she was not happy with me. I was inquiring about Suannah Dolph having no documention of her birth, parents, etc. According to the census she was born 1793, VT. Suprisingly, she was consistent in this info. Carol did say Joseph Dolph was her father but that's all she would ofter. I believe Joseph's (b. 1767 CT) is the son of Bennoni DeWolf with siblings of Benjamin, William and Charles. Is any of this familiar and does it refer to the Benjamin you speak of. Sue

Somehow I have inherited a small leather folder that belonged to Clifford Dolph. In it is a marriage announcement of Mary Grace dolph and Charles Birdsall Smith. There are a number of other things:
Is there anyone left who is related to Clifford Dolph??

This is what I have:
1895 Society of the Sons of the Revolution application acceptance AM Dolph
A number of handwritten letters from 1882/83 from AM Dolph to EL Dolph and visa versa
1892 letter on Globe Furniture letterhead from Charles Dolph, Michigan to AM Dolph, Ohio
A 13 page typed manuscript written in 1926 titled “A Long Line of Ancestry: written by a historian at the reunion of the Dolphs and DeWolfs”. Written for the Western reserve Chronicle
A partially completed Daughter of the American Revolution Application for Miss Frances Caroline Dolph, 1910
10 or so newspaper clippings about AM Dolph and other tid bits ranging from 1891 to 1926
Original bible pages for a Samuel Winall which includes a lot of Dolph entries late 1700’s to mid 1800’s
Small Cardstock type photo of a Dolph (quite handsome)
Typed letters of various kinds- late 1800’s
A poem by Henry Chappell that was torn out of a magazine (old)
Wedding invitation for Mary Grace Dolph to Charles birdsall Smith
Typewritten Memorial speech for some Dolph
A Phrenological character assessment, 1878, to AM Dolph (this is so cool) It is about a little girl actually.
These things are in a leather envelope from Cincinnati
Hi Sandee,

I'd love to share info with you. I have very little on Algernon Dolph (and the various spellings of his first name. Like you, I only know of his wife's first name and only 1 child, Clarissa. I have more info on his parents since I actually descend from his dad's brother.

Let me know what you need. I'll take any extra info that you have on his descendants.

Thanks,
Jamie

If you are researching the above surnames then we are related and I have info on these families.. DOLPH married SMITH and SMITH's child married ANDREWS and their child married a BANKS.. Algenon's name was carried on into the ANDREWS line, as a middle name. I dont have a whole lot on Algenon, but what I have I will be glad to share with you. I have been told that Algenon was killed in the Civil War but have no proof of that yet.. I also know that his wife's name was Eliza.. but no surname on her yet.. Contact me if you would like anything that I have researched.. I have a bundle on the BANKS side of the family and some on the ANDREWS and SMITH's..looking forward to sharing.
Sandee
