Maria Dome was born in IN in 1852 - NOT 1851

I have seen posts and family trees that state that Maria Dome (d/o Joseph and Maria Halsted Compton Dome) was born 10 April 1851 in Elkhart Co IN, but that's not possible - her father Joseph and half-brother Isaac left for California in March 1950 and Joseph did not return to Indiana until June 1851. When he returned, he moved his family to Wayne Twp, Kosciusko County where Maria was born on 10 April 1852.

Bobbi D
The 2 Robert Dobsons – KY/IN - bn 1803/1810

There has been some confusion about Robert Dobson bn in 1810. He only appeared in one Fed Census – the 1850 for Harrison Co, IN with his wife Susan & 2 (of 3) sons. The Harrison Co, IN marriage records show a Robert Dobson marrying a Margaret VanArsdal in 1831. It has been reported on the internet that Robert Dobson & Margaret Susan VanArsdal were the parents of the 2 boys. Following is the real information:

Robert Dobson (born 1803 in KY - possibly the son of Joseph or the Robert Dobson whose will was probated in Green Co, KY in 1806)
married Margaret VanArsdal (born 1806 in KY) in Harrison Co, IN on 14 Sept 1831.
The 1840 Fed Census finds them living in Green Co, KY with no children.
The 1850 Fed Census finds them living in Linn, Iowa with no children.

Robert D. Dobson was born 1810 in Kentucky, son of James Dobson born abt 1773 in VA & his 2nd wife, Elizabeth born abt 1774 in VA (daughter of James Dyer).
Susan Dome was born 1812 in KY, daughter of Joseph Dome born 1770 in MD and Mary born 1779 in VA (daughter of John Summers). They had 3 sons:
David Hiram Dobson – born 30 April 1828 in Green Co, KY
Patrick Henry Dobson – born 1830 in Green Co, KY
Joseph Dobson – born 22 Jan 1836 in Harrison Co, IN

There is a mystery tho’ – why did Susan & Robert wait until 7 August 1834 to marry in Green Co, KY ?? Susan WAS underage when the first 2 boys were born - did her father refuse to consent to her marriage ? She named her first son David after her oldest brother & Hiram after her youngest brother. She named her second son Patrick Henry after the American patriot. They married after she turned 21 & they named their 3rd son Joseph after her father. Why weren't any of the boys named after paternal relatives ?

In the 1830 Fed Census for Green Co, KY is Joseph Dome (Mary died in 1822) - living with him are his unmarried children, except Susan.
Susan Dome was living next door with her 2 boys – she claimed she was 20, but she was only 15 when David was born & 17 when Patrick was born in 1830.

Joseph & most of his extended moved to Indiana around 1832/33.
Susan & her boys stayed in Green County until after she married Robert in 1834 and before Joseph was born in IN in Jan 1836. In the 1850 Fed Census for Harrison Co, IN are Robert & Susan Dobson with sons Patrick Henry & Joseph – David married in 1848.

All three sons married a second time & stated on their marriage licenses that their parents were Robert Dobson & Susan Dome.

Anyone know why Robert & Susan waited ‘til 1834 to marry ?
David Dome m Ann Dobson 1825 Green Co, KY

Ann Dobson was the daughter of James Dobson (bn abt 1773 VA) & his first wife, Ann Matthews (d/o William & Jemima Mathews) – married 21 June 1792 in Nelson County, KY. David Dome was the son of Joseph Dome (bn abt 1770 MD) & Mary Summers (bn 1779 VA) married 8 April 1797 Staunton Co, VA.

Ann Dobson was born abt 1801 in Green Co, KY (possibly the twin sister of James Jr.) – David was born abt 1799 VA – they married 6 Dec 1825 in Green Co, KY. David was listed in the 1830 Green Co, KY Fed Census with Ann, a girl under 5 and a boy over 5 but under 10. I don’t have a name for their daughter or for Ann’s son by her first husband, Martin Hawks.

The 1830 census was the last mention of David & his family – they may have died due to one of the many epidemics, but it is possible that they were wiped out by Indians – the widower, Joseph Dome & most of his extended family moved to Indiana in the early 1830’s.

Does anyone know what happened to David & his family ?
Well, a few years have gone by since Bobbi posted her DOME comments. But I want to correct one item, as people will continue to read this thread for years to come.

Elijah Hurst, father of Susan Hurst, did not marry twice. His one and only wife was Mary "Polly" Lindsey. They died within 3 years of each other, and are buried next to each other.

The family had a few Elijah Hursts. Possibly the data for one of the others got grafted into Susan's father's data.

Also, rather than 12 children for Elijah & Polly and 13 children for John Dome and Susan Hurst, I have that the other way around. Elijah and Polly had 13 kids for sure. I only have 12 for John Dome & Susan, but I could be missing one.

But the mistake looked to me like a simple transposition of facts. No worries, happens all the time, but again, I just want to straighten the record out as best I can.

Dome possibly a schoolteacher or
photographer? There are 2 young women & one
young man in the photo. My father-in-law is
in the photo, & it would have been taken about 1912 to 1915 in the area of Kenton, OH.

George Dome/Katharine Spahn - - these were my great great grandparents) and her mother was Elizabeth Basgall (p. John Basgall, Sr. and Elizabeth Summer).

I have found that a lot of times Mary, Marie, Maria, and Magdelena were all used repeatedly down through the generations, often times adding Ann or Anna before or after them as different variations of "Mary". Magdelena could be your relative. She was my great grandfather's neice. Her father, John Dome, being my great grandfather's brother.

My e-mail address is ldome@zelle.com. I would love to hear from you.

The only thing I have on her is she was married
to Clark R. Burnham in Ellis Co.,Kans. I believe
Clark was born July 1871. I know Uncle Clark,
this is what my grandmother called him, was her
favorite uncle. She talked about how he would
sneak in and surprise everyone. He was always
doing things like that. My grandparents grew up
in Ellis and Trego Co. They were Lee Elias Wagoner
and Lucile Inez Solomon. They married 17sep1921,
in Wakeeney, Trego. Ks. Let me know if this
helps any. There are still solomons and wagoners
living up there.
