Hi Miriam,
I have been researching my grandfather,Julio Nieves Velez genealogical line. His maternal grandmother was Marcelina Gonzalez Y Domiche (Domenech?) (b.1838?). I have established thru her children's death certificates that her parents were Maria del Rosa(rio) Domenech y Crespo and Ramon Gonzalez Caceres. She is the grand daughter of Francisco Domenech and Rosalia Crespo. Marcelina married Genero Velez Y Gerena and lived in the town of Guajataca, Quebradillas until she died sometime in 1922.

Do you have any info on Francisco Domenech, possibly from Moca or Mayaguez?
Thanks,
Osvaldo Nieves
I don't know why my postings have been posted as coming from : mag15rosa.

I have posted information on various Domenech families from Puerto Rico in different genealogy web pages. The oldest Domenech I've found in P.R., came in late 1770's. Most came during the XIX century.

Miriam

I see that this is an old message. I have a family member that her name was Antonia Domenech I believe also born in Spain, because she was married to a Benito de Osso from Spain. i believe this would have been in the late 1770's to early 1800's. They had a son named Jose de osso, which in tur had a son that was also named Jose de Osso born in Vinebre Spain on April, 27th 1836.

Hi Miriam,

Thank you for all of this info. I told my mom that you told me Jaime died. She said she was going to call Lydia. Then I told her Lydia died. She was saddened by the news of their deaths. She said Lydia used to call her. She would love to get in touch with you. I was also contacted by Manuel Gontab. We are grateful for all the work you have done.

I am trying to find info on my Mom's mother, Rafaela Cortijo. She was born in 1918. She was an only child and her mom died in childbirth, so she grew up in the Girls Charity School in Santurce. After she had my mom in 1938 by Jaime Domenech, she eventually met and married Nestor Luciano. Rafaela died in 1947 in a plane crash in Florida on her way back to PR. She was 28. My mom was sent to New York and raised by Nestor's family. He died in 1999.

My mom said she thought you lived near her in upstate NY. We emailed you but have not heard back. I hope all is well.

Jeannine,

I met you at my father's funeral. My father was born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Yes, he had blue eyes and was very handsome when young. My half brother, Jaime Oscar, died about two years ago in Puerto Rico of a masssive heart attack. He was about 82-84 years old. His sister, Lydia, also my half sister, died about 4 years ago, in P.R. Lydia and Jaime Oscar were my father's oldest children from a relationship he had when he was very young.

My paternal grandfather, your great-grandfather, was Don Jose Domenech Cortes. He came to Puerto Rico from Palma de Mallorca in 1880. His parents were: Don Pablo Domenech Bibiloni and Do~na Monrerrate Cortes Colom both from Mallorca, Balearic Island, Spain. Colom is the same as Colon but in Catalan. Don Jose and his brothers had an exporting company. They exported goods to Louisiana and the Caribbean, among them cidra ( Spanish cider ). I know my grandfather sold his part to a brother when he decided to remain in Puerto Rico but I don't know if he decided to stay because he had fallen in love with my grandmother or because Mallorca was having internal political problems.

If you want to write me, you may write me directly at miridom@frontiernet.net.

I have a lot of genealogical information on my father's side.

Miriam
My mom is Nilda Iris Domenech. She was born in Ponce in the late 1930s. I think her father was a blue eyed man named Juan Domenech who was a police officer. I only saw him at his funeral in New York. Her mother died in a plane crash when my mom was 9 years old. My mom has a brother named Jaime Domenech who I believe is still in PR. She has other family in PR, but I don't really know them. I don't know where this fits in, but I thought I would put it out there.

I will post them later.

Miriam

Dear Miriam: You have done an excellent job researching the genealogy of the "Domenech" name. You are very knowledgeable and have provided very interesting data. It is my wife's family on her mother side that are Domenech. All from San Sebastian,my wife's grandmother Zoraida Domenech, always claimed the surname was French. I anxiously looked for the posting that you mentioned in your next to last posting in this section, to no avail. Any chance you can post it here? My name is Carlos. Originally from Mayaguez, I've lived in San Francisco 28 years with my wife Susan, daughter Mariel and son Gabriel.

Regards.

Concerning the French origin of the Domenech surname see: http://www.surnames.org/cognoms/domenech.htm.
According to this website, and I quote:" d'un Joan Domenech, que va venir de Francia per servir at rei Jaume I d'Arago".

In French the surname is spelled: Domenece, Domenec,Domenecq,
Domeneque. I found these spellings in Nostre Famille web site.

The fact that Don Juan came to Spain in the XIII century at the time when surnames were being developed, he and his male children were instrumental in the expansion of the Domenech surname in Spain. Besides, upon receiving lands and titles, the Domenech surname came under " Nobilliari and LLinatge of Catalu~na. I have read that he was a Knight ( Caballero ) in France. I checked a map of the Domenech surname in France and they are mostly by the Pyrenees.

Miriam

Other Domenech males that came to Puerto Rico during the XIX century:
-these appear in the death records of the Aguadilla's Catholic Church and are all from Catalu~na
1-Josef Domenech Brunot. He was from Villa de Vays, Catalu~na.
His parents were Salvador Domenech and Rosa Brunot. Josef died in Aguadilla in 1812. He was 78 years old. His wife was Catalina Ferrer. He made a will on April 25, 1808. His will is in Protocolos Notariales, Caja 1327.

2-Pedro Domenec, could be Domenech. I have had my maiden name mispelled as: Domenec, Domeneche, Dominiche, Domenche, etc. Pedro was married to Rosalia Perez. He died on Nov. 08, 1813 at age 60 in Aguadilla, P.R.
3-Jose Domene Roques, must have been Domenech Sometimes the records are blurry and the spelling is off. His parents were Juan and Reparda. He died on 7/25/1795 ( XVIII cent. ) at age 50, single. He could have had illegitimate children.

These all migrated to Puerto Rico from Spain.

I posted information on the Domenech Anazagasti brothers:Juan Maria, Santiago and Jose Pilar on the Ancestry.com Puerto Rico General web site. The posting is dated Sept. 23/2004.
This family was from Aguadilla, P.R. They lived there in the middle of the XIX century. Their descendants ended in Isabela, Quebradillas, Ponce and San Sebastian, P.R. Who knows, these might be descendants of one of the Spaniards I listed in my other posting today.

Miriam
I don't know if Provence once belonged to Spain. It is a small territory between France and Spain. The language is Provencal which has words in Spanish and French. From this area is where Don Juan Domenech, the one that brought the surname to Spain, came from. For Spaniards, the surname is from Catalonia because that's where the surname spread out in Spain and in the New World. Provence used to be a French territory once. I don't know its status nowadays.

My grandfather, Jose Domenech Cortez, was from Spain and he used to say that his father had French ancestry. His father was Pablo Domenech Bibiloni. I don't know if the French ancestry was from Domenech or Bibiloni. Bibiloni might be Corsican.

Here I'm posting info on two Domenech males that came to Puerto Rico during the XIX century. I have others which I'll post later.

1-Juan Domenech Soler, son of Juan Domenech and Marina Soler. He came to Puerto Rico in 1828. He was from Villanueva y Geltru, Barcelona. His wife was Paula Goma, 30 years old. He was 38 years old ( a merchant ) when he came to Ponce, P.R. The travel records are listed as: Licencia de Embarque A.G.I., Ultramar. Leg. 496.
2-Antonio Domenech Valiente came to Puerto Rico in 1860. He was a Spanish soldier, a member of Batallon Cazadores de Cadiz. His military records can be obtained from Archivo General Militar de Segovia, Plaza Reina Victoria Eugenia s/n, 40071, Segovia, Spain. It is possible that he remained and married on the island like my great-grandfather Jose Benito Taboada y Vizoso. He was from the same batallion.

My grandfather, Jose Domenech Cortez, came to P.R. in 1880. From my research, my grandfather seems to be the last Domenech that migrated to P.R. from Spain.

Miriam
Most Puerto Rican Domenech believe their name comes from France. Maybe because it sounds French. However, a brief research on the name indicates its origins are in Cataluna - the name is then Catalan. I must say that France & Spain (Basque) border is not that far from Cataluna and therefore, Domenech could even be a Basque name from their french provinces.

domenech in aguadilla, puerto rico

Does anyone have information on the name Domenech in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico? I found that my paternal great great grandfather was Carlos Igartua Domenech, it is the first appearance of this surname in my research and so far the only, I do not know the names of his parents. I found him in the 1910 census in the barrio of Caimital Bajo (rural) along with his wife Agripina/Agrifina?? Colon Crespo and their children Isabel Igartua Colon, Maria (my great grandmother), Cornelia?, Alejandro, Nicolasa, and Gertrudis Igartua Sanchez. I find him again in the 1920 census in Caimital Bajo (rural) - Camino Vacinal - La Pica, calle de la "duda", this time only with his children. According to the census Carlos was a carpenter. My great grandmother (Maria Igartua Colon) died either in 1922 giving birth to my grandfather or around 1926 when he was 4 years old, the stories conflict in my family. My grandfather was Enrique Acevedo Igartua born to Alfonso Acevedo Feliciano in 1922.

Any information would be helpful! Thanks!

Jason, please read my message dated 01/01/2002 to Deborah. I have researched the Domenech surname. Yes, there are Domenech in Italy, also in Germany, Austria, Cuba, Santo Domingo. Venezuela, etc. It seems that it is of French origin. I found a genealogy of a Domenech in France that went way back to the 11th century, even before Don Juan Domenech came to Spain to fight with King Jaime I de Aragon. At the time, the war of the Reconquest was going on. Don Juan became very prominent in that war and received land and titles from the king. During the beginning of the 13th century Mallorca, where my grandfather came from, was under the rule of The Emir Abu Yahia al Rashid. Don Juan was in part responsible for the victory when King Jaime I of Aragon, also known as the Conquistador invaded Mallorca and won. Mallorca was conquered in 1229-1230. The surname Domenech spread out in Spain after that. ( through his children ) The Domenech surname in Spain was established first in Catalonia, later in Vich and Gerona. Later Juan`s descendants kept moving to Valencia, Alicante and Mallorca. By-the- way, Salvador Dali, the painter was Domenech through his mother. Although he lived in Figueres most of his life and died there, he was born in Barcelona.

Domenech from Valencia, Spain

Hello to all,

My ancestor José Domenech (son of Vicente Domenech and Tomásia Victoria) was born in the parish of Santa Maria del Mar, in El Grau, Valencia, Spain. He moved to Portugal and settled in the town of Portimão in the Algarve where he married Brites Arcângela da Palma in 1751. Later they lived in Lisbon where their daughter Maria Tomásia Domenech da Palma was born in 1754. Maria Tomásia moved to Portimão at the age of five. As far as I know, she was the last Domenech in this line.

I would greatly appreciate any information on the Domenech family in Valencia and/or Portugal.

Greetings from Portugal,

Rui Pereira
Name and history

hi all,
My family is from Puerto Rico I am son Of Luis Ramon Domenech, His father Rene Domenech who I know has quite a few siblings. Family hails from Mayaguez. I have been told by an uncle that two brothers left france and headed to spain for what reason I don't know. appearently though the brothers had a falling out and one left for the "new world" and came to puerto rico which is the line of my family, I have also heard though that the name goes back to about 1000 A.D. Italy. If any one can verify or tell of other family lines (major splits) please post.
