I am not sure about how many redheads there were in the family, I do know that Chris (from Unionville) was my grandfathers brother (my great uncle). My grandfather
name was Lewis Mathias Dommer , 1900 - 1985.

Wow, that is interesting. It sure is a small world. My folks and I used to live near Centerville, Iowa not far from the Chariton River Bridge. I have been to Unionville quite often. We lived there in the 1980's so we never got to meet Michael. I did hear of another Chris Dommer who lived around Unionville. There was a George Dommer who lived near Blakesburg, Iowa who lived on the Blue Grass Road and used to sharpen plow shears for my grandfather. Mom says he was a cousin but she don't remember who his parents were. Are there redheads in your family? My mother, my grandfather, great grandfather (Christof), great uncle and his boys were redheads.

I called my dad and asked him if he knew or remembered any of his great uncles, unfortunately he didn't. My Great Grandfather died a year before I was born so I never saw him. I have seen pictures of him he was a common sight in Unionville, Iowa. He delivered mail from the rail station. The last great aunt I had died last year, I wish I had talked to her about our history. Dad has the lantern that Michael Dommer used when he worked at the rail station.

As a side note, I contacted a gentleman in Germany whose name is Michael Dommer, evidently the Dommer's own a manufactering company of some kind in Stuttgart. He mentions that his family was from southern Germany which could be in area you mentioned. I think insteat of Bottenacker it is Rottenaker. I would be very interested in finding out more about our family tree. Thanks

Thanks, that would be great! Christof was born April 27, 1867 Bottenacker, Donaukreis, Wuerttemberg Germany. He was also known as Chris Domer. The family mainly settled north of Bloomfield, Blakesburg and Ottumwa. Some of the family dropped the M in Dommer. If you have any questions you would like know about the Dommer's, I'll do my best to answer. They never said too much about their history, so I am still researching.

I don't remember any mention of Christof, I do know that my grandfather (Lewis) had a brother named Chris, maybe he was named after Christof. I will ask my father (he's 82) if he remembers any mention of Christof, I guess Christof would have been dad's great-uncle.

That's fantastic!! I think we are probably cousins. Michael Dommer was Christof Dommer's brother. I heard of Lewis Dommer that had lived around Albia but didn't know how we were related. Christof Dommer was my great grandfater. He married Mary Koebke and lived north of Bloomfield Iowa. I am guessing that Christof disappeared around 1925-1930 sometime. The family thought he might have gone back to Germany or one of the surrounding towns. Did anyone mention him on your side of the family?

I know this is an old post, but my Grandfather was named lewis dommer and lived around the albia iowa area all his life. His father was Michael Dommer from Unionville, who died in 1952. He is buried in the unionville iowa cemetary.

I am a cousin to Estey and Audine Domer. Their father was married to my aunt, Kathryn Hilliard, the same name as my mother, Kathryn Snyder Hilliard. My father was Chester Arthur Hilliard a brother to Estey Domer's first wife. I didn't know him. I know that they live near Oil City, Pa. I have an exact address somewhere for Estey, my cousin. I'm so interested in more info about our ancestors. I have a picture from the Franklin, Pa newspaper of Estey and his wife from their 50 yr. anniversary. I know that he must have some info for you. Mail has been sent. My information seems to match your information. With all of the information I have, and different locations, Austria and Czechoslovakia I believe his draft card would be most accurate. My reasoning behind that is because it is very likely he dictated the information himself and he signed it.

His daughter Katherine is my maternal grandmother and I know very little of her. I believe I saw her only once as she lived in Ohio and not Pennsylvania. I THINK that is correct. All I really remember is a vague recollection of getting on a train.

Thank you alot for any help you can give me.. and I'll share what little I know though it's very likely you already have all that information.

Yes, I am still here. Andrew is very sketchy for me as well. We need to compare what we do have regarding him to see if we can make some headway. Andrew is my MIL's grandfather. I hope you are still there... I have been attempting to research Andrew Domer, married to Grace Coleman. Andrew was born in Todrac, Austria. One of the children they had was Katherine who would be my grandmother.. but I find little information beyond Andrew Domer or about Katherine other than what I know personally.. which is very little.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Does Domer = Doemer ??

I am just curious as to the origins of the two names. I have traced my family back to about the 1780's to a place called Rahrbach, Westfallen, Prussen. (Prussia) The name was spelled with the umlaut "o", as Dömer. My 4th great grandfather, Johann Peter Dömer was a master tailor. His son, Peter Anton Doemer, was the fifth child, and fifth son of Johann and his wife Aloysia Wüsthof. Peter came to the Detroit Michigan area in 1852. When he did, the name was translated as Doemer. Is it possible that members of that same family may have had their names translated with out the "e", or just as Domer?

Information I have: (1) Marriage Tuscarawas Co. OH 8 Sep 1822 to Henry J. Deitz.
(2) Children: Jacob,Michael,Judith,Susanna,Benjamin,Lydia,Peter,Catharine,Elisabeth,Sarah,Mary Magdaline,Josephine,and Henry.
(3) Gravestone in German Reformed Cemetery, Shanesville, OH: Died 12 Mar 1848 aged 46 yrs (b. ~1802 in PA?)
(4) From 1884 History of Tuscarawas County: Frederick Domer came from Somerset County, PA in 1807 soon followed by his brothers George, Jacob and Michael.
(5) First tax duplicate of Tuscarawas county (1808-1809): Frederick, George, Jacob, Mary and Michael on list in Goshen Twp.
Any suggestions or information gratefully accepted.

Donald and Emma Domer(s) - IN, IL??

I am seeking information on Donald and Emma Domers and/or their descendents. They are shown as the last known owners of a small piece of property in SE Central Illinois that was abandoned many years ago. About 20 years ago a well-meaning neighbor took over paying the taxes. The last known information was at that time that either one or both of the couple lived in a nursing home in Terre Haute, Indiana. Any information on this couple would be greatly appreciated. Hi Michael, I am also looking into my Dommer family history. I might be able to help you a little bit, but I am still in the process of searching like you are. I'm not sure if this is the same Michael Dommer you are looking for. But I know of an great-great uncle Michael Dommer that lived in around in the Unionville, Iowa area. He is believed to be buried in the cementery in Unionville, Iowa. He was born Jan. 28, 1865 in Bottenacker, Donaukreis, Wuerttemberg Germany and died Dec. 16, 1952. Not too much is known about the Dommer's in the Centerville, Iowa area but I just knew they were cousins. Christof Dommer is my great grandfather, and Michael Dommer was a brother of Christof Dommer. Christof Dommer had six children and one of them was Fred Dommer which was my grandfather. Fred Dommer lived west of Ottumwa Iowa. Michael Dommer's parents were Matthias Dommer and Margaret Braungardt. The children they had were; Mattias, Michael, Christof, Christine, Peter, Marie, Katherine, Barbara, Margaret, and two unknown children. Hope this helps a little bit. Do you have any information on Christof Dommer? Can't seem to find any information on what happened to him. He disappeared in 1930's or before.

Samuel Domer was born on 3 Sept. 1818 in Sharpsburg, Washington, Maryland. He was the son of Henry Domer and Rosannah Deibert. On 10 March 1853 he married Rachel Varner in Ogle County, Illinois.

Rachel Varner was the daughter of Cynthia Ann Knox and William Henry Varner. She was born on 3 Jan. 1829 in Fayette County, Ohio.

Samuel and Rachel had 8 known children:

Martha A. or Frances (it has A. on her tombstone) born 15 Feb. 1854. Married to Charles C. Reber or Reaber on 19 Sept. 1875. Died at the age of 22 on 15 Feb. 1876 and is buried at Camling also known as Bald Hill Cemetery in Ogle County, Illinois. Her headstone includes the names of her grandmother, Cynthia Varner, her father, Samuel Domer, his first wife, Elizabeth, Martha's mother, Rachel and a sister, Lydia Ann.

Andrew Jacob born 29 July 1857. Married Ida. L. Lewis.

William Henry born 21 April 1859. Married 19 Dec. 1881 to Mary Catherine (Kate) Alter. Died 23 Jan. 1935. Buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Morris, Ogle Co., IL.

Samuel Oscar born 21 may 1864. Married on 25 Nov. 1889 to Emma C. Shuber. Died 1945. Buried at Buffalo Cemetery Buffalo Township, Ogle Co., IL.

Franklin V. born 30 Sept. 1868. Died 1932 in Iowa.

Frederick W. Born 29 April 1870. Married Ann C. Fridley on 2 April 1893.

Sarah A. Domer born 10 July 1873. Married William W. Koontz on 5 Oct. 1898. Died 1940 and is buried at Plainview Cemetery in Mount Morris, Ogle Co., IL.

Lydia Ann Domer born 27 Nov. 1855. Died 10 Sept. 1862 at the age of 6 . Buried at Camling Cemetery, Ogle County, IL.

Can go back several generations on the Knox side of the family. Would like to share information and photos.

My seventh great grandfather was August Strefer, his son was Johan Joaquin Stroeuer who married Anna Dorthea Domer. Their daughter was Catherine Stroeuer, Along the line some where is was changed to Straeffer. Johan Joaquin was from Bademunder, Hanover, Germany.. Hope this helps. Harry

Boy, sometimes the luck is with you. Your G Grandfather Merle S. Domer, born in Indiana October of 1881, was the 1st child of Benjamin H. Domer & Alice N. _____. Their second child was George A. Domer, born May 1884.

Benjamin H. Domer was your GG Grandfather and he was born March 1858. Alice was born December 1857. They were both born in Indiana.

Benjamin H. Domer was the son of George Domer and his 2nd wife Lydia/Lidia. George was your GGG Grandfather and was born June 29, 1817 in Tuscarawas County Ohio. Lydia was born February 1824 in Ohio and died after 1900. In 1900 she was living alone in Kosciusko County Indiana.

George Domer was the son of John Frederick Domer and Elizabeth Bollinger. Type in Frederick Domer on this message board and you'll find tons of info on him in Ohio. He was known by Frederick Domer and he was born April 20, 1776 in Frederick County Maryland. Elizabeth was born in about 1784 probably in PA .

I am descended from Frederick's Daughter Anna C. Domer, so we are distant cousins. If you'd like more info feel free to write.

Carol E Domer of Dekalb County Indiana was killed January 1, 1943, in the South Pacific during World War II. He is officially listed as missing or buried at sea. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Jacob M. Domer and Margaret Bollinger

Looking for information on Jacob M. Domer (1830 - 1872), his wife Margaret Bollinger (married 1850) and their three children. I know of one son, John, and a daughter, Sarah Jane (my gggrandmother). There was another son. I have no dates for any of the children, nothing on Margaret, and no idea what Sarah's husband's first name was. His last name was Pritts. They lived in Barkeyville, Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Domers in Iowa. there were 10 of us Domer children. All married now with families , there were 4 boys among us. one of those had 6 children 4 were boys, one had 1 daughter, all the sisters had many children who of course were not Domer by name but descended.
