Over 600 Men Now on Clan Donald DNA Project Tables

ess than seven months after becoming the first family-based genetic genealogy project to post results for 500 participants, the Clan Donald DNA Project is now the first family-based genetic genealogy project to post results for 600 participants. This Y chromosome DNA project is open to all men with surnames suggesting Clan Donald ancestry and all men who have reason to suspect that their line came from Clan Donald territory. Approximately 370 men in the project have surnames that are variants of the name MacDonald. Some of the most commonly used variant names within the project are:

McDonald, with 142 participants (+1 Mc Donald)
MacDonald, 105 participants (+8 Mac Donald and +4 Macdonald)
McDaniel, 42 (+2 McDaniels)
McConnell, 29 (+1 McConnel)
Donaldson, 15 (+1 Donelson)

Early in the clan's history, the clan chiefs took the surname MacDonald, and many men with MacDonald variant surnames today are their descendants, but there are also many such men who are not male line descendants of that first MacDonald chief. Some are descendants of men who joined the clan upon marriage and took MacDonald as their surname. Since MacDonald and Donaldson both mean “son of Donald”, there were many men who adopted these surnames in honor of their fathers. In some cases, MacDonald or another variant surname was later anglicized to Donaldson.

Because the Y chromosome is passed from father to son with little change from generation to generation, Y chromosome DNA testing allows us to sort out the Donaldson and other MacDonald variant surname lines within the project. Right now, there are 30 separate groups of men in the project, and 29 of those groups include men with MacDonald variant surnames. These groups were created by comparing DNA test results, and any man who joins the project will be placed in a group. Generally, the men most closely related to a man will be found in the same group, and there is a way to compare test results using the project tables that makes it easy to find the men most likely to be related to a given project member.

Some men find that they are members of relatively large groups of men that are rather closely related. Generally, these groups descend from kings and clan chiefs whose families have had great reproductive success. Other men find that they are members of smaller groups which may be very closely related. Still others find that their results make it difficult to classify them, and are placed in a catchall group of potential cousins which may be large or small. Some may be placed in a catchall group because they don't have close matches within the project. Others may have results that are ambiguous. For many of those, further testing would make it possible to classify them into smaller groups. Many men in these catchall groups do have matches, and from time to time, it will be possible to form new groups for these men and their matches.

Results for the Donaldson men in the project show a very interesting pattern. While none of them have been classified into the two largest family groups in the project, a third of them are classified as relatives of the famous Irish king Niall of the Nine Hostages. Niall probably lived about 1600 years ago, and his family has produced many descendants. Traditional Irish genealogies link a number of Irish surnames to male line descendants of Niall, and researchers at Trinity College in Dublin discovered that a very large number of Irish men with similar Y chromosomes revealing shared ancestry includes a large proportion of men with these surnames. Because DNA mutations accumulate gradually over time, researchers can estimate how long ago the group was formed by looking at the amount of variation in Y chromosome test results within the group. Estimates for the age of this group suggest that Niall or a relatively close ancestor of his was the founder. Taken together, all of this information convincingly links men whose DNA matches the group profile to Niall and the others in the group.

Most of the Donaldson men classified as members of the Niall group have very close matches with others in the group. Two of the Donaldson men and a Donelson match each other perfectly, suggesting a very recent common ancestor for the three men. Another man has results for 12 DNA markers, and these 12 marker results are not enough to conclusively say that he is closely related to anyone, but he has 14 perfect matches within the group. The estimated number of generations back to his common ancestor with each of those men is 15, but it's probable that some of those cousins are more closely related and some of those cousins are more distantly related than those statistics suggest. The remaining two Donaldson men within the group have borderline matches that probably share a more distant common ancestor.

You can find out more about the family of Niall of the Nine Hostages using your webbrowser and here are two links to get you started:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niall_of_the_Nine_Hostages

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=13...

What can these new DNA research techniques do for these researchers and other genealogists in general? One thing they can do is reveal relationships with cousins when a paper trail is lacking. One on one comparisons with such cousins don't reveal precisely how two men are related, but finding these connections is very rewarding and can help genealogists focus their paper trail research on true relatives. In some cases where paper trail research is unsuccessful in establishing exactly how two matching men are related, it is possible to deduce their relationship by testing other men from the same family with paper trails and analyzing their results. As more advanced testing techniques become available, it will be possible to say more and more about a man's line based on his DNA test results alone, and combining these techniques with paper trail research will lead to even more breakthroughs.

One way that DNA testing can help researchers narrow their search is by providing clues to where their families lived years ago. If multiple DNA matches for their line lived close together, there is a good chance that their family came from the same location. Men in the Niall group are heavily concentrated in northwestern Ireland, but by looking at their closest DNA matches, researchers might be able to narrow down their search to a more specific location there or in one of the other areas where Niall's descendants have lived.

Using DNA matches to narrow one's search geographically can also help researchers outside the larger family groups. Earlier this week I was able to develop a pretty promising lead for a Whitmore researcher who had posted a query on the DNA-Newbie list at yahoogroups about the seeming lack of matches for her Whitmore cousin. Her case was a little tricky because her line probably experienced an unusual mutation event that changed the DNA profile for their line substantially. Once I realized this, we were able to identify two men as her cousin's most promising DNA matches. Neither of them shared the Whitmore surname, but one's line traces to Langholm in the county of Dumfriesshire in Scotland, and the other's line traces to the neighboring county of Roxburghshire. The county line between the two lies about 5 miles from Langholm, so we now have reason to suspect that her Whitmore family was close to there before the adoption of surnames in that area.

What about the other Donaldson men in the project? Another third of them have been placed in the catchall group for a genetic grouping called Haplogroup R1b. The men in any given haplogroup all descend from a common ancestor. The most recent common ancestor of the men in Haplogroup R1b lived thousands of years ago. Some of his descendants within the project have been classified into smaller groups, which include the family of Niall of the Nine Hostages. Others are in the catchall group. One of these men has results for 12 markers, and his closest matches are within the Niall group, but the 12 marker results are ambiguous as to whether he really is a member of that group. Another Donaldson has a similar match with a Donald. Because the Donald only has results for 12 markers, it is not clear whether they belong together in a smaller subgroup. Two of the others have borderline matches with men whose surnames are not variants of MacDonald, and these men may or may not share a common ancestor who lived since the adoption of surnames. Another man has a near match with a Donaldson in a smaller group, but the test results are far enough apart that it's possible their most recent common ancestor lived a very long time ago.

The remaining Donaldson men within the project are found in three groups. One of these is the small group mentioned above. This group is known within the project as the Light Brown group, but it is also called the Frisian group. This name refers to the prevalence of this group in areas of the European Atlantic coast near the Netherlands. The two Donaldson men in this group are each other's closest matches with an estimated number of generations to their most recent common ancestor of thirteen.

One of the Donaldson men is a member of a haplogroup called R1a. This group is distantly related to the R1b group, and the R1a group includes the descendants of the clan chiefs, but this man is not closely related to the clan chiefs at all. Some R1a men in the British Isles descend from the Vikings. R1a is still found in Scandanavia, but it is more prevalent in eastern Europe and parts of Asia. It's possible that this man's ancestors took the surname Donaldson after immigrating from one of these locations to an English-speaking area. He does not have close matches within the project at this time.

The two remaining men belong to a haplogroup known as Haplogroup I1, which is known within the project by its old name, I1a. This haplogroup is associated with Viking and Anglo-Saxon invaders of the British Isles. One of these men has matches with a MacDonald and a Connell, while the other has no matches within the project.

Whether a family has matches for their line within the project or not, family members may want to ask known or suspected male line cousins to test. Having results for more than one known cousin can tell a family more about the markers of their most recent common ancestor. Knowing more about the most recent common ancestor's marker values can be very helpful when making comparisons with other DNA matches who don't share a known common ancestor.

You can find out more about this project by going to the welcome page of the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/.

Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher
Albert Donaldson m. Florence Magdeline Fischer: Ohio

I have Donaldson family in Ohio that we have not been able to find anything on! (getting frustrated)I have a great grandfather who's name is Albert Donaldson that seems to be non-existant. His application for a marriage license 8/1901 stated that he was a 21 year old machine hand,(dob 1880-81) he was marrying Florence Magdeline Fischer 20 years old and that application was filed in Franklin, Ohio or it could be Franklin County. His parents names were Henry Donaldson and Annie (Miller) Donaldson. Albert and Florence had one son, Edward Lee Donaldson,my grandfather. The story we have is that when my grandfather was around 2 years old, Albert his father, left because his wife, Florence would not leave her parents. We have not been able to find any siblings that Albert may have had or any other family from Henry and Annie. Is there anyone out there that has any information? e-mail dclarktools@verizon.net Thank you.
Hannah Donaldson married James Reid,I believe they lived in Ayrshire. Their son Alexander was my ggrandfather and born in 1827. We believe Alexander came to Australia in 1850 on the "Hydaspes" with a wife named Jean Brown or Jean Beckwith and arrived in Sth Australia. Within 18mths or so, he remarried an Ann Mathieson. We do not have any background on either Jean or Alexanders family James and Hannah.

does anyone have anything they can help me with.

Desperatly seeking Ireland Donaldson Roots

We are about to give in and give up on our searches. But I am doing a last final attempt to locate our Ireland roots.
Mose/Moses Donaldson ( & vairous spellings of such surname) as per the writings of the brother to our 2nd great-grandfather,was born in Ireland no mention of location, arrived in Maryland, USA ,then left his family and moved to Ohio. His son, Zachariah ( which is our line) went to western Pa and from there the descendants were born. Areas are Huntingdon, Fulton and Somerset Co.,PA USA.
Cousin has already been in contact with the Ohio Donaldsons and we have that info there. But no info prior to what I have printed here. Time frame for Mose/Moses, unsure of. However the apprx date of birth of Zachariah is 1795 in Maryland,USA. Found family in Anne Arundel Co., MD,USA
Can anyone connect with the above, or help direct me in my searches for Ireland? any help is most helpful, and I thank you in advance.
Who was Ella E. Donaldson “of Washington, DC”?

Who was Ella E. Donaldson “of Washington, DC”?

When was she born, who were her parents, and when did she die?
Why was she in Wernersville, Penn. at the time of her death?

Douglas Atwater Brown was my great-grandfather, by his second wife – Sue Youtsey (1851-1939. Douglas was born on February 12, 1854 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Co, OH and died on November 12, 1919 at Ft. Thomas, Campbell Co., KY (across the river from Cincinnati).

Ella E. Donaldson, his first wife is something of a mystery to me.
They were married on Feb. 14, 1883 (Valentines Day) in Washington, DC (I have a copy of the “Record of Marriage” from the Court House). Ella Donaldson then dies, date unknown, but must be before 1886, in Wernersville, Berks Co.,(?) PA (see below). They had no children that I am aware of. The only new information gleaned from the “Record of Marriage” is the minister and the marriage location. The minister is “F. D. Power”, who is almost certainly Frederick D. Power (1851-1911) who was the Chaplain of the House of Representatives at that time.
See: http://www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/texts/jtbrown/coc/COC1347.HTM

Douglas Atwater Brown is listed in the 1880 US Census for Washington, DC, where he is a clerk for the Adams Express Company. Listed as 26 years old, single, and born in Ohio.

Douglas Atwater Brown is also listed in Boyd’s Directory of the District of Columbia for each year between 1880 and 1885. But he is not listed for the years 1878, 1879 and 1886.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quoted from: Family memoirs: Atwater, Butler, Brown. 1915.
500 Men Now on Clan Donald DNA Project Tables, Tables and Trees Updated

Rapid Growth in Project Leads to Results

Several years ago, Mark MacDonald started the Clan Donald DNA project for those with Clan Donald surnames such as Donald, Donaldson, McConnell, McDaniel, McDonnell, MacDonald, and McDonald, as well as other men who could trace their male lines to Clan Donald lands. Later Doug McDonald joined the project as co-administrator and took responsibility for maintaining the project website.

Yesterday Doug McDonald posted results for the 500th man added to the Clan Donald DNA project tables. I believe that this makes the Clan Donald DNA project the first surname project to reach this milestone. The project has been around for some time, and the recent growth of the project has been extremely rapid. I started to write down numbers in June. On June 8, there were results for just 434 men on the project tables, so the project has grown 16% in less than 4 months. Favorable press coverage of DNA genealogy earlier this year has contributed to the success of the project, but the sustained commitment of Mark MacDonald and Doug McDonald to the project made this possible.

Last year, the project website was revamped and the project results were made public. This resulted in extremely rapid growth in the project, and Doug has updated the project database many times over the last year. During the last couple of weeks, Doug has again revised the website to reflect the recent growth. Addition of results for new project members to the tables is just a part of this revision. From time to time, I have seen that Doug has reclassified men on the tables, i.e., he has been able to move them from one category to another. Generally the newer category is a smaller, more closely related group than the category to which the man was previously assigned. Last week he was able to do this for a large number of men in the project.

The relationship trees have also been updated and there is a lot of change in their branch structure. Many of us have some of the same closest neighbors on the trees as we did before, along with new neighbors who joined the project more recently. However, there are some people whose positions on the new tree relative to many of their old neighbors have changed substantially. For instance, on the old R1b 37 marker tree, D. E. McConnell and J. L. McConnell were on the same branch. On the new tree, they are far apart, and D. E.'s closest McConnell neighbors are C. W., R. H., and M. F. McConnell. The branch for the Green group related to Niall of the Nine Hostages has also shifted substantially. There are trees for 25, 37, and 67 markers, and those of you who are already in the project with results for 25 or more markers will want to find yourselves on the new trees.

For me the changes in the trees and the classifications into subgroups are a clear sign that the growth of the project is leading to an increased understanding of the relatedness of project members. This process will continue as more men join the project. Kit counts for the Clan Donald project and some of the surname variants associated with it indicate that this rapid growth is continuing, accelerating the growth of the project.

Thanks go to Doug and Mark, whose hard work and dedication have made the success of this project possible. You can explore the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAmain.htm.

For those who are unfamiliar with Y chromosome DNA genealogy and would like to learn more, the Clan Donald project website is very helpful and also has links to many other informative websites on the subject. For some posts related specifically to the Clan Donald DNA project, you can look on the McConnell board for posts that I have made about the project this year.

family of Mary Alice (Donaldson/Donelson)Dennis

Hello to all on the list. My name is Nola Thacker. I am researching my grandmother. I never knew her (she died in 1953, I was born in 1952)
I have found a marriage record for her in Rowan county in 1896. It lists "Mary Donelson marrying RC Dennis" RC Dennis was my grandfather.

However, I can find no more info on Mary Alice's maiden name or her previous married name (Donaldson may have been one of those names; Lawson might be another.)

Anyway, if anyone has a Mary Alice Donaldson, born abt. 1871 (or 1874) and married to an RC Dennis in Rowan County in 1896, please contact me.
Nolabert@aol.com
Nola Thacker
Austin, TX
She would have had two additional children prior to marrying my grandfather; Floyd, born 1891, and Emma, born 1893. I don't have a confirmation on those children's last names. After Mary Alice and RC (RC stands for Rubin Calvin) married, they just lister her two children from the previous marriage under the name of Dennis.

I have a friend who's looking in my grandmother's probate file to see if that will shed any light. Her death certificate didn't help, and neither did the marriage licenses of four of my aunts (her daughters) Not one of my aunts knew who their grandparents were! They didn't know my grandmother's maiden name!
Strange, but true. So, I'm asking the list to check you info to see if you get a match.

Thanks for helping me.
Nola Thacher

I would love to exchange data on this ancestor. At the time of his son James' marriage in 1830, he was a saddler in Haddington. He himself had married Margarate Carmichael at North Leith, Midlothian, in 1800. She was born in Appin near Ballachulish, in Argyle.

I think he may be the John Donaldson who was born in 1763 in Prestonpans and also the John Donaldson who was living in Innerwick Castle in the 1841 Census. In adult life, he was a Baptist.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
(I have located birth and death records for Fannie!) However, before marrying Stone, Fannie gave birth to my grandmother, MAY BEATRIX HEAD, sometime around 1890, near S.F., CA. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a birth record for May, nor any record of Fannie's marriage to a Mr. Head, if any. (To complicate matters, May remarried someone after she divorced my grandfather, and I cannot locate her death record since I have been unable to determine her name at the time of her death!)

I'm looking for ANY INFO on Fannie's birth of her daughter, May Beatrix Head, around 1890, probably in Northern California.

My great-aunt Effie McGee married a Donaldson (first name unknown) sometime between 1930 and August 1932. She is believed to have died in late 1932 or 1933. She resided in Picher, OK (Ottawa County) during this time. The address was 408 Emily Street in Picher. Her final resting place is unknown to me, but believed to be in Ottawa County. Does anyone have records of a (very) of a Donaldson- McGee marriage during this time frame? Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Daniel and Kary (Moorehead) Donaldson Bible

I recently found a transcription of the family bible of Daniel Donaldson and Kary Moorehead Donaldson who were born in Virginia in the mid 1700's and died in Warren County, Kentucky in the early 1800's. The transcription was in a folder in the Kentucky Historical Society archives in Frankfort. It lists the births of all of their children and then the birth and marriage records of their son James Donaldson and his subsequent descendants. The transcription states that "This Bible is now in the possession of Jean Donaldson Watson of Monteagle and Memphis, Tenn. and copied by Virginia Gattney Prichard (Mrs. James K.) Polk in Inverness, Miss., May 26, 1956.

Does anyone know of the location of this Donaldson bible or any family members of Jean Donaldson Watson? I am very interested in tracking down this valuable information about my Donaldson ancestors. Thanks,

Brantley Clegg

This John Donaldson along with atleast 2 sisters Elizabeth b-Dec 26 1830, and Janet b-Feb 22 1833 in Edinburgh were the orphaned children of Alexander Donaldson and Catherine France, m-July 28 1828 in Edinburgh. They were placed in care in Glasgow I believe. I have a hunch this John Donaldson was the father of John Donaldson (The Cooper) referred to in a post below,b- abt. 1854.Could anyone help me solve this mystery and make a positive connection one way or another? Any info on this John "the orphan", such as who his wife was or his children etc would be of a great help.Thank you again.

Hello, I'm back. After a break from internet genealogy for a while I have reopened my former account, and e-mail.
I'm still looking for info on my g/grandfather John (the Cooper) donaldson. He married Margaret McAllister in Campbelltown Argyll and they had 8 children Janet, Catherine, Margaret, Elizabeth Alexander, Archibald, Duncan and my grandfather John Donaldson. I have seen the 1881,91 and 1901 censuses as well as their marriage registration but still I haven't gained any further info. He stated on his marriage paper that his father was John Donaldson, deceased and his mother Catherine, deceased. I have a theory that he was the son of another John Donaldson born in Edinburgh who was orphaned with his 2 sisters, Janet and ?, does anyone have any info or could do a look up for his birth for me? PS I am tring to get a hold of Helen Kennedy a former poster on this sight, to no avail, does anyone have her current e-mail address? Thank you.

DONALDSON, MICHAEL A.; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient - WW I

http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohwwi.htm

DONALDSON, MICHAEL A.
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company I, 165th Infantry, 42d Division. Place and date: At Sommerance-Landres-et St. Georges Road, France, 14 October 1918. Entered service at: Haverstraw, N.Y. Born: 1884, Haverstraw, N.Y. G.O. No.: 9, W.D., 1923. Citation: The advance of his regiment having been checked by intense machinegun fire of the enemy, who were entrenched on the crest of a hill before Landres-et St. Georges, his company retired to a sunken road to reorganize their position, leaving several of their number wounded near the enemy lines. Of his own volition, in broad daylight and under direct observation of the enemy and with utter disregard for his own safety, he advanced to the crest of the hill, rescued one of his wounded comrades, and returned under withering fire to his own lines, repeating his splendidly heroic act until he had brought in all the men, 6 in number.
