Re: Dennis Donavan, New Orleans LA

My great-grandfather is S. John DONAVAN, b ~1837 Ireland. He arrived in the U.S. about 1850 during the Potatoe Famine. The first record I have is the 1860 census of Tishomingo Co. MS, when he was working for the RR. He married Nancy Emeline MURPHY in McNairy Co. TN in 1862. They had 10 children, the last 3 being born in Dallas Co., TX after 1880. A family story says he came to America with his mother, her sister,& two of his brothers, one of whom was married. Since my records are nearer New Orleans than NY, I have guessed they arrived in New Orleans--Can you help me find some ancestry for my John DONAVAN? He could not read or write and his name is misspelled Dunevan, Dunnegan, etc. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Death of OF P. P. DONNAVAN (DONNOVAN) in CA in 1859

Not related but may be interest to someone who is.

Vern D
////////////////////
Transcribed by Dee Sardoch deesar@frontiernet.net
////////////////////
Weekly Stockton Democrat
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
Sunday, 17 July 1859

MAN SHOT at BEAR VALLEY -- The Mariposa 'Star' gives the following account of a fatal shooting affair at Bear Valley:

On Saturday last a man by the name of P.P. DONNAVAN was killed by another by the name of KING, at Mr. HALL's boarding house, at the Pine Tree vein. The difficulty occurred at the dinner table, and originated in a
dispute about hauling quartz. The lie passed, when DONNOVAN [spelled 2 ways] struck his opponent. Plates and other missiles were then used, and finally they clinched. DONNOVAN, being the stoutest man, got the advantage, and beat KING pretty badly, when KING called on the spectators to separate them.

Afterwards they renewed the quarrel and DONNOVAN struck him again. KING seized a large carving knife, and DONNOVAN told him if he wanted to fight with weapons he would fight him that way, and started for his pistol. On his return, KING had also procured one, and the shooting commenced. 6 shots were fired, 2 of which from KING's pistol took effect on DONNOVAN -- 1 in his breast and the other in his side, from which he shortly died. KING gave himself up and upon examination was acquitted.
