The only other item is a letter written in Dec. 2004 from a Kathleen (no last name given) who lives (at time of letter) in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. Apparently she is a cousin of our mother's, on our mother's (Donegan) side. She mentions the old family home ( we think it's where our grandmother Bridget/Bridgid Donegan was born & grew up) in Rathlena, and makes reference to old family graves in [sic]Granlahan which I think would be Garranlahan.

I hope this is helpful.

I found Bridget Donegan arriving in the US on November 2, 1912 on the ship Celtic to visit/stay with her Aunt, Mrs. Kate Donegan Fielding in Brooklyn. Kate is the daughter of Dominick and Hanoria. Mary arrives on April 27, 1913 on the ship Celtic and she is visiting/staying with her sister Bridget. So YES, there is a family connection. Kate Donegan Fielding is sister to James Donegan who married Winifred Raftery. Can you provide more information on your family line… This is awesome!!!!

Here are what we know, from the letter written by our grandmother's sister Helen Donegan Fairbrother:

My grandmother Bridgid Donegan's grandfather (Dominick) and James Donegan were brothers. James was given a piece of land in Ireland, after the Battle of Waterloo, and gave half of this piece of land to his brother Dominick. The letter indicates that James was given the land for saving the life of a British General Arthur Wellesley*, the Duke of Wellington, at the battle, but Aunt Helen's letter doesn't say where in Ireland this land was located. The letter we have from our Aunt Helen was written in 1987 (pre-Internet) and she was in her seventies or eighties when she wrote it.

James Donegan had a son, Patrick, that went to live in Newburgh, New York. Patrick had a son, Pat, that became a policeman and a daughter that became a nun.

Our Grandmother (Bridgid Donegan), and her sister Mae Donegan came to New York in 1912, six months apart.

While Mae (one of our grandmother's sisters) was in nursing school at Columbus Hospital she met a nun who had been teaching Spanish in Spain. The nun was Sister Madelin Donegan. The two talked and realized they were cousins. The nun was an elderly woman by then and Mae soon married a doctor (we don't now the doctor's name). They lost touch with each other.

My mother often spoke of an Aunt Hanora, most likely one of our grandmother (Brigid Donegan)'s sisters. I remember my mother talking her Aunt Hanora, when I was a young girl, but none of my sisters remembers that (I'm the oldest).

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you think there is a connection.

* I found Arthur Wellesley by Googling -->
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Wellesley,_1st_Duke_of_W...
so that part must be accurate.

Hello Patricia,
I have all of these details about John, his wife and his children but only recently found a direct link to Robert Donegan with John Donegan after many years of research. With my cousin's help and family memories we have pieced together an extensive family tree. My cousin remembers your Grandfather being referred to as Jock Letham - this was told to her by her mother - Eileen ( nee Murray) Dashwood. My Aunty Eileen is in her 80's now but still has a good memory for the past. She often speaks of "The Lethams" who she says were her mother's cousins. Aunty Eileen and my father Robert were brother and sister - their mother (my Grandmother) was Nellie (Ellen Caroline nee Donegan) Murray - her father was William Valentine Donegan and his sister was Margaret Ellen Donegan - your Grandmother. My Grandmother Nellie married Dennis Murray. I am sending you an invite to see our family tree. If you have anymore information about the Donegans it would be great to share it and also any photos.

Thanks
Andy

I have details of a John Donegan born in Charleville Cork

He may be a relative of mine - he signed up to join the British Army on 27 April 1827 and sailed from Limerick to Chatham in Kent. The ship he sailed in was named Thomas Grenville and he embarked on the 13th June 1827 for Bengal. Landed in Bengal on 7 November 1827. I need to know his parents, his wife and children if any so that I can either claim him as my ancestor or rule him out altogether. Thanks.

He lived with his wife (Hazel?) on Ann Street near Frankford Avenue.

I do have the 1920 and 1900 US census. I will be receiving the internment records from Holy Cross soon.

I am seeking any further family information or history.

Hi, Shelby -

I did receive the documents, but they weren't very helpful - didn't give much more info than what I already had. I think my next step will be to look at parish records. I have perused the newspaper articles available on Ancestry.com. Trouble is, it seems every branch of the Donegan tree had a Morris, a Nicholas, an Edward - so it's hard to figure out which Morris Donegan the article is talking about . Also, my visit to Syracuse at Christmas was shorter than expected, so I didn't get a chance to go over the photos with my aunts. Anyway, I'm anxious to get back into it, but we're moving on Thursday and everything is packed up. Once we get settled and I have time to pursue the next step, I hope to have more to report.

- Colleen

Gerald,

Thank you for the info. For a long time, I thought that these Donegan's in Paterson were mine (all I had at the time was my grandfather James' approx birth date) but, when I went to NJ to do some research, found that they were not. Mine lived in Belleville and Newark.

My James was born in Belleville in 1884. His parents were John (b England abt 1852) and Catherine Sullivan (b England in 1854). According to their marriage cert John's father was Richard (b Ireland abt 1813). It's possible that Richard and Jeremiah's father, James, were related, maybe even brothers but, until I can find a way to trace Richard in Ireland, it's unlikely we'll ever know.

Mary

Researching this family - Lawrence and James are children on Stephen Donegan and Mary Nolan. Lawrence married Margaret Breen, daughter of Daniel Breen and Catherine Clohessy both from Ireland around 1892. Lawrence born around 1871, James around 1861. James m. Hannah Ambrose in 1903. Lawrence & Margaret had 9 children, 4 of which who lived:
Lawrence Peter 1895-1958
Mary Catherine 1900-1985
Joseph 1903 - ?
Stephen 1908-1950
Don't know if James and Hannah had children. Looking for descendants of Peter & Elizabeth Donegan (Boston), specifically Paul born about 1925, any children of Mary and John McVeigh, married in 1925, or the whereabouts of Joseph. Thank you
I certainly will! And I'd love to see the pictures. I'm trying to gather what information I can from aunts and uncles, but unfortunately none of them are into genealogy and don't really understand why I'm interested in specific dates and places. So far I have a handful of pictures that aren't well labeled, which I plan to bring to Syracuse when I visit for Christmas in hopes I can get some more details - I think a few of them may be of Edward Michael Donegan. Once I sort that out, I'll scan them for you if you'd like. My e-mail is cdonegan@together.net.

This is exciting - as if 36 cousins weren't enough!

Just getting back into genealogy after a hiatus, and now starting on my paternal line. I hope you're both still able to get these threads. Patrick DONEGAN was my gg-grandfather, I am descended from his son Edward Michael DONEGAN (b. 26 APR1888, m. Rosalia Hyacinth BURNELL/BERNELL 17NOV~1910, d. 25NOV1960). The info I have so far is no more than what you both have, mostly gleaned from census reports, even the same discrepancies (from Co. Clare or Cork? Born 1851 or 1853?) I have ordered Patrick's death certificate, as well as his wife Ellen's, still waiting for both to arrive. My grandfather's name was Edward Maurice, and Patrick's eldest son was named Morris Edward, so perhaps the name Morris does indeed come from Patrick's father. I'm happy to share whatever info I come up with.

Hello,

I have no way of matching the two families as I am so short on family info about my Brooklyn side of the Donegans. But!!! Here is something for you to consider:

Mary Donegan Campbell
Birth: 01 SEP 1915
Brooklyn, Kings, NY
Death: Dec 1978
Rochester, Monroe, NY

Lillian Donegan Haugh
Birth: 5 Apr 1919
Brooklyn, New York
Death: 1 Jan 2006
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Anna (Nancy) Donegan Hume
Birth: 1910
Manchester, Lancashire, England
Death:
Rochester, Monroe, New York

Our family does have ties to Lancashire. Anna and two of her children were left there when Dominick came to the U.S.. And three of Dominick's daughters did end up in Rochester. Mary moved there upon her husbands death to be with her sisters Lillian and Nancy. Nancy move there upon the retirement of her husband from an oil company. She also wanted to be with her sister Lillian. Lillian lived there with her husband and family. But I do not know of a family tie to her and your family. But... that sure is close... I am sorry for the lack of info. I will keep your line in mind in my search. Good luck...

They stopped off to stay with (I believe, Donegan) family in Brooklyn before moving on to Rochester.
I am sorry, I do not know where in Ireland our Donegans came from. I know that they resided in Manchester, Lancashire, England prior to traveling to the US. The had to live there prior to 1904 and left after 1910.

The family stayed in Brooklyn with the exception of Stephen who moved to NJ. Where he died. The girls all married in Brooklyn and moved to Rochester.

We are only talking one generation here. Dominick and Ann are my Grandparents.

Thank you for your reply.

Steve Campbell

What part of Ireland were your Donegans from? Mine were from County Kerry, and settled first in Washington, DC, circa 1850. My own line came West to California in 1860, while others remained in DC--their descendents are still in the DC Metro area.

I think we have already been in contact...I'm from the Ottawa branch. I'm still trying to get to the Archives, a winter project, I think! I'm also trying to find out something about the group that's on the Quebec side close to Ottawa. I will keep in touch!

I am a descendant of Charles and Bridget Donegan that you posted. Lineage is
Charles, John, Henry, Harry, and James. All from Mineral Ridge, Ohio.
Charles came from Ireland - maybe Cork? - settled in Rigaud Quebec, parooisse De Ste. Madeleine, Diocese Cte. Vaudreuil. They had 10 children.
You have more info on Charles and Bridget than I do. Thanks for the dates.
We have never been able to cross over to Ireland, so we are interested in Irish roots same as you. Keep us posted.
Have some info on son Charles who settled in Ottowa with 9 children.
