Hi there. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on this particular branch of my tree but I’ve hammered out quite a few details since the last time I’ve spoken, including that your Michael Woodard and my John Hayden Donnelson are half brothers and are both traceable through their father William Henry Donnelson to the Donelsons of Caswell Co, North Carolina. Also, I’ve found evidence that I believe points to Nancy Jane As(h)by’s family from Kentucky and the fact that she and William Henry Donnelson’s second wife Elizabeth Asby (the one I’m a descendant of) were perhaps sisters.

I believe their parents were Thomas Ashby (spelled both with and without the “h”) and Susannah Brundage (also spelled various ways) of Clark Co, Kentucky. Susannah died about 1831 and Thomas remarried in Sangamon Co, Illinois to a second wife in 1832. This is the same place where Michael Woodard Donnelson and Nancy Jane Asby marry in the 1830s as well. Oddly enough, this Thomas As(h)by and his new wife Mary moved on to Appanoose, Iowa, from Sangamon Co, Illinois - or perhaps not "oddly" at all. I think it is another bit of evidence in favor of the idea that he could be Nancy's father.

So, tentatively, it looks like we’re related twice! Once through the Donnelsons and once through the Asbys. I would love to get in contact and swap more information and specific records if you’d be interested. I’ve traced a fair amount of information about our Donnelsons and have been talking with a woman lately who is also a descendant of Michael Woodard Donnelson’s and have been working on going still further back. If you’d like, feel free to e-mail me at JDJames89@aol.com and I could fill you in on other names and dates I have so far.
I'm a ROORK descendent. Given the prejudice against the Irish in the 19th century it isn't surprising to see your ancestor being shown as German. Many within the Roork line claimed they were Dutch.

I've had contact from descendents of Henry and Harriet. I've forwarded them your request but since it's been awhile since I've corresponded with them am not certain the email addresses are valid.

Hi- I am looking for more information on my Donelson family. They are of Irish descent.

My gr gr gr grandfather was John Donelson, born abt. 1813- his death cert. says he was born in Germany- but the surname is Irish. John married an Anna or Rosanna unknown, and they had my gr gr grandfather- Henry Donelson, born 1837 in Pennsylvania, USA. He maried Harriet Roork and they had my gr. grandfather, Linwood Donelson, born Sept 1875 in New Jersey, USA. Linwood married (for the second time) my gr. grandmother, Jennie K. Schrier, and ther had my grandfather-Henry Thomas Donelson b. 1912 d. 1985.

I would like more information on John and Anna/Rosanna Donelson and descendants. I can find John in the census images up until 1860, then he disappears. I can not find where he is buried. I have looked in several cemeteries in the area he lived in.
My cousin has done a lot of research and he cant find anything either. One theory is that John was related to another Henry Donelson that lived in the same area as he did, and was about a year older. This Henry moved to Illinois or Iowa and John may have moved with him.

Any info is helpful.
I just came across your query and this is definitely my family. Thurber Buzzell was a father to Willa. (Floyd Donelson was Willa's husband). Thurber's father was John Buzzell, who was a brother to my 3rd Great Grandfather, Isaac Buzzell.

I would love to know what the letters say, and if you still have copies, would it be to much to ask for you to scan the letters for me. I am curious as to where you found these letters? Are you related?

Please contact me. I'm actually not certain where she was between emancipation and 1900, when she shows up as Matilda Donelson (misspelled Donaldson) on a Tenn. census with her 4 sons.

Anyhow, you should feel free to e-mail me.
Thank you, I checked The Hermitage website. Unfortunately the slave list is not very complete. I think My ggg grandmother was at the Hermitage between the 1830-1850. Her name was Besty Donelson. Is your relative the Matilda listed on the Hermitage site as a descendant of George? Do you know if your family stayed in Tenn. or moved to another state?

There is a list. I do have it. It is also available on the web if you type in something like "Hermitage slaves." It was on USGenWeb if I recall. The list from the Hermitage might be more complete, but I think the lists are from the same source.

We should communicate further; there could be a link between our families. We were also Jackson slaves; my gggggrandmother, Matilda Jackson, married a Donelson, but I do not have much reliable information about him.

Jennifer

I've done a bit of research on my family story. I think my great-great-great grandmother was a slave at the Jackson Plantation- The Hermitage in Tennesse. Her name was Besty Donelson and the family was moved to a Andrew Jackson Donelson's Plantation in Holmes County Mississippi before the Civil War. The census record in Miss. listed a lot of black Donelson after the war. In later census records there seem to be fewer Donelson, so I'm guessing many move to other places. Also, the story was that my great-great grandfather was the son of an Andrew Jackson relative.
Do you have any names of your family members from this time period?

My family was also on Andrew Jackson's plantation and were moved from Tennessee to Mississppi to Andrew Jackson Donelson's plantation in Holmes County Mississippi. The census record in Mississippi list my family (Donelsons) after the civil war. Our family story is that my great-great grandfather was the son of someone is the Jackson-Donelson household. Is there a list at the Hermitage of the slaves. I was told I could write for information. I haven't yet. Has anyone done this?

I don't have any Woodards or Haydens in my tree. The Donelsons I'm related to were Ebenezer DOB 1/4/1784 who married Barbra Schaffer DOB 1/22/1794 in Ohio, then moved to Mercer county Missouri where the bulk of my family stems from until my own grandfather Chester Glen Donelson 4/18/1917-6/19/1994 moved to Iowa. Unless you're seeing a different branch. My tree only goes back to Ebenezer. We know that his father came over from either Scotland or Irland, most likely Irland given the history of the "scotch Irish", which we are. So I'm not seeing how we are connected. Please enlighten me...
Rhonda

This does indeed appear to be related, I think your Michael Woodard and my John Hayden are half brothers. There's a wonderful tree on rootsweb.com - http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op... - which I think might be where some of your information came from. If not, you chould check it out, becuase there are names further back to look into. I've postively connected myself back to John Hayden and then to his mother Elizabeth. It seems that Elizabeth was William's second and considerably younger wife, explaining why he seems to disappear relatively early on in my research. I couldn't find him - but this looks good. Also, it is comforting to see his first wife and set of children are also in Kentucky. It's really not that far from NC, but I just like analyzing things carefully before saying yes or no. Especially with al of these Donnelsons, because there are a couple of distinctly different branches.

Also, I should note that the census records for Michael Woodard really sound familiar. I believe John Hayden lived in some of these places and traveled in a similar pattern, although I have to look back on records to be sure. It just rings a bell.

Anyhow, thanks for the confidence and information. I'm going to keep looking and see if I can't trudge onward. let me know if anything new comes up and I'll be sure to do the same for you.

Thanks again.

I am researching this man from Nicholas County, West Virginia. His parents were John W. Donelson and Louise Johnson. I am working on trying to locate anyone who might have a picture of these people. This is my brother in law's grandfather and great grandparents. He grew up not knowing anything about his father's family and I am working on getting something together for him for Christmas. I know that John died in 1917 in Nicholas County, West Virginia. I do not know where or when his wife passed away. George Crook Donelson passed away in 1951 in Nicholas County, West Virginia and is buried in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Nicholas County, West Virginia. Would love to have any info that anyone can supply to help me with this family.

Executors: Margaret Donelson, Sam Motheral and Robert Donelson. Codicil; I bought 110 acres of Andrew Donelson, dec. who bought it of Joseph Motheral the deed of which I have never received. (Pp 170-171)

Marriages of Wilson Co TN, 1802-1850, by Edythe Whitley show :
John Pugh married Polly Donelson Sept 30, 1813. Levin MacKey Bondsman.
Other notes I have show that Jenny Donelson married William Pugh. I had earlier thought Jenny Donelson to be a daughter of William Donelson and Margaret Motheral Donelson but his will does not mention her so the kinship of Jenny Donelson who married Pugh is not known at this time. <veh> sept 2003

Polly Pugh widow of John Pugh may? be the same Polly Pugh who married to William W. Brown
Brown William W. Polly Pugh 12/20/1823
Surety: Samuel Watkins . 277

I would appreciate any help you can give me on this as there is much I do not know. Thank you so much for your response. vhull@aol.com

Hello,

I am also looking for a John PUGH who moved to Indiana and later to Arkansas. From what I have found there were two PUGH brothers John and William who married two DONELSON sisters Polly and Janet in Tennessee and then moved to Indiana. Could the John PUGH that died in 1816 have been the father of the John PUGH that married Polly instead of her husband?

MacDonald

If your family was part of the MacDonald clan of Scotland, you might want to look at Electronic Scotland site. It will give you some information on the clan. The MacDonald clan is one of the largest of the Scottish clans. The Scots were sent to America (exiled) because of religion -not because of crimes. My family is a sept of the MacDonald clan. One of my ancestors was removed from his church and served five years confinment for preaching something other than the "Church" doctrine. Then he was put on a ship bound for America but escaped and returned to Scotland where he was hunted for twenty years by the british army. Many of the Scots who were exiled to America in the 1700's were exiled for religious reasons.

I, too, am a descendant of John Hayden Donaldon, DOB 17 Apr 1852, Iowa. His son, Ralph Earl Donaldson, 11 Dec 1882, is the father of my grandmother, Jessie Priscilla Donaldson, 08 Jun 1908. Marriage information is listed for John Hayden Donaldson at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ne/merrick/marriage/boo... and shows William Donaldson and Elizabeth Asby as his parents. He married Priscilla Beery, although the record spells her first name as Pricilla. I have a photo of her, Priscilla and John's son Frank Hayden Donaldson, his son, Francis M. Donaldson, and Francis's daughter Beth.

A family bible of Ralph Donaldson shows John Hayden Donaldson to be the son of William H. Donaldson and Elizabeth Asby Donaldson and that John was born at Libertyville, Iowa 17 Apr 1852. The 1850 Iowa Census for liberty Township, Jefferson Co, Iowa lists Wm Donaldson as 59 yrs, a farmer, with a POB of KY and a wife, Elizabeth and son, Wm.

You might also want to check out the Paige/Page Family Ancestry in RootsWeb.com. It lists info regarding William Henry Donnelson with the same DOB and death information.

Let me know if you are interested in comparing info on the Donaldson's. It certainly appears that we are part of the same family.

Robert was my great-great grandfather, and Michael & Nancy were my 3Xgreat grandparents, and any information about their parents, I've not been able to document.

Michael and Nancy were both born in Kentucky. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Illinois where James was born in 1841. By 1844 they had relocated to Missouri where Sarah was born in 1844. When William was born in 1848 the family had made their way to Iowa.
-
1850 Census:
Liberty, Jefferson Co., Iowa (page 80)
Woodward Donnelson, 33, Male, Farmer, b.
William Donelson/Donladson, his wife Elizabeth, and their son John Hayden Donaldson

Hello everyone! I’m looking for information on a William Donelson/Donaldson from Tennessee. William was married to and Elizabeth and had a son named John Hayden Donaldson, my great great great grandfather and I would really like to know more about his family lines. As I understand it, William’s last name was Donelson until a typo on a land claim forced him to change the name to Donaldson. There is a rather large family of Donelsons with quite a history in Tennesse, where William was born, but I can't figure out where he would fit in to the tree.

Here is the information I have:

John Hayden Donaldson
born: about 1852 in Iowa, USA
died: 9/5/1924 in Ravalli, Montana, USA
married: Priscilla Beery (b. 1/15/1857 in Missouri, USA- d. 9/22/1936 in Deer Lodge, Montana, USA)

John Hayden's parents are:

William (Donelson) Donaldson
born: 3/14/1792 in Tennessee, USA
died: 11/20/1859 in Iowa, USA
married: Elizabeth UNKNOWN (b. 12/7/1811 in Chapman Merrick, Kentucky, USA - d. 12/27/1894 in Arkansas, USA)

I would really appreciate any information on these or any other Donaldson/Donelson relatives, thanks.
Hello there! I'm so glad that you responded to this post, as it was a very old post of yours I came across that matched information I had on John Hayden Donaldson. I would like very much to compare notes (although it seems that we have some of the same records, like the Iowa censuses) and I am EXTREMELY interested in the photo you have of Pricilla Beery. I descend from John and Priscilla's son Jay Claud Donaldson (b. 23 OCt 1889 - d. 23 Aug 1957)- who would be brother to your Ralph Earl Donaldson - and his wife Maude E (Unknown) Donaldson. You wouldn't happen to know anything about Maude (particularly her maiden name) would you? Either way, please drop me an e-mail at JDJames89@aol.com and we can discuss this further. Thanks.

Donelson/Donnelson Family in Kentucky Connected to the Tennesee Family?

Do you happen to know any more about the "ANDREW DONELSON married MARY MOTHERAL, July 18, 1791, with JAMES RICHMOND,
bondsman"? I am trying to link them with a William Henry Donnelson/Donelson who had to change his name to "Donaldson" after a botched up land contract. I am hoping to come in contact with someone who knows their childrens' names and information. I've found a lead heading back from myself to a William Henry Don(n)elson who was born about 1792 in Kentucky. One researcher on my end of this branch (working backwards) suggests that he might have had a brother named John Don(n)elson born between 1800 and 1810, and both were the children of Andrew Donnelson and Mary "Motherwell." I believe this is Mary Motheral and would love any proof that Andrew Donnelson moved to Kentucky or had a child named William Henry Donnelson.

My William was born, like I said, about 1792 in Kentucky and married an Elizabeth Asby/Asbury. He ended up dieing in Iowa, 29 NOV 1859. If anyone recognizes these guys, PLEASE let me know. I am having a hard time following this name securely from Donaldson to Donelson.

Also, since I am hoping this is my branch, has anyone made any further discoveries of the parents Humphrey and Mary Donelson's parents?

And, if all of this turns out to be a false lead (which it might be) does anyone know of any other Donelson/Donnelson/Donaldson families of Kentucky? That's where I've managed to get back to. I'm sure they're related somehow...

Thanks.
