Re: John DONNELL

Shelley, I do not have the maiden name which you want, that of the Mary who married Robert Donnell b 1728. I have very few records on the Pennsylvania Donnells other than my Thomas (born 1710-1715) who married Jane Latham.

Let me point out that according to Rankin's "History of Buffalo Church and Her People", the Robert Donnell who was born in 1728, Rankin referred to as "Robert Donnell 2d". Rankin referred to the Robert who was a brother to Thomas (1710-1715) as Robert Donnell Sr. (whose wife, by the way, was also named Mary).

The children of Robert 2d were William, Elizabeth, Daniel, George, Robert (whom he referred to as Major Robert), Margaret, and Samuel (who he referred to as Rev. Samuel)

The children of Robert Donnell Sr were Robert, John, Mary, Margaret, William, and Thomas (whom he refrred to as Rev. Thomas).

Rankin wrote that "the four Donnell families that located here must have been closely related. Thomas, Sr., and Robert Sr., who came in 1753, were brothers; James, Sr., who came in 2760, and Robert, the second, who came in 1771, may hae been nephews of Thomas and Robert Sr.

I have been trying for years to find some record on Thomas (1710-1715) before he got to NC in 1751. We know that his son John---known as Major John in the Rev. War---according to his Rev War pension, was born in 1748 in PA. One of Thomas' grandchildren wrote that Thomas came from Ireland to PA (no date) where five or six of his children were born.

I have the record of a 1751 survey for Thomas in Anson Co NC. This was in an area which later became Guilford County.

I would be glad to know more about your descent from Robert 2d.

My line from Thomas (1710-1715) is through his son George (1759-1839) and George's second wife Amelia (Williams) Shanks (1773-1852.

Sorry I can't help you with your Mary's surname.

Dorothy Donnell Steers
dds25@bellsouth.net

Hi Dorothy,
I am wondering if you have more info on Robert Donnell, b. 1728, brother of Thomas m. Jane Latham?
I am trying to figure out who "mary" is, his wife. Some say her last name is unknown, some say it is Jackson, some say Irwin. Can you help me? Do you think he was married to more than one Mary? It seems the Donnell men liked to marry women named Mary......makes it even more confusing!
Thanks for your help.
Shelley G.
Major Update for Clan DONALD DNA Project Web Site

The website for the DNA project for Donnell, McDonnell, McDaniel, McDonald, MacDonald, Donald, Donaldson, McConnell, Connell, and other men whose male lines may be associated with the MacDonald Clan was updated during the holiday weekend. Many of the members of the project who were previously members of large “unclassified” groups within the project are now placed in smaller “classified” groups with men who are related to them. There are 3 new subgroups, an R1a Green group, an R1b Yellow Green group, and an R1b Maroon group, and other classified groups have expanded. The R1b Magenta group has grown to more than double its size in early November.

You can see the tables here:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/tables.htm

Immediately above some of the tables, there are new or revised notes on the groups in those tables. Some of these notes tell how the men were classified as members of particular groups. For some of the men added to the Magenta group, results for one of the markers in the 38-67 marker panels at FTDNA were critical in the decision-making process.

The note for the new R1b Yellow Green group states that the 464X test (a special test for the DYS464 markers) gives a distinctive results for members of that group. The Yellow Green group is part of a much larger group of related men, and most of those men would also receive a similarly distinctive result on the 464X test. I am working on a DNA project for the larger group, and I believe that some of the men who remain in the R1b Yellow Group of the project could be similarly grouped using 464X test results.

If you think that your family may fit into the larger group, you may contact me for more information, and you may want to visit our project website for the DYS464xccgg project:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/DYS464x%20ccgg

I encourage all researchers with relatives in the Clan Donald DNA project to check out the revised tables AND the new network charts for the project. The network charts are a nice pictorial representation of the project data, showing a best approximation of a family tree for the men in the project. A chart including members of the R1b Magenta, Maroon, Yellow Green, and other groups may be found here:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/R1b31treewrapper.htm

and another one using data for more markers may be found here:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/R1b61treewrapper.htm

You can find links to charts for some of the other men in the project here:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAresults.htm

If no male from your family line is in the project, and you have a suitable male family member available for testing, you may want to take advantage of the holiday discounts available for orders placed through DNA projects. A suitable male would be any male whose all male line goes back to a man of the surname being researched. Usually, both the male testing and the ancestor would have the same surname, but there are exceptions when a name has changed.

For families with one member already in the project, it would make sense to encourage testing of more distant relatives and suspected relatives while these discounts are available.

If you have any questions relating to participation in the Clan Donald DNA project, I would be happy to answer them for you. Just reply to this message through the message board or e-mail me directly.

Kirsten Saxe, co-administrator for the DYS464xccgg project (and McConnell researcher)

DONNELL DNA Project and discounted testing

Donnell men are strongly encouraged to join the Clan Donald DNA Project. Most of the 637 men whose DNA test results are already posted on the results tables for the project have names that are or can be variants of the name MacDonald. McDonnell is a variant of MacDonald, and Donnell is another possible variant. Donnell men may join the project, whether they suspect that their Donnell family was originally a Donnell family or not.

This is a very good time to join the project, because competition in the DNA testing field has been very intense recently, and some promotions have featured deep discounts. Some of these deep discounts are still available, but are slated to end soon. Donnell researchers who have been considering DNA testing for their Donnell lines may find it worthwhile to arrange it before these offers expire.

Those interested in the Clan Donald DNA project will want to explore the project website at:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/

Those interested in the Clan Donald DNA project may also want to look at some of my prior posts about the project on this board, on the McConnell board, and on other boards.

When comparing the various options, make sure that you are looking at the best offers from each lab. With some labs, you will need to take advantage of project discounts to get the best pricing.

Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher

Hi... Does anyone have information on Timothy Donnell, born probably York, Maine ca. 1792. Had son, Benjamin F. Donnell, born also probably York, Maine ca. 1822. Benjamin married Sarah A. Moulton on July 16, 1850 in York.

Probable that this Timothy married a Miss Harriet Donnell on November 4, 1827. That date leads me to think that she is not the mother of Benjamin.

I'm looking for any information on Timothy, possible prior marriage, parents, death, etc.

Thank you,
Linda

Hi Dennis,

I show Mary NOWLAN to be the d/o Richard NOWLAN based in the following record:

*Source Information: Massachusetts Vital Records Vol: 101 ; Page: 37
MARRIAGE 9 April 1856 Boston MA - Andrew Donnell, of Boston, age 24, occupation - painter, born: St Johns, NB, father: Anthony, first marriage - Mary Donnell, of Boston, age 27, no occupation listed, born: St. Johns, NB, father: Richard Nowlan, second marriage By William T. Smithett of Boston

With that, and census records, I have that Mary is b. ca 1829, St. Johns NB and that's it.

But nothing is set in stone and there is always the possibility that the record is incorrect, however, that is pretty much where I left off with the NOWLANs with a thought to get back to them later.

If you find evidence contrary to the record, please post to the board. I would be interested to see where your research leads you.

Regards,
JC Henry

600 Men Now on Clan DONALD DNA Project Tables

Less than seven months after becoming the first family-based genetic genealogy project to post results for 500 participants, the Clan Donald DNA Project is now the first family-based genetic genealogy project to post results for 600 participants. This Y chromosome DNA project is open to all men with surnames suggesting Clan Donald ancestry, and Donnell is one of these surnames.

Early in the clan's history, the clan chiefs took the surname MacDonald, and many men with MacDonald variant surnames today are their descendants, but there are also many men with these surnames who are not male line descendants of that first MacDonald chief. Some are descendants of men who joined the clan upon marriage and took a MacDonald variant surname at that point. Since MacDonald means “son of Donald”, there were many men who adopted one of these variant names as the first permanent last name for their own lines. Sometimes the surname would change slightly. A MacDonald line might become a MacDonnell line, and later MacDonnell might become Donnell.

Because the Y chromosome is passed from father to son with little change from generation to generation, Y chromosome DNA testing allows us to sort out the Donnell and other MacDonald variant surname lines within the project. Right now, there are 30 separate groups of men in the project, and 29 of those groups include men with MacDonald variant surnames. These groups were created by comparing DNA test results, and any man who joins the project will be placed in a group. Generally, the men most closely related to a man will be found in the same group, and there is a way to compare test results using the project tables that makes it easy to find the men most likely to be related to a given project member.

Some men find that they are members of relatively large groups of men that are rather closely related. Generally, these groups descend from kings and clan chiefs whose families have had great reproductive success. Other men find that they are members of smaller groups which may be very closely related. Still others find that their results make it difficult to classify them, and are placed in a catchall group of potential cousins which may be large or small. Some may be placed in a catchall group because they don't have close matches within the project. Others may have results that are ambiguous. For many of those, further testing would make it possible to classify them into smaller groups. Many men in these catchall groups do have matches, and from time to time, it will be possible to form new groups for these men and their matches.

At the moment, a search for the name Donnell turns up 2 listings on the project results tables, but there are at least 3 men on the tables who trace their line to an earliest known ancestor named Donnel or Donnell. One of those men does not have matches within the project at this time, but a Donnell in the R1b Yellow subgroup of the project does have DNA matches with 5 other men already in the project. One of those matches is a perfect 25 marker match with a man listed as a Carey, but if you click on the link in the second column of the table for this man, you will see that his earliest known male line ancestor is a Donnell. In fact, if you also click on the corresponding link for the Donnell, you will see that they list the same earliest known ancestor. I am not sure what the story is here, but it may be that this Carey established a Donnell connection through the use of DNA testing. These men also have 11 for 12 matches with 4 others in the project. Two of those have MacDonald variant surnames, and there is a reasonably good chance that they are closely related. The others, a Kilmer and a McQuesten, are more likely to share a most recent common ancestor who lived longer ago, prior to the adoption of surnames. If some of these 11 for 12 matches are tested on more markers, it will be possible to be more specific about the closeness of the relationship between them.

What can the new DNA research techniques do for these researchers and other genealogists in general? One thing they can do is reveal relationships with cousins when a paper trail is lacking. One on one comparisons with such cousins don't reveal precisely how two men are related, but finding these connections is very rewarding and can help genealogists focus their paper trail research on true relatives. In some cases where paper trail research is unsuccessful in establishing exactly how two matching men are related, it is possible to deduce their relationship by testing other men from the same family with paper trails and analyzing their results. As more advanced testing techniques become available, it will be possible to say more and more about a man's line based on his DNA test results alone, and combining these techniques with paper trail research will lead to even more breakthroughs.

One way that DNA testing can help researchers narrow their search is by providing clues to where their families lived years ago. If multiple DNA matches for their line lived close together, there is a good chance that their family came from the same location. Last week I was able to develop a pretty promising lead for a Whitmore researcher who had posted a query on the DNA-Newbie list at yahoogroups about the seeming lack of matches for her Whitmore cousin. Her case was a little tricky, because her line probably experienced an unusual mutation event that changed the DNA profile for their line substantially. Once I realized this, we were able to identify two men as her cousin's most promising DNA matches. Neither of them shared the Whitmore surname, but one's line traces to Langholm in the county of Dumfriesshire in Scotland, and the other's line traces to the neighboring county of Roxburghshire. The county line between the two lies about 5 miles from Langholm, so we now have reason to suspect that her Whitmore family lived near there prior to the adoption of surnames, or may have been part of a related group of people who settled there later.

Whether a family has matches for their line within the project or not, family members may want to ask known or suspected male line cousins to test. Having results for more than one known cousin can tell a family more about the markers of their most recent common ancestor. Knowing more about the most recent common ancestor's marker values can be very helpful when making comparisons with other DNA matches who don't share a known common ancestor.

You can find out more about this project by going to the welcome page of the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/.

Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher
My earliest maternal ancestor in America was Patrick Donnell. He was born in Ireland in 1749 and migrated to MD, where he married Margaret Brice in 1794. Margaret was also born in Ireland.

They subsequently migrated to Westmoreland County (Allegheny) Co., MD. where most of their 7 children were born.
They did not have a son named James but one son, William, was born in 1807.

They were long time members of Puckety Presbyterian Church in Westmoreland Co., PA. and were both burried in the Puckety Prebyterian Church cemetary.

I have no knowledge as to whether Patrick Donnell may have had relatives living in Westmoreland Co, PA when he migrated to PA.

Yes, I am aware that there are many errors in Dr. Donnell's book. I spent a few hours reading some of the papers of S.T. Donnell of Lampasas, TX in the library at Mt. Juliet, TN during Christmas break. S. T. points out several errors in Dr. Donnell's work and cites many documents and records as his sources. I also read among S. T.'s papers that Dr. Donnell was ill and perhaps bedfast the last few years of his life. The book had been completed by his family and by his secretary following his death. S. T.'s conclusion was that 'work notes' had perhaps found their way into the book. Those of you who have looked at S. T.'s papers, please correct me if the above is not as you understand his writing.

The fact that the Donnell's of Wilson County used the same names over and over makes research of family lines very difficult for me. A little booklet titled, An Historical Sketch of Wilson County, TN by James V. Drake (first published in 1879) says, referring to pioneer settlements, "The next settlement, it is thought, was made on the waters of Spring Creek, about eight miles south from the site of Lebanon, about the year 1796, by John Foster, John Doak, David McGathey, Alexander Brader, and the Donnell families. It was known as the "Donnell Settlement," they having numerical ascendency. Indeed, there was, and is yet, an extensive relationship of this name, several members bearing the same of several given or Christian names, as William, Thomas and Robert. It was sometimes doubtful as to which individual was meant, even when addressed by the full name. To avoid the confusion prenomens, or nicknames, were conferred by common consent. Thus they had Captain Billy, Poplar Billy, Cedar Billy and Sugar Billy; Long Tommy, Short Tommy, Tiptoe Tommy, Big Robin, Little Robin, and Uncle Robin, with a number of Georges, Johns, James', Samuels, Calvins, Etc., "

I came away from my day in the library feeling that I had gained little in my struggle to "connect" my James M. Donnell to any family other than to eliminate some possible ancestors. Alice

As it turns out, it was Madison Co., down around Jackson instead of Sumner Co. I am trying to find the parents of Eden Burr Donnell. He married in Jan 1824 in Wilson Co. to Eliza Garmany, and then bought land on Bradley Creek in Rutherford Co. in Nov 1827 before he died in 1828. Bradley Creek is between Lascassas and Milton in Rutherford Co., TN. It borders Wilson and Davidson, or at least it did back in the early 1800's.

Re: James M. DONNELL

You are right, Alice. Dr. Donnell's book had not been completed at the time of his death, and I have heard that it was completed and published by his family. To make matters worse, on the way to the printer, the west Texas wind flared up and papers went flying - some were not recovered, which explains why my grandfather's descendants were not included in the book. I did not intend to criticize Dr. Donnell's work (which may not have been entirely his conclusions), but I have run into so many people who won't have what they read any other way. Some of his errors have been incorporated with other researchers' work and made into CD's that Broderbund sells - it's such a mess, and it makes me so ill. I just wish S. T. had written a book back then straightening out everything.

I printed your email to keep, as I have never seen or heard of the little booklet you referred to. I do believe there may be a portion of it quoted in Goodspeed's account of Wilson Co., Tennessee. I know I have seen that first sentence quoted somewhere. I also think this passage includes my Donnells, because my fourth great grandfather, James Donnell, Sr. (I can share your misery in sorting the James Donnells) had a son-in-law named David McGahey.

What I wouldn't give to look back for a day in the year 1796 to see who was there. I'll bet even they (Donnells) were confused about who they were related to and how.

The Orner/Arner Family Association seeks descendants of:

JULIA DONNELL, William Henry Ahner, 1870-1952, Brady’s Bend, Armstrong; New Kensington, Westmoreland; Tarentum, Allegheny, PA; Washington, OH; Weston, Lewis, WV.

You are almost certainly descendants of Hans Ulrich Arner and Verena Eberhard, 1735 immigrants from Switzerland to Philadelphia. Join us for an August 24-25, 2002 gathering in beautiful Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (1 hour north of Philadelphia). For “reunion” information or to see where you fit into the *rner family, visit Joe Erner’s website at www.geocities.com/~erner/gen/arner which documents the Arner/Aner family to the 1500s, or contact us through the Arner Listserv at ARNER-L@rootsweb.com. We’re planning two fun-filled days including a catered Pennsylvania Dutch luncheon and the dedication of a memorial stone in the Heidelberg Union Church cemetery to honor the immigrants. Help us widen our circle of cyber-cousins and plan to attend. We welcome you.

DONNELLs of Sumner Co., TN

I am at a loss to the parents of Eden Burr Donnell, born abt 1800. Not known if he was born in Sumner Co., but is believed to have lived there, either as a child with his parents or as an adult. He married in 1824 in Wilson Co. to Eliza Garmony, and died four yrs later in 1828 in Rutherford Co. All I know is that his mothers name was Jane. ANY help would be appreciated. He had 3 children, William Carroll Donnell, Isabella C Donnell, and DeWitt C Donnell. "Carroll" married twice to Lansden cousins, Isabella married James M Huddleston and DeWitt was found at age 21 in the household of his aunt and uncle, sister of his mother in Wilson Co. TN.
