Irish Research

I'm in need of some advice, myself and my great uncle have been researching our family tree and have came to a little bit of a standstill. I'm trying to trace where my gggggrandfather came from but I'm struggling to say the least as I don't know which religion etc he was and unless you know this it's hard to identify them in Irish records. The only information I have is that he left Ireland to move to Barrhead in Scotland and worked in the Mills as a Flesher, his wife was Helen Kerr although she does not show up on any scottish census records so I'm not to sure if something happened to her before he came to scotland.

From his death certificate I've been able to identify is parents and his year of birth give or take:

Father: Thomas Donnelly
Mother: Catherine Conway
DOB: 1812

Can anyone help?

Thanks David for answering my post. Thats quite a story. I am from New Orleans originally, but moved from there to FL in 1981. Glad I missed Katrina, but I was there for Betsy in '65 and Camille in '69, Andrew in FL in 92, and the 2004 season when 4 storms crossed the state in almost exactly the same spot. Thats enough for me!

Good luck with your genealogy.

Judy

Re: THOMAS NOEL DONNELLY

Hey Judy, Dear Girl I am so sorry . I just wrote a huge letter to you as a reply and was wrapping up when my thumb hit this, pad and bam my whole story was gone. I must say it was coming along quite well. Anyway , let me into myself I am David Donnelly the son of many John Joseph Donnelly's Sr., Jr.'s and thirds...lol It took me fifteen years to make the connection to James Donnelly and his Dad James O'Donnelrom Ontario, Canada. I'm not too fond of that part because of the Black Donnelly story, which brings tears to my eyes. I would like to one day go on up there and do my own dog on investigation and see what happen to our family.I was telling you in the previous thread about Moses....now I don't think it was his name be he was blessed with a Biblical name. He left a journal of what he remembered. His Father Thomas Donnelly was one of if not the first Donnelly upon Theterritory. He had four sons. There was a Thomas of course and a James, John And I'm just goiung to say Moses. Now two boys when they had got their witts decided to head to Tennessee and off they went not long after that John was killed by Indians. It was some kind of tough back in those days....but anyway Ole Moses was dying and he knew it ....and so he wrote what he could remember about his Dad, Thomas and his brothers, Mom and so forth. What Impressed me was how he went on about the Donnelly Name. He said we were different, we felt things of a spiritual nature that most folks don't and we have much love in our hearts for the Lord and the lords family and those who were not.As I read his character analysis it hit home. Yep I'm just like that ole Moses you loelvely old fellar and I know my Dad, brother and Grandfather whom we called Pa-Pa were very much the same way.I miss ole pa pa he died back in86 but was a Donnelly to the core. Love ya Pa-Pa....andway Judy I know I didn't help you with your quest but I just wanted you to know that there were many Donnelly's down here in New Orleans La. And hey that ole storm Katrina killed some of us off. That was the worst I have seen in my days. God Do Please Bless Them All, I keep making mistakes on tis computer of my son.Either my fingers are getting wider or his keypad is the slim model....lol...any way nice talkin to ya...your free to visit my site and do feel free to ask any questions because when I made my list public things started taking off....and I have gotten much info. something to think about nitey night Judy.
God Bless
David Donnelly

James McDermott (1848-1895), Foremass (son of Michael McDermott & Brigid Mellon) m.1883 Jane McCann - Jane was my great-great-grandaunt, daughter of Terence McCann & Jane Kelly

Ellen McDermott, Dunmoyle (possibly a daughter of Francis McDermott, unknown mother) m.1873 Owen McCann - several of their great-grandchildren married into my McCann family connections; Hugh McDermott, Dunmoyle (possible son of Francis McDermott, unknown mother) m.1874 Catherine McGarvey (possibly daughter of Terence McGarvey) - their son John McDermott (1875-1939) married Cassie Grimes (my fourth cousin once-removed) who was a daughter of Mick Grimes & Maggie Mullan. If there is anyone doing research on the McDermotts, would they know if this Ellen McDermott who married Owen McCann the sister of Hugh McDermott who married Catherine McGarvey since I suspect both their fathers may have been called Francis and just curious to know who their mothers were, and were the McDermotts of Dunmoyle the same family as the "Mellon" McDermotts of Foremass?

thanks

Tomwestwardstudio

I'm interested in your Donnelly name and the townland Ballydonnelly, Ireland. I am trying to find anything out about my great, great grandmother who I believe may be a Donnelly. For sure, she lived in Ballydonnelly, which is a small farming community in Antrim County. Her name was either Nancy or Anna, and she married Charles Rea.

Do you have any records of a Anna or Nancy Donnelly or MacDonnelly?

Ken Ray

Hi, I'm Margaret Ann Donnelly. My great-grandfather, William (middle name possibly Luke) Donnelly was born in Co. Tyrone about 1860 and came to the US between 1872 and 1880, settling in Harrison, New Jersey. My grandfather, father and brother are all also William Donnelly.

I have no information about siblings and parents for my great-grandfather and would love to find someone who does. I do not know if my great-grandfather came to the US alone or with family.

Hope someone may be able to assist.

Thanks.

Rose Donnelly connection

I have seen the name Rose Donnelly on message boards before and did not know if she was related to my line as I don't yet have a lot of information. Several of my Donnellys settled in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, USA. I came across a Rose Donnelly in Beaver Falls born in Ireland about 1849. She is a widow living with her daughter and son-in-law Harry and Mary Brandon. She immigrated in 1867. My Donnellys (and the next gereration down) did not arrive until around 1905. Does anyone know if she is related to my Donnellys?

My grandfather is Terence Donnelly.

Terence Donnelly b. 13 Dec 1891 in Cambuslang, Scotland
Parents: John Donnelly b. about 1851 in Ireland
Louisa Smith b. about 1860 in England
Married 22 November 1878 Kinning Park Lanarkshire
Other children of Terence and Louisa: Patrick (Pete), James, George, Charles, Louisa, David. Several moved to the United States to Beaver Falls. Terence moved to Canada.

John Donnelly's parents on his marriage certificate:
Terrence Donnelly + Martha Madden (born about 1825+or-)
I presume they were born in Ireland like John but maybe not.
I have found no further information as yet.

Louisa Smith's parents were:
Sergeant William Smith + Maria Eastwood
Maria also married a Courtney after William's death.
Maria was born in Ireland.
I have no further info here either.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi! I did send you a message yesterday but i am not sure it got sent. Looking at your posting again the names in your family are so familiar but the dates don't seem to tally to mine. The Martin in my family had a father Hugh and mother Sarah Ann. Hugh died in 1917 leaving her with Mary b 1900, Sarah b 1904, Rose Ann b 1906, James b 1909 and Martin b 1910.Their mother could also not manage and i think the children were brought up by someone else. She might of had a further child, after her husband died, called Hugh, she definately had one in 1920 called Thomas. If this is at all familiar to your family please email.
regards Catherine

Donnelly Family

You know when you start this huge undertaking, your own family name seems to be the most interesting. I was born and raised in New Orleans La. and I'm 54. My only brother was a John Joseph Donnelly 111, my Dad. John Joseph Donnelly Jr. and my grandfather, John Joseph Donnelly Sr.Well that was all easy to find documents etc.and Pa-Pa (John Donnelly Sr.)remembered his mom and Dad, John Donnelly and Mary Alice Truard, but that is where it stopped for twenty years until I broke some info and found another John Donnelly ,born in 1846 and his father was James Donnelly and his father was James O'Donnell from Ontario born in Tipperary Ireland. Man I gave myself high fives on this one. I was stuck and going nowhere fast until I broke the news. I have so many questions now, like why did James come down to New Orleans? Where they related to the Black Donnellys? That story swells me up big time . Us Donnelly's have a unique kinship and quality I read in an old journal from one of the original Donnelly's who came over with his three brothers.

Hi, My name is David Donnelly. I've been tracing Donnelly's for quite some time now. I have run through Hugh's name so many times...I don't know if this is your Hugh but I've found only one thus far. For some time I thought this was my ggrand father but disproved it. I trace the Donnelly's in New Orleans until I made the link back to Ontario and am working the Black Donnelly story. I do know my family and the Black Donnelly's are from Tipperary at the same time but did not die in 1880 during the massacre...I'm interested in the story and would like to get a non biased view of what happened. Do take good care.
God Bless You .
David Donnelly
