Gary: "originate" may not be the best term, inasmuch as we all originated in some shallow ocean somewhere a long time ago. But there were certainly a lot of O'Donovans living in County Cork a couple of hundred years ago. I suggest you google "Donovan history" sometime when you have a few hours. There's a lot out there.

my name is Gary Donovan, my father is James Edward Donovan jr his father is James Edward Donovan Sr. I have been told that our ancestors originated in County Cork Ireland and came to America and landed in New York where the family went to Chicago as well as down south. Most of my family lived in tennessee, where only my mother now lives. I would like to know if we in fact did originate in county cork ireland.

According to her 12-27-1906 death certificate Mary is the daughter of Dennis and Anna (---) Donovan- both born in Ireland.

I have no proof that Michael Donovan and Mary Donovan were married. However, they are buried in the same cemetery plot with my great grandmother (their daughter Annie), and my grandmother Rebecca Pettit, Bartholemew Donovan and others. The plot was purchased by Mary shortly after Michael's death. His burial was the first in the plot. Michael was killed in a construction accident in 1867 (The Coroner's Certificate says he was in the country 13 years before he died). So assuming they were married in the early 1860's they would not show up in any census as a couple. Nevertheless, I am convinced they were married.

I know of no relation between the two Donovan families but I wouldn't dismiss that possibility.
There were cerainly a lot of O'Donovans (Donovans) in that county at one time. My best guess is that a guy could be born, grow up, work, marry, raise a family and die and never have much of a reason to leave his own parish. So finding other folks with Cork Donovans in their past is not only pretty easy to do, but has so far not been the magic door opener I kee p looking for.
My last Irish Donovans were born in Rosscarbery in Cork, and came to America in about 1824.
A cousin and fellow Donovan researcher, Louisa Donovan from St. Louis, has personally inspected the baptismal records at St. Fachtma church in Rosscarbery. She writes:
"The baptism registry in Rosscarbery begins in 1814, so we're lucky to have ancestors born after that date. 17 May 1815 records Daniel, son of Daniel D(onova)n and Betty Hurley, sponsors Jer. Dempsey and Mary D(onova)n. The part in parentheses was not very legible, but could as easily be Donovan as Dolan, Dineen or similar. I did not have as much success with Ann Regan; the closest I could come being Hanora, daughter of ??? Regan and Mary Connelly, sponsored by Dan Mahony and Hanora O'Regan on 9 August 1816. Correspondence from J. Keohane to JT Donovan in 1923 makes reference to the notion that Ann's name may have been Hanora, as the relatives remaining in Ireland referred to her as "Norrie or Nora"."

I am very interested to hear what information you have (and where it came from) about the Hurley connection. Let's continue to correspond.

My Donovans came from this area of County Cork. Daniel Hurley Donovan was born in Rosscarbery in 1815, and came to America in 1824. We've never been quite sure whom he came with. He married Ann Regan (also born in Rosscarbery, 1819) in Philadelphia in 1835, and the two of them eventually settled in St. Louis, MO.
Daniel's parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Hurley, presumably also born and raised in County Cork.
I would very much like access to your tree to see if any of your ancestry coincides with mine.

Her father's name was Michael Casey and I understand that he may have been a solicitor. The only record I have of him is that he is described as a gentleman on Kathleen marriage cedrtificate to George Benjamin Trapps. Any info would be really appreciated.

This is interesting. My Donovans came from County Cork also. In doing some research I came across an Elizabeth Hurley. My Great, great, great grandfather is Patrick Donovan who first came to Boston with Ellen Sheehey? spelling might be off and were married in 1883. They ended up in Johnstown, PA. Patrick's parents were Michael Donovan and Margert (Daily?) There is also a last name of Cronin associated with Hurley. I don't have my list with me, but I have come across these names before.

Dear Laura,
I hope you don't mind me sending you a message, I'm not even sure if it will reach you as I am a novice at this type of thing but here goes anyway!
I noticed a message you posted way back in March 2002 when you were talking to someone about Jeremiah Donovan. What caught my eye specifically was your mention of Mount Common. I am presently trying to help my friend Kath Donovan to research her family tree as she doesn't use a computer. All went well until we set to work on the Donovans. I have to confess, I am well and truly stuck. She still has family living in Mount Common to this day but no one knows much in the way of the family's history.
Her Father, Timothy Donovan was born in 1933 and his Father's name was Michael. Michael was approx. 50 years old when Timothy was born which puts his DOB around 1883.
We think he had brothers Patrick, Cornelius, and possibly Timothy & there is definitely a Jeremiah in the mix somewhere but whether he was brother, cousin or uncle we don't know. There may well have been a sister named Julia also.
It is thought that Timothy, Julia & Cornelius all emigrated to the USA.
Michael's wife may have been Ellen Sullivan.

I would be really grateful if you could let me know if any of these names ring a bell with you!
Many thanks, Diane.

Sharon:

The William Leonard you mention was born in 1884 in Wales, was the brother of my great-grandfather, David, and eldest son of Morgan and Maria Leonard. He married Elizabeth Moss Donovan in Chicago, Ill in 1915 and they lived in Gary, Indiana. Since William lived far away from his parents and siblings, and b/c he didn't have any natural children of his own, I have very little information about him, other than a marriage certificate and census records.

ANY and ALL information (pictures, date of death, stories etc.) you may have about William Leonard, or his family in Indiana would be greatly appreciated.

While I have done very little research on the Donovan (and Moss) family, it appears from the 1910 Census that Viola, Henry, and Edwin's father was William Donovan - it took me a while to find this information.

I hope to hear from you about William Leonard and his family, or if you have any questions for me.
